BEACHES, BIOBAY AND OTHER ATTRACTIONS: Beaches Near By: Good Beaches within walking distance from Casa de Kathy • Esperanza Beach (7 minutes walking). • Sun Bay, Media Luna, Navio (between 20 to 60 minutes walking) • Coco Beach (7 minutes) Good Snorkeling within walking distance • Under the long pier in Esperanza • Cayo Afuera (Outside Key), the island in front of the restaurants, is the best close-by snorkeling. Rent a kayak or borrow my dive ring to avoid being hit by a boat. • Shore in front of the Malecon (get in at Bananas and swim west towards Trade Winds). • Coco Beach is west of the Malecon and has good snorkeling. Black Sand Beach – One hour to walk there and come back leisurely. Beaches in the eastern Wildlife Refuge (formerly the U.S. Navy base): All the refuge beaches have pretty white sand and are good swimming and snorkeling. • Playa Caracas (renamed Red Beach by the Navy). Snorkel on the east side (left). • Playa La Chiva (Blue Beach). snorkel on the east side of the big island in the bay and along shore on the sandy point in front of the island. • Playa La Plata (Silver Beach). You need a car or bike to get to these beaches. Taxis to Red Beach: $15 for two people each way, $20 for four. Taxis to Blue Beach: $45 up to three people. North & West Coast Beaches - Playa Gallito (just before the airport), the beach on the east side of the Mosquito Pier and the end of the pier, and Playa Arenas (Green Beach) are popular for swimming and snorkeling. Bio Bay Tours / Snorkeling Trips - One of Vieques’ most famous and enjoyable attractions is the “Bio-Bay”. It is best experienced with little or no moon. • Abe's Bio Bay & Snorkeling • JAK Water Sports (clear bottom kayaks) • Melaya's Bio Bay Tours • Taino Bio Bay Tours • Bieke Eco-Tours • Fun Brothers • Island Adventures (electric & paddle boat) Horseback Riding: Esperanza Riding Company – trails on the coast and behind Esperanza Taxi Horses - trails along beaches and hills on the north coast near the airport Sea Gate Hotel - trails outside of Isabel II, near ferry dock Other Attractions - I recommend a trip to the Conde Mirasol Fort & Museum and the Punta Mula Lighthouse in Isabel II. It is also worth a trip to the Puerto Ferro archaeological site north of the entrance to Sun Bay, about a quarter of a mile on the left. In the west, visit the 375 year old ceiba tree, Mosquito pier, the ecumenical chapel & Laguna Kiani. SHOPPING AND OTHER STUFF: Stores - El Dulce Panaderia (bakery) and Colmado Lydia (variety store) -one block away. La Tienda Verde (Green Store) at the entrance of Esperanza is a bigger variety store. Spanish Language - If you are a native English-speaker and also know some Spanish, be brave and USE IT. Although many people in Vieques understand English, they will appreciate you trying to speak their primary language. ATM’s – There are two ATM’s in the banks in Isabel II. And a few private ones in Esperanza. Unlimited Wi-Fi is available. Recycling We recycle aluminum, plastic, cardboard and paper. Best Radio Station: 90.1 Radio Vieques

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

What more could you ask for?
Kathy has obviously been doing this for a while - pretty much everything we needed was right within reach including beach chairs, towels, AC and fans, kitchen and bath supplies, TV, music and a fascinating collection of local history and tourism books. She was a very attentive host and even organized a cocktail party on our last night where we were able to meet a very nice couple from Sweden who were renting er other unit. Highly recommended!

Ken and his family were happy, laid back guests and were a pleasure to host. They did not rent a car but took a taxi to our famous Playa Caracas in the Wildlife Refuge to do some snorkeling. They also walked to the Esperanza beach and snorkeled at the pier. I enjoyed getting to know them.

Great! Mangos, cute pets, and great location.
We stayed here for two weeks during our honeymoon in June of 2015. Kathy was very friendly and helpful. She was always willing to discuss/provide tips on the best beaches, places to eat, or how to get around the island. She also frequently left fresh cut fruit by our door and other little extras. She has the sweetest set of pets (a cat, Dolly, and dog, Lovey) that were happy to let you scratch their ears while they slept in the shade. It is located a few streets up from the Malecon. Enough distance that is was incredibly quiet but still less than an 8 minute walk from the main street. (If it was really hot we walked slowly because it isn't that far) The studio we stayed in had one bed, one bathroom, and a small kitchenette (toaster and a hot plate). It is attached to the main portion of the house that Kathy lives in. We were there two weeks and it never felt like we were invading her space or her ours. I can't recall if there was a TV but the internet was fine. Clean, neat, and comfortable. We would highly recommend this place to stay! Kathy is very hospitable and we felt like whatever we may need she was willing to either provide or tell us how we could get it! A note-Kathy is very conscientious about conservation:she recycles, asks that you only use the AC when needed, etc. This fit with our view so it was no problem at all -I only mention this in case someone really really loves AC, you may want to bring a fan :-) However, this is a pretty common theme on the island.

Thanks to Brian and Brie for this very positive review. I enjoyed hosting them. I do need to clarify that they did NOT stay in the two bedroom apartment which has a full kitchen, living room and two bedrooms. The studio accommodates two people. Also note that both apartments have modern air conditioners and fans in every room making them very comfortable. Guests are encouraged to use all of the amenities, including the AC whenever they wish. Kathy

Casa de Kathy is located in the coastal neighborhood of Esperanza, two blocks from the famous "malecon" or boardwalk where you will find the beach and restaurants. You can walk one block to a bakery and convenience store. The houses are painted vibrant colors, lush vegetation abounds, and dogs, cats, chickens, roosters and horses roam our streets. How to get there
Many of my guests just walk to the beaches, bio-bay tour pick-up, and restaurants. For remote beaches, you can take a taxi or rent a car, bike or scooter. Taxis to Playa Caracas in the Wildlife Refuge is, for example, $15 each way for two people. Scooter rentals are about $50-60 per day. Car rentals are about $60-85 per day.
