CRAIGSTON CHAPEL. Craigston chapel was built in the 1930's , on the grounds of Craigston Great House….itself built in 1784….. to serve the Catholic community of the nearby village of Bogles. The story goes that the completed building was never consecrated, as plans changed, and over time the building was used as a store room and an animal pen….as a young boy growing up at Craigston I remember a flock of sheep being penned there at night and streaming out to pasture in the morning.

Having lost the roof in a long forgotten hurricane, it was refurbished as a cottage in 1968, and has recently (2015) undergone another up-grade and modernization.

The building has very thick stone walls……making for a cool interior…. in European Farmhouse style, and is essentially one room internally with a partition separating off the bedroom from the ope...

Interaction with guests
Guests are met at The Chapel by Faithlyn or Michael who are regular staff at Craigston Great House. An arrival time needs to be arranged once the booking is confirmed. They will give you the various keys, the local phone and answer any immediate questions as well as explain about the water system. Guests should be aware that Carriacou is a Water Scarce island with government piped water to only about 2% of the homes. Craigston is totally dependant upon Rain Water which is collected in the large cistern and piped to the main house and the Chapel. Water is gravity fed to the showers and sinks. This encourages conservation of water.

About the neighbourhood
Craigston Chapel is located on the grounds of Craigston Great House but has its own secondary entrance and parking area and is quite hidden by foliage from the Great House. Being located close to the main road to Hillsborough and to the 2 beaches on the Craigston property, The Chapel allows one to manage without a vehicle if that is their wish. Buses do run irregularly on the main road and some guests enjoy walking.
Getting around
Small vans (private buses) run around the island and one can go to most of the main inhabited areas. There is a bus 'terminal' in Hillsborough and most people including the tourist board will be happy to help you master public transportation. However, If you wish to go to Anse La Roche -- a lovely secluded bay located north of Bogles-- you will have to walk from Bogles unless you have a rental vehicle -- an SUV is more suitable as the roads are very rough. To experience the restaurants in the Harvey Vale/Tyrell Bay area a car is necessary for most unless you are a very experienced walker!!
Car advised
How to get there
Airport: Lauriston : 5.0 km
Ferry: Hillsborough: 3.0 km
Book your flight to Grenada on various international airlines-- BA, Virgin, Air Canada, Jet Blue, AA, LIAT etc and then you have the option of a connecting flight on SVG (St Vincent & the Grenadines Airline) or using the daily ferry service from Grenada.
You can book SVG on line-- do note that their luggage restrictions are not the same as the international carriers. Depending on your connections, it may be necessary to over night in a guest house or hotel in Grenada. Others prefer to take the ferry which allows them more luggage. You can ask us specific questions if necessary.
