Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Average, definitely overpriced
We stayed here in April as a group of 6 people. The setting is stunning, and you really are in the middle of nowhere! Hope you don't have a wide car or visit in icy weather, however, as the entrance to the drive is narrow with an old warped cattle grid, followed immediately by a very steep hill on gravel footing. The accomodation is left open when you arrive, and the barn itself it attached to the owners next door, though we saw nor heard a peep from them all week so it really is as if you are alone. Of the four bedrooms, the majority do not have anything other than a bed in it. No bedside tables or drawers etc. The mattresses are clearly ancient, rock solid and very uncomfortable. The pillows may as well not be provided for how thin and threadbare they are. Heating is on a timer dictated by the owner and any adjustments incur an additional charge, but the timings are odd and seem to come on at random unhelpful points and leave the house either freezing or far too hot at inconvenient times. There was a grand total of 4 toilet rolls provided throughout the 3 bathrooms. Any towels used also incur a charge, and if you want fuel for the log burner - you guessed it - additional charge. The dining table technically seats 8, but at 6 people we were snug at the table, and as the barn sleeps 9 you'd expect a larger table. Two old battered leather sofas and a glorified dog bed are what you get for seating in the living room. There's an obscene amount of cobwebs around the window frames and ceilings, clearly not thoroughly cleaned. One hand soap was provided in the kitchen, and a bar soap in one bathroom (very unhygienic, unclear if it was new or shared between previous lodgers as it wasn't sealed!) Most of the window vents are broken leaving you with drafts in the wind, and the latches for the sash windows are hit and miss depending on the window. There's chips and cracks on the walls and ceilings revealing plaster beneath that haven't been repaired. There's no locks on any bathroom doors for privacy. The dishwasher is pretty useless, you have to reclean everything by hand after so after two attempts we didn't bother using it again. They did supply washing up liquid and tablets, but clearly budget ones. There is plenty of glassware, cutlery and crockery supplied, however minimal cooking utensils and pots and pans, making it difficult to cater for groups. No starting amenities it milk/tea/sugar supplied. There is a folder with information on how to use the cooker, however nothing on local walks, local area, which bin to use, recycling information etc - nothing provided. The surrounding area is beautiful with some amazing walks, though be prepared to drive for any activities. The two local pubs (around 2/3 miles away) have very poor reviews, but we didn't sample them ourselves because of these reviews. All in all, it's not a terrible place. It was clearly refurbished to a high standard some time ago, but also very clearly had nothing done to it since. But, for around £1000/week or more depending on time of year, the quality isn't good enough, and the penny pinching behaviour is really off-putting. We wouldn't choose here again, simply because you can get far more for £1000 at other locations, even within the same locality. We are leaving tomorrow and all of us have been saying how we can't wait for a decent night sleep on a comfortable mattress!

Mice!!!!
The most beautiful location with lots of character inside and outside. Very spacious, though it was only the 4 of us, and I believe 9 people would struggle with sitting down. The second night mice appeared in the living room and they seemed to be at home. They weren't afraid of people or noise etc. When we told the owner, she seemed to know about it. We caught 1 mouse but heard the running around of more. They left their droppings everywhere, even on the crockery. We had to move out, which completely ruined our first 3 days of our holiday, which was a present for my husband's 50th birthday. Beds horribly uncomfortable. Shame because from the pictures it looks like the nicest accommodation ever.

Okay
When we arrived at the barn we had been informed that it would be unlocked and we could let ourselves in. Once inside, at first glance the place seemed spotless. However, as we went to the 4 rooms we saw that there were huge spiders webs above the beds and in the bathrooms. To be honest, you would expect these to have been removed and there was far too many webs for them to have only appeared on the day of our arrival. In the living room there was also a number of webs but this we could understand as the ceilings were high. We had done out research so knew that if we used the towels provided here we would have to pay £1 for every towel that was used. With the amount we had paid to stay the 2 nights you'd expect towels to be included. As well as this, in the 3 bathrooms there was only 1 toilet roll left in each, there was 9 of us staying there! Again, the amount we had paid, you'd expect this to be supplied. There is a simple instruction folder left with instructions on how to use the oven and microwave, as well as information about the heating being on time and to contact the owner (who lives next door) should you need extra heat etc. There is an extra charge for this also. In many places we have stayed in like this in the past, the very basics have been provided such as a small carton of milk, some tea bags and sugar. Here nothing is provided- something we haven't really come across before. The living area is open plan and can just fit in 7 adults and 2 children as the kids were happy to sit on the floor etc. The kitchen has a few pots, pans and cutlery as well as a dishwasher. No instructions were provided for this so we did have to play around with it a bit. The best bit about this accommodation has to be the absolutely stunning views. The main bedrooms are down stairs and the living area is upstairs which enables you to really appreciate the views. We did a fair bit of walking during our weekend and everywhere we turned there was just the most beautiful scenery. When we had booked, we had read that there were waterfalls nearby but we never managed to find them and struggled to find anyone to ask. The owners leave you to it, which was appreciated however, maybe a small folder on the local area etc. left with the instructions folder would be helpful. Plan ahead for meal times if you are planning to eat out as the nearest pub, The Fat Lamb was very busy and is also a B&B. We waited over 5mins to be told they couldn't accomodate 9 people. We did however, find a lovely pub in Ravenstonedale called Kings Head where the food was delicious and the staff were wonderful. I have done a separate review for here. Over all, our stay at Ash Pot Barn was memorable and the actual barn itself is of a good standard, decor is minimal and rustic, the fire is a lovely feature. However, it was the lack of attention to detail that made us rate it as 3 stars.

Good potential but let down by avoidable faults
Great setting, House was warm and plenty of hot water but owners went for maximising the number of beds and didn't equip the property for a potential nine residents. for example the sitting room only had two settee's. Two of the four bedrooms lacked bedside tables and bedside lights. The dishwasher was poor and we had to frequently rinse plates. Dishwasher safe cutlery was not provided so had to be washed seperately. . There were only three items of 'oven to table' ware. We were a party of 4 so just about managed with this but it would be problematic with a larger group. We normally find stock food items [ sauces, oil, etc] left by previous visitors but not here. No tumble dryer, no airer, no clothes line. Fortunately we had good weather. We knew there was no DVD player so brought our own but we normally expect that as standard. We knew there would be no WiFi but strongly suspect that this could be wired from the owners property next door. All in all a disappointing rental from a party with a significant amount of experience of renting houses in the UK.

Shame - great potential
Fabulous location and very clean cottage with nice views and plenty of character. The boys enjoyed the woodburning stove. The plumbing in the cottage was second to none with plenty of hot water and good water pressure. However, the Dishwasher and Microwave did not work, part of the fridge door was missing and the oven dial settings had been cleaned off so it was difficult to set temperatures. Generally the property needed some maintenance with patches of damp on the walls and draughty windows. The property had a number of Woodlice and other insects both downstairs and upstairs. Downstairs the bedrooms were sparsely furnished so there were no surfaces to put clothes and things. There were no bed-side tables so everything (glasses, books, mobile phones) had to go on the stone floors that were bare throughout with the exception of a couple of rugs. Outside the hardcore track leading down was potholed and care needed to be taken when driving up to avoid bottoming the car on the stones. Also note that there is a charge to use the towels. It's a shame because the property has such potential!

In the middle of nowhere..
This was exactly what we wanted, plenty of room, warm, isolated in this wonderful part of Cumbria! Owners live next door but were very discreet, much appreciated. Lacked coat pegs for anoraks etc and perhaps a DVD player when weather bad as it was for us for a week!

Great stay at ash Pot Barn
I stayed at ash Pot Barn with 6 other ladies. We had a great time. We couldnt fault our stay in anyway. We would definatley return, especially in Summer as it has a great BBQ area overlooking the Fells, But was cosy in the winter when we went. We walked to the Fat Lamb pub which took about 1 hour 10 mins. Secluded location but perfect for relaxing and staying in, great kitchen/living area. Bedrooms spacious and everywhere very clean.

Ravenstonedale Review
We enjoyed our stay. The cottage was comfortable and well laid out. Very clean and newly decorated. Bedrooms would benefit from a little more furniture. The drive was quite steep but fine once we got used to it. Liked the open plan living area and the modern bathrooms best. Liked Spartan bedrooms least but they were clean. Scenery beautiful. Good walking straight from the door. The owners were very helpful.
