Cabin Holiday Rental
Heron's Nest log cabin, part of Willowbank Lodges, nestles in a small hamlet in the heart of the Pewsey Vale bordering the Kennet and Avon canal. The five luxury log cabins have been solidly built from Russian redwood and are situated in three and a half acres including a private lake and are surrounded by beautiful countryside and a wide variety of wildlife. Heron's Nest cabin directly overlooks the stream and facing due west, is the sunniest cabin on site so gets the sun in the early evening after everyone else has been cast into shade. Ramblers and cyclists alike will enjoy the miles of walks straight from the cabin gates with panoramic views of the Pewsey Vale from Martinsell Hill and of course we are on the National 4 cycle trail. Our ancient Savernake Forest is only a 5 minute drive away and is quite stunningly beautiful whether you are walking, picnicking or cycling. The cabins provide a superb holiday base from which to explore the ancient county of Wiltshire and are easily accessed from the M3 and M4. Furthermore, the airports of London Heathrow, Bristol, Southampton and Bournemouth are between one and one and a half hours drive away. The local village of Pewsey is less than two miles away and boasts a good supermarket, butcher, baker, petrol station, garage, Indian restaurant, cafes and pubs and it also has a railway station with a fast train service to London and the West Country. No smoking is allowed in the cabins but can be enjoyed outside under the cover of the veranda. Well behaved dogs welcome and verandas now have gates therefore secure for dogs and young children. Just what we needed.
Wow! Herons Lodge wowed us the minute we pulled up and continued doing so once we got inside. It was fully equipped with everything you could possibly need and more. Nicky has put a lot of thought into the design. Loved the fact that the bathroom even had a decent-sized bath too. Bedding is top quality and super comfortable. Even the planting of bushes on the surrounding grounds offers a screen of privacy from the other lodges. We enjoyed the sun setting every evening on the balcony. Also perfect spot for some stargazing with no light pollution. Just the sounds of nature to soothe you. We loved walking around the pond watching the wildlife. Spotted 2 Red Kites circling overhead. A Robin that paid us a visit on the garden gate most mornings. Was fortunate to see the very large cygnets with their parents on the pond, plus the ducks. The Kennet and Avon canal is about a 5-minute walk away. We walked into Pewsey via the towpath. Took about 45 minutes. Lots of barge boats on route and people so friendly, plus lots of scenery. We never got around to walking the other direction towards Wotton Rivers but we did pay the local pub there a visit for lunch. Again very friendly locals. The village is full of thatched cottages. We also visited Malborough during our visit. Well worth the visit. Lots of independent shops to explore amongst the historic architecture. We are already planning a return visit to the lodge, as a regular treat. It was an ideal spot for some much-needed downtime for us both. Nicky was also quick to answer any questions too. A great host. Highly recommended.

Blissful peace and quiet!
We arrived with snow on the ground and were delighted by the warmth and cosiness of our cabin. Everything we needed was provided and the cabins are very tastefully presented. The setting is peaceful and beautiful with plenty of wildfowl for interest. A lovely walk along the canal path in either direction will take you to excellent pubs for lunch. Great area for dog walking, but at Willow Bank it is best to keep them on the lead so they don’t disturb the wildfowl. The nearby village of Pewsey can provide for most of your needs and Marlborough with its very attractive town centre is only 15 minutes drive away. We had a great time and definitely plan to return!

Thank you for your lovely and very comprehensive review. I was on holiday in hotter climes when the UK had a second bout of snow, so could only read about it and be thankful that I was not there! I am so glad that despite the cold weather you enjoyed the cosiness of the cabin and managed to have a great time. It is a very good place to chill and just watch all the wildlife. We are lucky to be in a beautiful part of Wiltshire yet conveniently close to all the amenities of Pewsey and Marlborough. I am very happy that you would like to return and look forward to meeting you both then.

serenity retreat
We are originally from the area, and came back for the weekend for a family occasion. We had a wonderful weekend reminiscing about our childhoods in Mildenhall and Burbage. The cabin was perfectly located for us to visit the local villages and towns. We had some fantastic walks down the tow paths, envying the barge owners on the canal. The dogs were exhausted and very happy for all the lovely walks they had, especially Savernake Forest. The cabin was extremely well equipped, warm and cozy. Nicky was very helpful and welcoming. I would highly recommend Willowbank Lodges and can't wait to return.

A peaceful corner of Wiltshire
We enjoyed staying at Heron's Nest in September. The site is lovely, with grassy areas, a stream, pools and trees. Our cabin was partially screened from others by shrubs and small trees - the pictures on their website (willowbanklodges.com) give a good impression of the site. If you're out early in the morning the mist over the pool is beautiful. I did see a kingfisher, besides the resident swans who ambled past occasionally. Because there are only five accommodations, it's a relaxed and quiet site. It's situated down a very quiet lane in the Vale of Pewsey, but it's only five minutes drive from Pewsey which has shops (including a good co-op) pubs, a train station and buses. The cabin was clean, warm, dry and certainly spacious enough for the two of us, and I think would be very comfortable all year round. In warm weather the verandah provides an additional space. We used the cabin as a base for walking on the Wiltshire downs (visiting several white horses carved in the hillsides nearby). Their website lists many of the attractions within an easy drive. It's also two minutes walk down the lane from the Kennet and Avon Canal, which winds peacefully through the area and offers some walking on the flat along the tow-path. We'd certainly go again.

Hello! Thank you so much for your very kind comments and for such a comprehensive review about the immediate vicinity which I am sure other travellers will find very helpful. How wonderful you saw one of our kingfishers - a guest has reported seeing them flying down the stream in front of Herons Nest in a pair which must be quite a rare sight! I look forward to seeing you again sometime in the future.

Not disability friendly!
Made inquiries in April (email and telephone) regarding a prospective booking in September 2017 and needs arising from my disability. Alas Nicky's 24 hour 100% response rate appears not to be applicable to those of us who are disabled - as three weeks later I've still had no response. 2017 and it would appear that for some service providers the disabled are still a no go area. Shame on You!!!

Hello Peter! I am very surprised to receive such a damning 'review' and one which strongly suggests I have not responded to your enquiry because of your disability! If you left a telephone message then I have not personally taken it off the ansafone, as I do respond to all messages - this is how I earn my income so all enquiries are important to me. Up until 10 days ago my daughter was living with me and I can only think that she took down your message then forgot to give it to me, in which case my apologies. These things occasionally happen when the business is run from home and other family members are around. As far as any email enquiry is concerned, I have just done a search of my Inbox, my Sent box and have searched my personal hotmail account to which a copy of all my business emails are sent as a back up. Furthermore, I have trawled through all my emails back to 1st April to see if I have missed replying to any of them in case your email did not include your name in it and, again, nothing has flagged up. I have dealt with everything. Perhaps you thought you sent me an email but didn't press the Send button, or sent it to a different address by mistake, easy to do if you were looking at a lot of different accommodation at the time. I have had a lot of disabled people stay at the cabins, some requiring special equipment to be delivered and I am only too aware of the lack of accommodation which is suitable for people with mobility problems so am very pleased to be able to offer my lodges which are suitable for most of their needs. If you would like to phone me again or send an email to nickywood@willowbanklodges.com, I would be delighted to tell you whether or not one of the cabins (I have two sizes) would be suitable for you and whether or not the dates fit. Best wishes, Nicky Wood

The best place in the UK to unwind and relax
Heron's nest is a wonderful log cabin. It is tastefully decorated and has absolutely everything you need for a very relaxing stay. We had the best week just relaxing in the cabin, sitting on the veranda and taking our Labrador for some lovely walks. Nicky is really lovely and we met Pete the grounds man - who was also very helpful and welcoming. We would recommend this to all who say " We would just like to relax and do nothing for a week". It was brilliant !!

About the neighbourhood
Pewsey is a charming little village which is less than two miles from Willowbank Lodges and, although small, boasts a surprising number of ameneties. We have an excellent supermarket open seven days a week, a butcher, baker (delicious old fashioned donuts and lardy bread!) petrol station, post office, bank, gift shops, florists, art gallery and visitor centre, internet cafe and various coffee shops and pubs. In addition, we have an excellent award winning tennis club where Willowbank Lodges has membership for its guests and a leisure centre with a swimming pool, squash courts, etc. Slightly further afield, Marlborough boasts a large variety of restaurants and pubs, boutiques, antique shops, two fine churches and has the widest high street in the country. Now it is probably more famous for its International Jazz Festival which takes place in July (13th-15th this year) – a glut of musicians and singers, new bands and old favourites from all over the world, really an experience not to miss. Another music festival taking place this year (April 14th) just north of Marlborough is OneFest with Damon Albarn giving us a preview of his Dr Dee. Local artists open up their studios (Open Studios) to the public during four weekends in July so what with other local musical and artistic events, plenty for those who want to absorb a little local culture. For those crop circle enthusiasts, we are right in the midst of crop circle country and usually there are quite a number of sometimes quite spectacular crop circles to be found on the Downs or in the Vale, within 10 minutes drive of Willowbank Lodges.

Notes from owner
The calendars show Friday to Friday prices though in the off peak seasons I can often accommodate other start dates so please do enquire. In the peak summer months I will occasionally take a Friday to Monday and Monday to Friday booking but am mostly looking for a minimum of a one week booking. If you choose 4, 5 or 6 nights then the daily rate becomes cheaper so please ask for a quote and I will also accept some two night bookings depending on the time of year. Dogs are an additional £3 per dog per night. Currently I am adding a small fee of £20 to each booking to cover the additional laundry and cleaning costs as a result of Covid. Longer term and business lets taken so please enquire for a quote.
