Nestled in the Pyrennes mountains, our comfortable, family friendly home is located in the village of Axat in the Aude Valley. This laid back village is the perfect base for touring ( we are located on The Cathar Trail ) while hiking, cycling & water sports enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice. The house has everything you will need for a fun family holiday, with a fully equipped kitchen and plenty of room to relax on our mezzanine with its selection of books and comfortable furniture. Our large balony has a beautiful view of the mountains. Here you will find furniture & a kettle bbq for al fresco dining & relaxing. Should you happen upon a cooler evening, there is a wood burning stove with logs provided and a television & dvd player for entertainment. The local butcher sells excellent local paté & saucisson, the boulangerie opens very early in the mornings, serving you fresh croissants for breakfast. There is an a.t.m on the main street and a post office & pharmacy on the village square - this is also where the local market is held on Thursday mornings! More

A beautiful get-away!

We are just back from a fantastic week in Axat. The house was beautiful, cozy and full of rustic charm. It was ideal for the 4 of us - but could easily have catered for 2 more. We enjoyed the scenic walks on our doorstep....More

A great place to spend a week!

The house is situated in an attractive village with a river running through it. The village is surrounded by wooded hills. The gîte is very well equipped with everything you need to have an enjoyable stay, which we had. Our favourite spot was the terrace....More

About the neighbourhood
The Languedoc-Roussillon region excels at the traditional, the natural and anything to do with wine. Most of the villages here are very much working villages, usually dominated by wine-making. Both in Axat and in larger villages you will still find bakeries teeming with inexpensive and delicious breads, old fashioned butchers, restaurants and central squares, old ladies chatting and that group of men playing petanque or talking over a glass of Pastis in the local bar. It’s all here! There are lots of outdoor activities available here for the more adventurous, the river Aude is perfect for white water rafting and canyoning in the local gorges is highly recommended. There are hiking and horse riding options too.
Getting around
A car is recommended for exploring the many beautiful villages in the area. It is possible to arrange an airport pick up and everything you need in terms for food & drink is available in the village, but for a larger food shop or to visit the beach ( we are one hour from the coast ) or the ski stations ( we are one hour from Les Angles & Mijanes) you will need to hire a car. There is a very good rental site next door to Carcassonne airport, a number of companies operate from here so there is never a problem securing a booking.
