A fabulous all weather tennis court and practice wall, beautiful swimming pool, boules pitch and acres of olive grove provide a wonderful backdrop for a truly relaxing holiday. You really can while away whole days in the garden, but if you do want to venture further afield, Bargemon is also an excellent base from which to explore all that the region has to offer. There are several hiking and cycling trails that pass through the village itself, and a number of spectacular golf courses and water sports within a short drive of the village. Activities for our more intrepid guests include: rock climbing, gorge-walking, paragliding, skiing, kayaking and horse riding, whilst those simply looking to unwind may prefer an afternoon of wine tasting, or an excursion to the coast.

A great place to stay, situated in a charming mediaeval village.
The Keep is an enjoyable place to stay, forming part of a 12th century chateau in the fortified hill village of Bargemon. It's very spacious, is well equipped, and sits on a number of levels though, essentially, there is ground floor and an upstairs floor. It has a large banqueting table downstairs in a room which can be opened up to a small patio facing onto the street - a great place for a coffee and croissant from the excellent local bakery. There is access to a private garden behind the chateau's main entrance where you can make use of the large pic-nic table and a BBQ. In addition, just a few paces away, there is a very large garden with a fabulous swimming pool, a tennis court and views over the valley to the neighbouring hill top village of Claviers. Bargemon itself is an ancient and a gentle place where people enjoy life. There are plenty of bars and restaurants for such a small village, mainly gathered around the village square which is well shaded by plane trees. If you're tempted to stay here it's well worth visiting Claviers which has a friendly bar by the pétanque pitch and our favourite restaurant right next door.

Loved it. Perfect stay.
We've been visiting Le Vieux Chateau in Bargemon for 30 years and in that time have stayed in most of the "appartements." They are all very different, reflecting both their history and the taste of their current owner. Everything the hosts say about Bargemon - the relaxed vibe in the Square, the quality of the eateries and the surroundings is absolutely true, but the unique joy of staying in the Chateau is the "Grand Jardin," just a few paces from The Keep, and it's glorious swimming pool. There's tennis too if that's your bag. The main Chateau building isn't far away and sits in it's own "Petit Jardin" where you can have a barbeque and sit at a large table overlooking the valley below and the neighbouring hilltop village of Claviers, just a few miles away. The Keep itself is very spacious and quite luxurious, with a large banqueting table downstairs next to a well appointed kitchen. You can open up the large external doors and sit out on a mini patio to enjoy watching the world go by. There is a small mezzanine floor, and upstairs two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a comfortable sitting room. We and our friends really enjoyed our stay there and would certainly hope to return. Finally, I would make the point that in these Covid troubled times, the hosts, Toby and Amelia, proved exceptionallly helpful.

Another fantastic visit
We stayed for a week this year and wished we had stayed for two. The Keep itself is just right for our family. The kitchen is a great spec so eating in sometimes and making lunches or picnics is easy. You can get everything you need in Bargemon to self cater and there is a market on a Thursday: there’s good cheese, olives and a wider selection of fruit and veg. Doing a big shop at a supermarket will be cheaper so you may want stock up. Once we’re in Bargemon we tend to just want to relax. There are restaurants within walking distance too, so no need to cook if you don’t want to, but making a reservation is advisable for the popular ones (even if you only do it at lunchtime for that evening). We sent the children out to get the pastries and bread from the bakery around the corner every morning. On the Friday morning, when the housekeeper came, we decided to eat our almond croissants by the pool and it was absolutely glorious. The pool is amazing! If you want there are trips and things to see in the area and we did a couple of Trips but mostly the children just love the pool.

Wonderful visit to the Keep
Stayed for 3 weeks with 2 small children, and other friends /grandparents coming to visit. Apartment is great as you can see from the photos but the real star is the heated massive swimming pool in the beautiful communal gardens (shared only with the château apartments so never felt busy and we often had it to ourselves). The town is classic provence with great restaurants and we loved walking 2 mins to the artisan bakery every morning. Cots / high chair provided.

Second visit to this idyllic French hideaway in the hills
Typically a second visit to a favourite restaurant or watching a movie for the second time isn't as good as the first. The food isn't as good as you remember it and you know the Good Guys are going to survive in the end... A second visit to The Keep, however, was just as satisfying, if not more so. Toby and Amelia's relaxed and welcoming attitude is on point from the moment you book. The place itself is full of French charm and the facilities are beautifully maintained. Not much beats an escape to the ancient, sleepy, fortified, hilltop-towns of the South of France. Staying in the Keep at Bargemon is just doing it in style.

Wonderful place!
We stayed at another property within the chateau last year for 2 weeks and absolutely loved everything about it - the house, the gardens, the swimming pool, tennis court and the village literally on the doorstep. We were determined to return but with 3 teenage boys (who also loved it) decided to mix it up a bit this year so spent a fabulous week in the Alps first. Anyway, The Keep, and Bargemon as a destination, completely lived up to our expectations. The property has everything you need for a really comfortable stay and I can honestly say we have never seen such a beautiful swimming pool or a tennis court with such a spectacular back drop. Tiny niggle was the very basic DVD player - it is a quiet place and so with 3 teenagers in tow we had brought a number of brand new films to watch but having tried two which stuck after a few minutes we gave up. Not a big deal but it would be very easy to install a decent DVD player at little expense! Anyway overall The Keep is a really lovely property in a fantastic location and we would recommend it without hesitation to anyone.

Thanks for the great review Rhona and we’d love to have you and your family back to stay at The Keep. Thanks for pointing out the need for a decent DVD player - we replaced our TV last year and so will make sure that a new DVD player is installed before next season! Toby & Amelia

An idyllic holiday in a quintessentially French village, perfect in every way
This is our second stay at this charming property and it didn't disappoint; put simply, this is a gorgeous place to stay. The Keep is very well fitted out and charmingly decorated, with plenty of kitchen equipment and a very nice communal kitchen, which has massive double doors that open out onto the quaint alleyway. The pool and gardens are simply magnificent, with amazing views. We enjoyed hours of wine-infused badminton games on the gorgeous lawn (the scoring becoming more erratic and contentious as time went on). Bargemon itself is a quintessentially French medieval village and everyone was delightfully friendly. Trees shade the village square where everyone tends to congregate and watch the world go by, the old drinking water fountains and medieval water channels all adding to the charm. Talking of the water drainage systems, it was unfortunate that it rained for a lot of our visit, which is extremely unusual for this region at this time of year. This could have spelled disaster for a family holiday with two teenagers and two occasionally (OK, let's be honest, usually) grumpy grandparents in tow. But there was so much to do and see, and the property is so comfortable, that the rainy spells didn't spoil our enjoyment in any way. We often whiled the rain away playing cards in the kitchen, windows open, calling out an occasional 'bonjour' in response to passers by. It couldn't have been more relaxing - an idyllic, traditional French holiday.

About the neighbourhood
Bargemon is a charming village in the Haut-Var region of Provence, an area characterised by vineyards, densely wooded forests and rolling hills, upon which perch ancient former fortress towns. Nestled amongst olive groves, vineyards and rolling wooded countryside, the village still retains vestiges of its medieval architecture and fortified walls. Once you've finished exploring the village, then you'll be amazed to find out just how many exciting things there are to do and see all within a hour of Bargemon village. From traditional Provençal markets, to wine tasting, hiking, golf, cycling, kayaking, gorge-walking, beaches and climbing, the region offers something for absolutely everyone to enjoy.
Getting around
Getting to Bargemon is most easily done by picking up a hire car at either Nice or Toulon airports and driving the 75min trip. However, once you're in Bargemon, you can easily park up and forget your car for the first few days of your stay as there is so much to do within easy walking distance of The Keep. But once you've had your fill of exploring the ancient city streets and enjoying the swimming pool and tennis court in the chateau garden, you will find lots to do just a short drive from the village.
