Dating from at least 1622 when it was first recorded as an Ale House and Ferry. the Dog and Duck Cottage at Plucks Gutter , is a 400 year old ferry cottage in rural East Kent which offers a safe and tranquil remote setting in the Kentish Countryside but with the added advantage of an equally remote pub just across the road...!

Great place to rest between 2 excursions. A good note about the veranda, where breakfast and dinner were some perfect moments. The pub near the cottage is top (cool, cheap and comfortable).

A lovely location that is a perfect base for touring the coast, Canterbury and stunning local countryside. Plenty of helpful tips and walk ideas provided additional ideas. The Cottage has a unique charm and everything you could need. A wonderful few days break.

About the neighbourhood
Plucks Gutter is a small hamlet in Kent, England where the Little Stour and Great Stour rivers meet. During the Middle Ages, the two rivers met the Wantsum Channel at Stourmouth, but the combined rivers now (called the River Stour downstream from Plucks Gutter) flow onward to the sea via Sandwich to Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate, leaving Plucks Gutter some six miles in a straight line and ten by river from the English Channel.

The hamlet is named after a Dutch Drainage Engineer called Ploeg, whose grave can be seen in All Saints Church, West Stourmouth. Ploeg being the Dutch for a plough, the hamlet almost certainly takes its origins from the Dutch Protestant tradition of draining marshland by creating a ploughed ditch. No doubt, the Dutchman was named after his craft.

Getting around
There is a limited Monday to Saturday Bus Service available from outside the pub serving Broadstairs, Minster, Wingham and Canterbury. Taxis are available locally and trains to most parts of Kent are available from either Birchington or Minster. There are timetables and network maps available at either the pub office and/or the cottage.

How to get there
Airport: Gatwick: 80.0 km
Railway: Minster [Kent]: 5.0 km
Ferry: Dover: 15.0 km

Just five minutes drive from the Main A299 Ramsgate to London Dual Carriageway. We are nevertheless a rural retreat. We are ideal for 'get away from it all' stays - and whilst all conveniences are within five miles, none are within walking distance with the exception of the pub.

Close to Ramsgate, Sandwich and Canterbury from where the high speed train to London takes just 59 minutes. Great cycling, walking and fishing on the Kentish River Stour. The Channel Posts are about 30 minutes away so day trips to France and/or Belgium are all achievable as day trips - we sometimes have discount vouchers for ferry crossing.

Parking for two cars is available on site.
