Horrible experience, ruined our holidays
We booked a villa through Airbnb but the host changed us to a different one, this "Villa Marina" only one week before our stay. It was too late to find anything else being high season in Crete and the new villa seemed fine and had good reviews.
When we got there the place didn't look at all like in the photos. It was obvious the photos were old and no one had taken care of the place in a long time. The freezer was broken (mid August in Crete with a heatwave) and there were reviews complaining about this from a year before so they knew about it. The oven didn't work either, the house was really empty and in disrepair, advertised as a luxury villa (and priced as luxury too) with a well equipped kitchen but most of the items mentioned in the description were missing (freezer, toaster, food processor, juicer, vacuum cleaner, nothing there!). They advertise dishwasher and washing machine but they don't provide dishwasher tablets or washing machine soap, so we couldn't use them anyway.
They also say in the description there was a twice a week cleaning and linen and towel change, never happened. Same with the twice a week pool cleaning, no one ever came.
The photos show a nice green well-kept garden with grass, the real garden looked like Chernobyl, all dry and a pile of dirt in the middle.
There was nothing to clean, not a brush, dustpan, nothing. We broke a glass bottle and had to pick up the glass pieces with our hands.
We contacted the host as soon as we got there, they only fixed the most horrible things like a broken beam that could have fall on anyone, removed a wasp nest in the garden and changed the bedding the second night because the one they had was so small that we ended up sleeping on the bare mattress!! No acknowledge at all about all the other issues, they just said if we didn't like the house we could leave, as if we hadn't travelled all the way from the UK and had any other place to go in Crete in high season.
Oh yeah and they bought a new freezer for us that arrived the night before we were leaving.
Airbnb ended up refunding half the money but that wasn't really compensation enough, we spent the whole week dealing with them and with this horrible host and it completely ruined our holiday.

About the neighbourhood
The villa is located in the small village of ‘Pigi’, which means 'Source'. The village got its name from a source where a lot of water came out that was here centuries ago. Pigi is just above the village of Adele on the road to Arkadi monastery. It lies in a fertile area with many olive groves. The distance to the beach is about three kilometers (Pigianos Kampos). In Pigianos Kampos there are several beachfront bars & tavernas. The village is dotted with several churches, some of which were built in the period between the 11th and 15th centuries. Close to Pigi there have been many important archaeological finds. The village has a nice square with kafeneions, tavernas, a bakery and a mini-market.
