We rented the cottage in early May and it proved to be all that we could of wished for. With the mixed weather it was reassuring to know that there was a warm and welcoming cottage to return to. The quiet surroundings suited us and it was a pleasure to see on the first morning three deer grazing opposite. On...

Management response:

Many thanks! Glad you and your party enjoyed the cottage and its surroundings....walks....deer (3 at once - lucky you!) and found it a cosy place to return to.

We had a one week stay at Acorn cottage. Good location for southern lakes, Coniston, Windemere, Grasmere. Good sized property, with nice views and walks on the doorstep.

Management response:

As they say - location, location, location.....we've got it!! Central, and stunning. What more could you want! Glad you had a good time.

Easy enough to find (as the directions given from Christine were straightforward enough), and a delight to drive up to on the single track road. The scenery is absolutely stunning. What is not so much of a delight is when you meet another car coming the other way. We were a two car party which was interesting to say the...

Management response:

Really sorry you didn't realise that we prefer pets to be kept downstairs. I'll amend the web details. Glad you managed to have a good time though!

About the neighbourhood
Acorn Cottage is situated in the heart of the old slate mining area. A disused quarry is a short walk from the door with good rock climbing/abseiling to be had. Further mines can be explored locally - details of which can be found on our bookshelves!

Coniston is 3.5 miles by road, Elterwater is 2.75 miles by path and 7 miles by road. Ambleside is 8 miles away and Grasmere 8.5. The famous Tarn Hows is 1.75 miles by road.

We are lucky enough to have 3 very well known pubs to hand - The Drunken Duck (and its sister cafe, Chesters by the river, at Skelwith Bridge - famous for its large scones!), The Three Shires and The Britannia Inn. Coniston also has a fine selection of pubs and local ales for you to tick off your list (The Sun Inn is our favourite).

Coniston hosts walkin...
