Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Wonderful cosy retreat
I can't really add much to the other 5-star reviews - it really was a gorgeous (and exceptionally clean!) place to stay. The weather was very changeable, but the cottage is so cosy (but spacious) and beautifully appointed and with great views, it was nice to stay in and wait out the rain. It's just a five minute walk to the gorge /restaurants up the lane and down a pedestrian path, so very good location. I did think when booking it might be a bit on the pricey side, but when we got there and saw the quality of the cottage and everything in it, it seemed perfectly good value! Thanks for a wonderful stay.

I agree with them!
Looking at earlier reviews I can see that all of the superlatives haves been used so I’ll just say that I agree with the previous 5 star reviews. The cottage is comfortable, clean, warm, well equipped and in a superb location. The owners are friendly and live next door but are not intrusive. All in all. Superb!

5* cottage!
Just returned from a 5 day stay at Gorge View Cottage and can not recommend it enough. The cottage has everything you could want and more. Huw and Mary have put lots of maps and local information for you to use in the cottage, which were invaluable for all the walking we did. They also lent us their bikes so that we could ride The Strawberry Line, much recommended. Their garden is so beautiful, tranquil and full of wildlife. It was lovely to sit outside and watch the enormous amount of birds feeding every morning in their garden. The view of the Gorge from the cottage is exceptional. A 5* holiday rental. we will definitely go back.

Thanks for this lovely review, Sue. We're so glad you enjoyed it and got so much out of your time here. We'll look forward to seeing you here again sometime. Remember if you plan on Blagdon next time to maybe check-out (and book) the Yeo Valley Canteen. Open for breakfast and Lunch weekdays, but you can also pop-in (unbooked) for a coffee and cake mornings and afternoons. Huw & Mary

Perfect for EV road trip!
We stayed only two nights but we just had to post a glowing review. The cottage is comfortable; the hosts are the perfect combination of being there and very friendly without interfering or being fussy; the view of the gorge is tremendous; and for ev owners, the security of a reliable working overnight charge is wonderful, given the terrible state of public charging infrastructure. Top marks!

Thanks for the lovely review. We are starting to get more guests choosing us for EV charging and we love to be helping pioneer destination charging. We trust the onward road trip is proving both enjoyable and low (charge) anxious 🙂

Beautiful cottage, comfortable and warm with excellent facilities
We spent 5 nights at Gorge View Cottage in March, we were welcomed by Huw who made us feel very welcome. The cottage is spotless, warm and comfortable, perfect for 2! Comfy bed, and waking to the dawn chorus was a treat. The location is very good for exploring the area, we went to Wells, Bath and Glastonbury, all an easy drive. There is fabulous walking and the cottage has lots of maps and information. We found 2 excellent restaurants in Cheddar- La Rocco and Lao Thai. Highly recommended break and cottage!

Thanks for the lovely review Fleur. SO pleased you had a good time here. We also love that dawn chorus and also try and have our window slightly open overnight to hear all the birds get going ... this year including an exuberant Robin who seems to perch just outside and kicks off before we're even aware of the light starting to grow. Thanks for the feedback both of you. It's nice that even at this time of year the cottage is a cosy place, and we also love that the view to the gorge and the trees on the hills changes day to day and often hour to hour. Hope to see you again. Huw & Mary

About the neighbourhood
Cheddar nestles on the sunny southern slopes of the lovely Mendip Hills, a British Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). A small village of just 5,000 Cheddar is famous for the natural beauty of the gorge, the limestone caves beneath, the birthplace of Cheddar cheese, and the strawberries the area produces. It lies 20 miles south of the historic city of Bristol one of England's great cities, dominated by the "floating" harbour designed by Brunel in the 1800s and with buildings going back to the 1600s. Nearby is the beautiful city of Bath famous for it Georgian architecture and the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite their proximity to these lovely cities the area is very rural. Apart from the hills with their walks and nature reserves, villages and pubs, there are also the flat Somerset Levels - reclaimed from sea and marsh centuries ago: today's coast is just 10 miles away. Within 15 minutes drive you can be in the picturesque market city of Wells (England's smallest city) with its glorious cathedral, Bishop's Palace, market square and medieval buildings. Ten minutes more and you are in Glastonbury home to the mystical Tor, the famous festival, historic abbey grounds, and many alternative shops and cafes. And further afield are national parks like Exmoor, with England's south coast just over an hour and half's drive. Cheddar is easily reached by train (mainline to Bristol or Weston-Super-Mare) or coach or even plane to the International Airport just 20 minute away. If you are driving it is a simple 10 mile drive from the M5 motorway exit. To reward the more sustainable guests we offer a discount to those coming by foot, bike or public transport. Cheddar is on the National Cycle Network (path #26) known as the Strawberry Line - almost entirely traffic free from Yatton using the the old rural trail track, and one day on to Wells. National Cycle Route #3 from Bristol runs across the Mendips coming close to the top of the gorge.
Getting around
Lots of good walking from the cottage door up on to the Mendips or out on to the Levels. We have to good bikes we lend to guests - good for (e.g.) a cycle along the Strawberry Line (old rail path). Buses service Wells (12km) and Weston-Super-Mare (21km). By car there are lots of great places, rural and city, in very easy reach.

How to get there
We're pretty easy to find given that we're so close to Cheddar Gorge which is signposted from a long way out (look for the brown tourist location signs). Once near the start of the gorge area in Cheddar, at the TweenTown (Riverside Inn) roundabout, head for the gorge, but immediately turn left in to Birch Hill. The Cheddar Fish Bar is on your right as you proceed up a short narrow rise and then it opens out a little. Gorge View house is the second bigger house on the left. Buses stop near the roundabout (inc. from trains in Weston-s-M, service 126). The airport is 20 minutes drive away or by taxi.
