Beautiful home for large group or families
On our third visit to St John, we needed a house to accommodate 8 people, 3 couples and two teens. This house was our pick as it met a few of our "must haves" pool on main level, bed room for elderly on main level, stocked kitchen, outdoor space, beautiful views, king beds. You are close to the beaches on the North Shore, less than 2 miles from Maho. Close to restaurants in Coral Bay, which we love. The house is an easy drive from Cruz Bay and we were greeted by a guide that the owners had meet us at the car ferry and drove us to the house and they walked us through the house to show us around and give us keys, etc. When we arrived the house was clean and ready for the week. They even provide a small snack/drink basket upon arrival. The first thing you notice are the views. You can see Tortola, Coral Bay and more from the pool deck. It was nearing sunset and the views spectacular. The beds were comfortable, comfy sheets and blankets, bedrooms have AC, the main living space does not. With the ceiling fans on and the doors open (on all sides of the space) there is a nice cross breeze that keeps the area comfortable. The only "complaint" is that the humidity leaves the couch and other upholstery feeling a bit tacky and sticky, but not a huge deal. The sectional and large chaise could use a cleaning and are showing wear and tear that is expected in a home that takes weekly rentals and likely hosts a lot of families with children. When we arrived, the hot tub was empty and we were a little surprised that the owners didn't share this information and disappointed as we were looking forward to using the hot tub in the evenings. However, mid-week apparently someone came by while we were at the beach and when came back that evening, one of the kids realized that the hot tub had been filled and was working! We took advantage of using it each night after - thank you! We couldn't get the keys to work at first, but found a second set of keys that worked on a couple of the bedroom doors, not really necessary as the house has a gated entry with an access code and we didn't feel it necessary to lock the house when we left. There is a safe, but we didn't know the code or how to change (like a hotel safe) for our use. It would have been nice for jewelry, passports, etc; but again - not a big deal.
We planned to cook meals at the house such as breakfast and a few dinners and stopped in St Thomas at Cost U Less before taking the car ferry to St John and we loved how well stocked the kitchen is with pots & pans, baking dishes, utensils, plenty of dishes and glassware for a group. The gas range is new and worked great, but the fridge has seen its better days. The seal is worn and the inside of the fridge has to run constantly to keep things cold and everything inside is wet from condensation. We had to shuffle things around as the top shelf froze our bread and meat. Might be time to replace. There is a microwave, toaster oven, coffee makers, espresso machine, blender, and more. There is a pantry for storing snacks and dry goods. We could only find two dish towels for drying dishes, but there was plenty of dish soap, dishwasher pods and coffee filters for our use for the week. There are a few spices, but no basics so depending our meal plans, consider bringing a few basic or purchase upon arrival.
Each bathroom (each room is an en suite) had two sets of towels for use, plenty of toilet paper and shampoo & conditioner provided as well if your forget. The main floor bedroom has a comfy bed, but it squeaks something fierce. Any movement makes the bed frame squeak loudly. Don't know if some tightening would make this stop, but worth a look as the bed doesn't show much wear and is in good shape. My in-laws stayed in the other room on the main level that has two twins. My father-in-law said the mattress sags a bit and he felt that he "fell" into a hole where it sags, but not uncomfortable. Every bedroom has a great view of Coral Bay and sunrises are easily seen if you leave the curtains open, which we didn't to keep the rooms cool during the day.
There are plenty of eating areas, the large, 8 person dining table off of the kitchen, a 4 top glass table in the living space for playing cards; another large table outside with chairs and a bench where we played cards and ate; and another able when you walk in the gate to the house which has a supply of sunscreen, aloe and bug spray (probably left from visitors) and was a great place to drop beach bags. The house has floats for use at the beach or in the pool, coolers and beach chairs for 8 people as well as a beach umbrella. A large washer and two dryers were great for mid-week laundry and drying towels after a day at the beach.
We reached out to the owners with a couple of questions and they were quick to respond and even sent someone over during the week to replace the bluetooth speaker that we used by the pool. The house audio connected for us, but we couldn't get music to play or be heard. There is a TV with appleTV, but based on what your provider allows, we could not use our TV provider to watch Purdue (a trial Fubo account fixed the issue).
Overall thoughts: this is a beautiful home with amazing views and all the amenities we wanted in a vacation rental. The owners were helpful and responsive to our questions. The home is showing some wear and tear that is expected when you have a rental unit such as this and a few things could be updated but this did not take away from our stay. A little TLC and replacing basic items that are worn or broken would make a difference but we had all that needed and more for a relaxing stay in St John. We will likely stay here again next year.
