A delightful, 3 bedroom house set in the beautiful village of Alstonefield; less than a mile from Dovedale in the heart of the Peak Our property is Grade II listed and was originally the Black Lion public house. In 1782 it, along with the adjoining properties, became the Alstonefield Poor Law Union Workhouse. In later years it has also served as a variety of different shops, including one from which the locals could purchase fish and chips. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Lovely house in a great location
The Hermitage is a lovely and very comfortable cottage, we had a lovely time there. The walks from the house to Dovedale were great and the pub just done the road was an added bonus. Lovely cottage in a great location!

A wonderful stay
We have just had the most wonderful stay here. Both the house and the ‘ secret garden’ are stunning; the photos do not do it justice. The beds were very comfortable and had lovely cotton sheets and duvets. The house was immaculately clean and milk, delicious biscuits, tea and coffee were there on arrival. We walked from the house both days only taking the car to The Black Inn at Butterton Saturday evening…. the meal was delicious. We are all hoping to return to The Hermitage sometime soon.

Relaxing break in beautiful property
We were two couples who spent a relaxing 4 nights at the Hermitage. The property is beautifully renovated and furnished to a very high standard. Great selection of kitchen utensils and sharp knives made it a pleasure to prepare meals on nights in. Good range of board games, books and DVDs too. Beautiful secret garden which would be a great spot to relax in warmer weather! Plenty of pubs a short drive away, the Black Lion was a favourite and walks straight from the front door - perfect!

Relaxed and cozy
We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful listed building. The Hermitage is luxurious but comfortable and an ideal, cozy retreat after a good day of walking. We enjoyed walks from the house into Milldale and Dovedale, as well as travelling a little further into the Peak District to learn more about the area. This is a great base for a relaxing break.

Absolutely delightful stay in a high quality home
The Hermitage is simply the most beautiful, comfortable and thoughtful holiday home ever! We had the best time, thank you so much Jacky and Martin. There were 6 old friends and everyone was full of compliments for the place the whole weekend - absolutely stunning finishes throughout and you can tell how much care and love has gone into creating this wonderful sanctuary! The secret garden was a wonder to discover with the most beautiful views of rolling fields. We had an amazing walk over the fields to Thor’s Cave and a delightful meal at The Black Lion Inn just down the road (4ish miles). A truly magical stay and I would highly recommend not passing on the opportunity to stay here and enjoy all that is has to offer - of which there’s a great deal! Lovely, high quality and comfortable stay.

Superb Accommodation in a lovely part of the Peak District
We have had a very enjoyable Christmas holiday at the Hermitage. The accommodation is superb: beautifully decorated and welcoming (including festive touches), warm and comfortable, and with character and all the mod cons we needed. We didn't have the best of weather, so sadly we weren't able to get out and explore the countryside much, but we still had a great time and would love to come back in the future. Thank you to Martin & Jacky for being the perfect hosts!

We will definitely be back again
This is our third stay at The Hermitage. It is the most beautiful house for a holiday. The owners have such good taste and it is decorated and furnished to the highest standard. The owners respond quickly to enquiries and give you all of the information you need for your stay at the property. We are starting to see this as our second home. We’ve stayed twice in the winter and once over August bank holiday, being there in the summer we were able to enjoy the ‘secret garden’ Beds are comfortable. Bedding and towels are highest quality and the kitchen is well equipped. There are lots of lovely walks straight from the property and it’s just a short drive to Ashbourne, Buxton & Bakewell. There is absolutely nothing we would change, it gets better every time. We will definitely be back.

Amazing 2nd stay
Stunning cottage, I would love to live here. Lots in the kitchen so you don’t need to take the kitchen sink! Clean and beautiful. Good location. Love the secret garden. Children loved the mouse hole and fairy house. I love the big comfy beds and beautiful roll top tub. 2nd visit and wish to visit again next year! Sainsburys do a delivery here which is useful with kids.

The best holiday cottage ever stayed in
What a superb property, beautifully furnished, all the home comforts, including biscuit waiting for you on arrival. Large and very comfortable beds, with crisp bed linen and nice pillows. Lovely private garden with BBQ and very large seat! We would highly recommend this property to anybody. It is situated in a beautiful village with lots of lovely walks in the countryside.

Highly recommend this clean and beautiful home!
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home. The rooms were spacious, nicely decorated and very clean. I loved how there were modern features within the classic setting. The secret garden was especially lovely this time of year! The little village of Alstonefield is delightful. We will definitely return to this lovely home again sometime. We highly recommend!!

About the neighbourhood
The Peak District is renowned for the huge number and variety of walks, paths and trails for casual and serious walkers and cyclists. We shall happily list some of our favourites on request.. Sailing is available at Carsington Water (10 miles) and, of course, for the young at heart Alton Towers is also just 12 miles away. The George is just 100m from our front door. Excellent for a drink or light meal at lunchtime; casual drinking can be a little crowded in the evenings with many folk enjoying the Chef’s Michelin listed fine dining. The Watts Russell Arms is less than a mile downhill in Hope Dale. A warm, quiet pub with superb, homecooked tapas dishes. The Royal Oak in Wetton; a traditional, friendly pub with hearty food & open fire.
