Flowers, candles and other special touches make you feel instantly at home and a phone line and free wi-fi means you can keep in touch with the outside world if you choose to! The cottage has about an acre of wild garden of heather and trees, and is situated beside a very minor road at the head of the Pass of Inverfarigaig, (part of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its flora) just a mile and a half from the southern shores of Loch Ness. Privacy is assured, as the nearest house is about 300 metres away, and 50 metres down the road a forest track links into a network of paths through Farigaig forest - ideal for a walk with your dog. The cottage has two bedrooms (one double , one twin), a bathroom with wc, washbasin and bath with shower over it, kitchen, utility, lounge and sunroom. Linens and towels are provided The partially enclosed verandah offers wonderful open views to the hill on the northern side of Loch Ness - Mealfuarvonie (Gaelic for the rounded hill of the cold hollow.) This sun room invites you to sit back and relax with a book and a 'dram', or perhaps enjoy listening to some traditional Scottish music. On clear and frosty winter nights you may be lucky enough to have a seat with a grandstand view of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. Centrally situated for touring, Cairngorm National Park, Fort William and Glencoe, Skye and the white sand beaches of the north-west are all within easy reach – or you may prefer to relax locally, visit the Falls of Foyers, try some Nessie spotting, dolphin watching on the Moray Firth, or go walking, swimming or birdwatching. The RSPB have a hide nearby, where you may see Slavonian Grebes, or you could try your hand at trout fishing with a local guide, or relax with some complementary therapy. Inverness is a half hour's drive, for some retail therapy, and local Hotels provide good food if you don't feel like cooking. From the visitors book: 'The quietest, most peaceful place we've ever been. It's like being in another world. Can't wait to come back.' 'Here for the 3rd time. Lovely and peaceful - great place to recharge your batteries.' 'We've done what we set out to do - relaxed and read a book or two. Quiet walks, drank some wine - sat out on the porch when the weather was fine. Sang some songs, fished some streams; life here is exactly what it seems - peaceful and calm in every way. Many thank yous Janet, we've enjoyed our stay! Many of our guests return time and time again and become good friends - we hope we may also say to you - 'Ceud Mile Failte!' ( a hundred thousand welcomes) to Rowan Cottage.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Bliss
A beautiful location, a cosy well equiped, gorgeous property in a secluded spot near Loch Ness. Did not want to leave. A true break away from the stresses of life and a reminder of times gone by. Would not hesitate to go back.

Perfect Highlands family hideaway
Gorgeous surroundings, well equipped traditional cottage with everything a family could need and more. My 10 yr old son loved exploring the garden and spotting the deer, he read a lot of the books on offer, played games etc. We were lucky to get hot sunshine for our first few days, so enjoyed a swim in Loch Ness, and lounging with books on the cottage porch - what an AMAZING view from the front door - I miss the view the most! The conservatory was ideal for morning coffee, rainy afternoon boardgames and watching the landscape. We hardly had the TV on but did enjoy a handful of family movies from the good variety of DVDs over the week we were there, and having freeview was a nice option for a rainy day to entertain my son whilst we could sit elsewhere and read or draw. Particularly enjoyed a 2-hour boat trip across Loch Ness, but glorious sunshine helped! Lovely forest walks near the cottage, fantastic remote location - just what we needed to get away from technology and city life for a week that went by all too fast!

Deer Garden
A reasonably priced cottage in an unreasonably beautiful setting. Friendly and helpful host who also respects guests privacy. Amazing view and a giant garden (which was visited by a deer). Loch Ness is a short drive down the exciting local roads and there are so many things to see. We particularly loved the shingle beach at Loch Ness and the dolphins. We were with our 19 year old son 13 year old daughter and 2 year old Doodle. We were all very impressed AND to my knowledge not a single midge!?!

Little bit of paradise
This was a perfect escape for us. The cottage is warm and cosy and in such a beautiful location. Janet and Alex were very helpful and made us feel very much at home. We were welcomed with flowers, shortbread and a wee dram each of whisky. Which was a lovely touch. Don’t expect ultramodern as you will be disappointed but if traditional, homely, and cosy in a peaceful location is for you then we can certainly recommend this little piece of heaven.

lovely quiet location
Rowan cottage this wee cottage lies just out side of the small village of Errogie about 16 miles from Fort Augustus in a secluded wooded area with stunning view from the porch when we first arrived and entered the cottage we were met by a small dram of whiskey and some shortbread ,we were asked to contact Janet when we arrived and Janet arrived around 20 min later and we had a we chat and all was explained on everything about the cottage Janet even told us of all the local amenities that were available to us and were also inside the small blue folders which were left in the cottage , we also informed that we could use the Phone that was there and if there was any problems to contact Janet we had a small problem on the last morning but her Husband Alex came right away and explained that the whole village was affected I would definitely recommend this small cottage to anyone specially if you like to hike

Thank you for your review - we are so glad you enjoyed your stay! It was unfortunate that there was a power cut on your last morning, as a tree had come down on the line, and we were all cut off! These things can happen in a rural area, but thankfully not too often! Best wishes Janet

Lovely cottage in beautiful location
The cottage was great, with an interesting history, and set in a gorgeous location. We really loved staying here. The owners Janet & Alex were lovely too and supplied plenty of information about the local area and things to do. Would highly recommend a stay here :)

A cosy old cottage with all the amenities, in beautiful, serene surroundings.
First things first - as well as a fully equipped kitchen (minus dishwasher) you modern folk can relax in the knowledge that Rowan Cottage has a surprisingly decent Broadband connection (for being pretty isolated), and freesat. Lovely bit of land with a gorgeous view that sprawls across to the western hills across Loch Ness. Just being in the cottage, the veranda, or in the garden was very relaxing, and there is a variety of wildlife likely to visit during your stay. Great base for exploring the area - we will be back! The only potential negative I'd mention (although it didn't effect us) was that the twin bed room has no door, only a curtain.

Timeless oasis
Rowan cottage is the most relaxing and welcoming cottage. We loved our stay, with lovely local walks, monopoly with our children in the covered verandah on the odd rainy afternoon and relaxing on the open veranda, soaking up the stunning views, on sunlit evenings. We had a wonderful time and hope to be back soon! Thanks Janet and Rowan Cottage!

A local loch has a small sandy beach (only known to locals!) with good, safe swimming, and there is a shop, Post Office and cafe at Foyers just 4 miles away. - great for a coffee or lunch after visiting the Falls of Foyers.
