About the neighbourhood
Ayr is a popular seaside resort in south Ayrshire, 37 miles south west of Glasgow, complete with charming sea front, leafy suburbs and a range of places to stay. Ayr has a fantastic esplanade with a long sandy beach which is perfect for walking. There are plenty of parking spaces on either side of the main road that runs parallel with the beach. Ayr Racecourse, runs many Flat and National Hunt meetings throughout the year and is particularly famous as the venue of the Scottish Grand National, the Ayrshire Handicap and the Ayr Gold Cup. Ayr is well located for access to the many golf courses situated north and south of the town. Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns, was born in Alloway, on the outskirts of the town.
Getting around
A car isn't always neccesary, depending on how you want to spend your time. There are good public transport links to other main towns and Glasgow, both by bus and train. Locally, taxis are good value, and there are always many to choose from. The local bus station has excursions to interesting places in the area. With a car you can see a lot more of the outlying attractions, and if you don't bring your own there are good and reasonably priced car hire companies in the town.
