Home from Home!
A wonderful place to stay. Kieran is an excellent host. House was cosy and warm when we arrived and he had provided welcome gifts which were much appreciated. A central location. Lots of space to walk and enjoy nature but very close to shops and local entertainment. Looking forward to our next trip.

Perfect
Stayed 1st of September to 15th of September. 2 excellent weeks!!!! We arrived at the cottage at 12.30 in the morning and Kieran the perfect host was waiting for us to arrive along with apple pie, wine, apple cider and freshly cut flowers. Tymon cottage has an abundance of character and charm and many individual perfect touches. Please don’t change it !!! The walks along the river at the side of the cottage with our two very happy pooches was perfect and they to have enjoyed every minute at the cottage. The fishing was excellent and i caught many trout and lots of childhood roach. Thank you Kieran for the perfect stay and we will be seeing you soon. John, Carol, Gracie and Barney. x x x x

Perfect cottage in a perfect place
Absolutely love this place, I've been twice now and have booked a third time! Kieran is brilliant and his cottage is the best place to relax and explore. We done a good part of the wild Atlantic way and it was gorgeous! Thank you Kieran for the welcome pack, the apple pie, wine and apple juice went down a treat. I took my wee pug Bob with us this time and he loved every minute, especially when I took him on the river walk! He was sad to leave haha. Cannot recommend enough

A truly special, wonderful 'home place', beautifully kept with love, rich in history.
My Finnish wife normally selects where we will stay on holiday, is very particular in her choices and always selects somewhere memorable. Even though we have stayed in multiple cottages in Britain, Ireland and Finland over the years we have never stayed before in a place quite like James Tymon Cottage. It’s a tranquil rural setting, with beautiful grounds, kept scrupulously clean, is superbly equipped, with its’ period character maintained and enhanced. This cottage is not kept just as a holiday letting but instead is kept as a 'home place', a property that has been in the family for generations and is looked after and protected with a lot of effort and great love. Gurteen is not a big village, but it has all you might need. It’s not your typical tourist spot and the people are very friendly. The cottage is a little outside the village but still within walking distance. It is very well placed for excursions to Sligo, Ben Bulben and the coastal beaches. It's hard to know where to start with describing the cottage but I am going to start with the hearty and friendly welcome from the owner, in person and not delegated to someone else. As we arrived, he and his brother were just finishing up on their weekly grounds maintenance. Our fridge had been stocked with lovely surprises and there was a homemade apple pie for us, just like my mother used to make, real Irish Mammy style. Think about a two-floor period cottage, beautifully painted, set in grounds with mature trees and a lovely river. Then imagine what it might be like to have mown grass pathways that lead you down by the river and around the lovely woodlands with lovely large specimen trees. Then be surprised to come across an unexpected picnic bench by the river or even a coffee table strategically set to look out on the meadow. A place for thought and tranquillity where in the distance you can still see and hear the sounds of real working rural Ireland. There are house martins nesting under the eaves and if you are quiet and still you can see amazing sights. The absence of light pollution allows stunning views of the night sky. Beautifully kept barns, plentifully stocked with turf and firewood, are right outside. Other outdoor seating has been strategically placed around the cottage to catch the sun at different times of the day with opportunities for morning coffee, afternoon tea or even a nice glass of wine in the evening. Our dog was very welcome and just loved his stay, with the freedom to explore safely. Inside I got to wondering how it was possible to keep such a busy place so wonderfully and spotlessly clean. To say the cottage is well equipped is a major understatement. Put simply, this is the best equipped cottage I have ever had the privilege to stay in. It's not a case of any old thing, all items, from crockery, to furniture, right down to the tableware, were selected for their fit with the cottage. The bedrooms were just lovely, and I especially liked the raised bed which, reminded me of my grandmother's, with beautiful bed linen, all totally in keeping with character of the cottage. There is a sense of real history here, as you will see on the walls of the cottage. Discover why the cottage is named for James Tymon, Private First Class, raised here in this house, emigrated to the USA and who died of his wounds in the Great War serving his new country, the USA. All of which I discovered with our American granddaughter on Independence Day, a very special experience. My summary is that this is a truly wonderful cottage and location. We were lucky to secure our booking, a cancellation due to international C19 travel restrictions. I suggest booking early, as this cottage is very much in demand, some bookings are for two years ahead and there are multiple annual repeat bookings. I feel very fortunate to have been able to experience the delights of James Tymon Cottage. We truly appreciate all that was done for us. Thank You to KR. Maurice.

excellent as usual.
James Tymon Cottage never disappoints, Kieran always has the place spotless and leaves some goodies that we enjoy. Always a pleasure to return, quiet, peaceful and just the perfect place to relax. A bit too much water in the river this time to fish but we found plenty of other things to do. Lots of great beaches nearby and Lough Key is a great place to go.

Excellent
The beautiful home we booked is just fantastic. It is in excellent condition and the owner takes good care of it. When you arrive there are lots of little details that make it so welcoming. For example, an apple tart and a delicious bottle of white wine in the fridge. The surrounding area is very accessible and very beautiful. In addition,it is also well maintained. The local village, Gorteen, has a Centra that makes fresh croissants every morning.I have never experienced anything as good as this before.

excellent place to stay.
James Tymon is the best self catering accommodation we have stayed at. The house is always spotless and has everything you need for a great stay, the grounds are fantastic and there is a river for a bit of fishing. Kieran the owner is always happy to see you and leaves a few treats in the kitchen. Lough Key Forest Park is only a 30 min drive and is great for kids and grown ups. The Coach House Hotel in Ballymote is great for food and does a good pint of Guinness. Give it a try you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to return.

One of the best places we've ever stayed in Ireland
We've stayed in different self-catering accommodation for about 40 years and can't remember ever staying in a property so loved by its owner and ALL visitors (many of whom return multiple times - a good sign in itself). We're happy to add our names to this list. The property is exactly as described - walks through the 30 acres of grounds with a small river flowing through it. Very comfortable to stay in. Great area to tour around. Atlantic coast about 30 mins drive away. Thanks so much to Kieran for his hard work and attention to detail making this such a great place for a holiday.

Pure relaxation excellent!
This was our first visit and it won't be the last !. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and as all have said before Kieran is a great host and a gentleman wow, the apple pie! We particularly enjoyed sitting in the fuel barn sitting below the swallows with a few glasses of red and watching the the horseshoe bats with there young out for there nightly feed around 10.30pm.We also captured on video a pine Martin who was checking the bins out in the fuel barn.We can also recommend the beach bar at Aughris Head next to Dunmoran Strand only 40kms away the seafood is superb. The cottage is home from home with excellent facilities and all you could need in the kitchen to make excellent meals ,the BBQ was spotless and used regularly .The beds what can I say the most comfortable we have slept on ,the bathroom was excellent with a top quality shower and sanitary wear .Everything is in the detail with Kieran even down to an up to date tv guide .The gardens and fields are great to walk around especially the river walk which the dogs really loved running in and out of.The local supermarket in gurteen was very good everything you could need excellent quality meats and vegetables with a good selection of wines and spirits at very reasonable prices.See you next year !! Many Thanks and Best Wishes Kieran Chris Andrea ( Poppy and Daisy)

Thank you for such a considered and thoughtful review. I am so pleased you enjoyed the cottage and that Poppy and Daisy enjoyed the pathways on the land. It was incredible seeing the elusive pine martin on your video. I must visit the beach bar you recommended on Dunmoran strand. Sounds like a hidden gem. Looking forward to seeing you both next year and who knows what other creatures will show up on your night camera. All the best till then. Kieran.

About the neighbourhood
James Tymon cottage stands on 30 acres of farmland by the bank of the Owenmore river at Moydough,Gurteen, Co Sligo, Ireland. The cottage has many protected and prepared walks radiating out from the house. So why not take a stroll on your own private grounds along by the river, up through the trees to the old horse chestnut or back through the characterful wrought iron gate on an oak lined greenway to the meadows beyond. The village of Gurteen is just 1km away on a quiet rural road. It has a well earned reputation for its traditional Irish music scene which can be sampled in the local pubs particularly The Roisin Dubh. The village has an excellent supermarket which is open every day, a pharmacy, petrol station post office and a hardware store. As our guests tell us the cottage is a great base from which to explore the whole region and which to return to.
