Nieu-Bethesda, Eastern Cape
Meerkat is a little gem, situated in the quaint village of Nieu Bethesda in the Eastern Cape, and has magnificent views of the Compassberg. There is just so much to see in this little village!

Meerkat is romantic and very comfortable. Guests love the bed and usually make special mention of it, and there is a big, comfortable couch plus a small table and chairs. The built-in outside grill is popular with guests who stay more than one night. They usually relax in the lovely private garden where the garden table is the perfect place for a dinner under the stars in summer or lunch under the nut trees..

The unit is walking distance from the Two Goats Deli and Brewery and the Old Mill, and a short walk up the street leads to a lane that takes you over a charming hanging bridge to the center of the village. There are a number of good restauran...

Interaction with guests
We are in the premises, just next door to Meerkat, separated by a little gate which the guests can use any time to visit us. We are available as much as possible and love to give advice about what to see and do, where you can find the best Karoo lamb or curry dishes or pizza. Some guests love to interact while others want to be left pretty much on their own - for them we leave information pamphlets in the unit .It is up to our guests to decide how much they want to see of us.

Perfect stay, offering all that you see here and more. One night is not enough. Next time we will stay at least 3 nights. Tutti is the most wonderful and considerate host, and the cottage is fantastic. Beautiful views too.

About the neighbourhood
Our village is an oasis in the Karoo - a lovely green patch in the semi-desert. You will be overwhelmed by the wideness and the blueness of the sky, the beauty of the countryside and the aroma of Karoo herbs when you walk in the countryside. It is safe to take long hikes or ride a bicycle. Some bicycles are for rent in the village. The sight of the stars at night is breathtaking and unforgettable. The village is situated in an area where pre-dinaosaurs existed and there are fossils still to be found in the river bed.The famous Owl House is well worth a visit. Athol Fugard, the American playwright, wrote many plays with Nieu-Bethesda as the backdrop. So by all means, bring along one of his plays to read. There are some good restaurants.
Getting around
You will most probably arrive in a rented vehicle. A 4x4 gives you more freedom to explore the countryside. In the middle of the Karoo you see sights either on foot, by donkey cart or in your own vehicle. Unless you befriend some of the friendly locals and they take you around or you get invited by one of the local farmers for a real South African braai (or barbeque) and get taken around on his farm. There are some bicycles for hire from one of the local businesses too. .

How to get there
Airport: Port Elizabeth Airport: 325.0 km
Google earth is possibly the best guide to get you to us. Whether you drive up from the south on the N9 or whether you drive down from the north on the N9 , there are two roads that you can take to Nieu-Bethesda.The most northern turn-off on the Owl route to Nieu-Bethesda is a dirt road. An easy 4x4 drive, not recommended for cars. The southern turn-off is on the Owl route to Nieu-Bethesda is a tar road which turns into a dirt road for the last 3km. Both roads have spectacular views just about all the way. .
