The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a dishwasher, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and washer/dryer. The dining area has an antique pine table and four dining chairs. The first floor open plan bedroom has French windows looking out over a lovely rockery, lily pool and across rolling countryside. The gym is spacious, light and airy and equipped with aerobic equipment, free weights, an ab trainer, an exercise bench and exercise mats. All of the aerobic equipment is either Life Fitness equipment (including a treadmill, a cross trainer, a stepper, an upright cycle and a recumbent cycle) or Concept 11 equipment (a rower). Interaction with guestsWhen we created Downe Cottages our objective was to provide the holiday accommodation that we would have loved to find. We are very demanding visitors when we stay in hotels or cottages and we insisted that our cottages be: Immaculately clean. Warm whatever the weather. Spacious (a cottage cannot be luxurious without being spacious). Well equipped so that our visitors can come bringing only their clothes, their food and themselves. Beautiful to look at both internally and externally. With well maintained, spacious grounds We welcome visitors to the cottage and we are on hand to resolve any problem that might occur. Everything in our cottages works as it is intended to work.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

The best holiday rental I have ever stayed in.
Vine cottage is just superb. It was spotlessly clean and beautifully presented. It is airy and comfortable - the sofas are squashy and lovely to curl up into with a good book. The appliances are immaculate - I wish my oven looked half as good! There is everything you could want, but if by chance you need something in particular you only have to ask. Jeremy and Linda are lovely people and very keen that you have the best holiday possible. The spa facilities are again spotless and fresh. We used to put our dinner in the oven, have a couple of rounds of bubbles in the spa pool by which time our dinner was ready. A fabulous way to end a busy day. The towels are huge and fluffy in the spa and the cottage and lovely bathrobes are provided for your stay too. There is a lot to see within a very short distance and we thoroughly enjoyed our week, indeed we could have stayed longer quite happily. We walked to Hartland and to Hartland Quay quite easily. The gorgeous Hartland Abbey is just at the bottom of the hill and again an easy (if you don't mind hills) walk. In short I can't recommend Downe Cottages and Vine Cottage in particular highly enough.

Lived up to reviews!
Just spent a long weekend here and we were hugely impressed. Very clean, well maintained and spacious accommodation. Great facilities (including gym, which we hadn't packed for!). Very pleasant owners, who could not do enough for you. Good base for exploring a beautiful part of the country. Will definitely return here again

Will visit again"
We are from the Buckingham Winslow area and we really enjoyed our short visit at the Vine Cottage. The cottage was spacious, clean and well equipped, and to add our son who started crawling enjoyed the space in the cottage. It was tranquil, peaceful and beautiful views which made this holiday even better. I would highly recommend it and will visit again soon.

Perfection!
What a super base for a holiday in this magnificent walking countryside! Lovely cottages; immaculately furnished with all you need for a week or two's stay; great views from benches/tables in a shared common area as well as your own personal patio; super-efficient and very available caretakers; wonderful walking straight out the front door; and many super pubs within a few miles. Half-hour's walk to the nearest village (Hartland) with village stores, etc. -- though none of the 3 local pubs is currently even close to the high standard of those in neighboring villages

So lovely
We stood in Vine Cottage for three days and it was so lovely. Claire welcomed us very friendly. We got wine and bread and butter. The area is wide and trim. Everything was clean. We can really recommend this wonderful place. So quite with amazing view to the sea. Thank you so much Claire for your help because of my pain. Emma was great:)

Vine was lovely
Just returned from 5 nights staying in Vine. What a beautiful spot, so peaceful and sunsets to remember! The cottage was ideal for two (there was also a single bed if needed) lots of little touches that make the difference between a good holiday cottage and an average one. Alan and Claire were very welcoming and helpful. We had an issue with the loo which was fixed swiftly and they expressed their gratitude for us having mentioned it. Certainly hope to make a return visit.

Absolute peace and quiet - perfectly tranquil
We enjoyed a 3 night break in Vine Cottage and would recommend it without hesitation. The location is perfect for a relaxing 'away from it all' break. The cottage was beautifully clean and had absolutely everything to make our short break enjoyable. We ordered a meal from the 'in-house menu' on one evening and would certainly recommend eating in at least once. The food was excellent. Jeremy welcomed us and showed us around the cottage and then we were left to enjoy our holiday. Both Lynda and Jeremy really want their guests to enjoy the area and the cottages. We didn't try the spa, simply because there were so many places we wanted to visit and didn't find time to use the facilities provided. So refreshing to find a cottage which ticks all the boxes.

Relaxing stay in Vine Cottage at Downe Farm.
We stayed 4 nights over august Bank Holiday and were thoroughly impressed. Jeremy and Lynda were friendly and welcoming and the cottage was one of the cleanest and best prepared we've ever stayed in. Fantastic location and the views over the hills to the sea were amazing. The Spa was a great added bonus and the staff there were professional and friendly. We'd certainly come again and in fact will likely do so next year. Tony & Bev.

Very relaxing and enjoyable
A quiet and secluded location in a lovely area. High spec accommodation with the added advantage of a spa, which I can recommend!. Loved the wood-burning stove as the evenings were a bit cool despite it being august. Jeremy and Lynda are charming and nothing phases them - even when our washing machine failed, use of another was immediately offered! The very detailed guide compiled by them and left in the cottage was packed with lots of insights ... where to eat, things to do. Very useful.

About the neighbourhood
The Cottage is set within a beautiful courtyard formed by a group of old stone barns which have been lovingly converted to provide luxury self-catering cottages. The ambiance of courtyard is quiet, peaceful, perfect rest and repose. Downe is located in the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and looks West over the Atlantic (next stop America), North up to Lundy Island and (if you stand on tip toe on a little hill in our garden) East into Bideford Bay. The star attraction of the locality is the North Devon Coast - rugged, raw and majestic with numerous picturesque small coves and beaches.
Getting around
A car is highly recommended for visitors to Downe. It makes everything so much easier particularly utilizing the variety of restaurants in the area. Having said that we regularly get visitors who park their car in the garage on arrival and next use their car on the day of departure. We do have visitors stay with us who come without a car and we can arrange for them to be collected from Barnstaple Station if they travel by rail or from Bideford if they travel by coach

How to get there
We provide detailed directions when we confirm the booking. The directions include details of the supermarkets visitors pass in the last half hour of the journey and suggest places to stop and eat on the journey down. We believe the journey down to Downe should be part of the holiday and our recommendations of places to eat is part of this approach.
