Holiday Rental House
A boutique, newly-renovated holiday cottage nestled in the village of Llangynidr, in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The cottage Pontganol Cottage is nearly 200 years old and packed with charm. It sits in a large garden, with off street parking for two cars, a vegetable plot (guests are free to help themselves to whatever is in season) a summer house, lockable bike storage, an apple tree and various places to sit and relax. Sometimes, there's also a vintage tractor (belonging to a neighbour) too! What you get: Inside, the cosy cottage offers flexible accommodation over two floors - downstairs there's a new, fully-fitted and fully-equipped solid wood kitchen/diner with oak worktops and induction hob, oven, espresso machine, dishwasher and fridge freezer. What you get: Inside, the cosy cottage offers flexible accommodation over two floors - downstairs there's a new, fully-fitted and fully-equipped solid wood kitchen/diner with oak worktops and induction hob, oven, espresso machine, dishwasher and fridge freezer. On the other side of the room, there's a farmhouse style table that seats 6 next to a lantern-filled fireplace. There's also zoned, dimmable LED lighting, so you can match the lighting to your mood, and whether you're making dinner for six or having a cosy meal for two, you should have everything you need. In the quarry-tiled living room there's a new flatscreen TV with Freeview and Amazon Fire TV, a DVD player and two cosy sofas with plenty of snuggly throws, and a woodburner with a supply of logs. Oh, and an absolutely enormous furry beanbag too. There are also bookshelves with a selection of books, local walking ideas, maps, and stargazing, bug hunting and birdspotting guides. Inside the sideboard there are board games, playing cards, and all sorts of games, so even if the weather is against you, boredom shouldn't be an option. Next to the living room is a separate snug, in a knocked-through former police cell, offering a futon (which converts to a double bed if required) and a tv/games console (Wii) to keep the kids out of the way. There's also a small utility/boot room, with washer/dryer, microwave and storage for wet boots (it does rain a bit in Wales!). Upstairs are the two bedrooms, decorated in neutral, contemporary colours. The master bedroom has a metal-framed king-size bed and the second bedroom holds a small double. All bedding is high thread count Egyptian cotton, and the duvets are goose down (though hollow fibre ones are also available if you prefer). The generous landing is home to a single daybed offering further sleeping flexibility, or just another place to curl up with a good book and chill out. The panelled bathroom has a roll-top bath with ball and claw feet and handheld shower. There's also heated towel radiator, a separate freestanding shower, and Victorian-style sanitary ware. You can relax in the bath and watch the stars from the Velux window. The cottage sits in the Brecon Beacons International Dark Sky Reserve, so the stars are simply stunning. There is free wifi throughout the cottage. Well behaved dogs (up to a maximum number of two in any party) are welcome, but are not allowed upstairs or on the furniture. The village Llangynidr village has two pubs, one just up the road from the cottage (The Red Lion), the other less than a mile away (The Coach and Horses). There's a pretty church near the cottage, and the local shop is 0.7 miles away. The Brecon and Monmouth canal runs less than a half a mile from the cottage door, offering plenty of relaxed walks. Slightly further on from the canal is the beautiful River Usk, and the stunning Llangynidr mountain rises behind the cottage, with delightful views of Llangorse Lake and further afield on a clear day. There are walks all around, but for those who prefer it, there's shopping in Crickhowell, and the cottage is also close to Abergavenny, Usk, Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, the book town. For more high adrenaline activities, there's hangliding, paragliding and boating on Llangorse Lake. There are also bike and horse trails. The Green Man festival is held just down the road on the Glanusk estate in August. About the neighbourhood
Crickhowell is a beautiful little market town, very close to Llangynidr, accessed via a gorgeous 17th century arched stone bridge and is well worth pottering around, with its mix of interesting independent shops. The cottage is also close to the towns of Abergavenny, Talybont and Brecon, which are all well worth a visit. But it's not really the towns that will stand out - it's the views. The Brecon Beacons loom large over the town, and there are walks throughout the area from the cottage door, whether its mountains, rivers or canal scenery that takes your fancy. The area is well served for explorers and those who like to eat out with quaint pubs, gastropubs and restaurants in spectacular settings. Those definitely worth a trip if you're a bit of a foodie are Matt Tebutt's The Foxhunter...
Getting around
Having a car is recommended, although Abergavenny is the nearest train station (connecting trains to Wales and England beyond) and a local bus (Stagecoach 43 Brecon-Abergavenny) stops on the main round around the corner from the cottage. There is another train station in Ebbw Vale for services to Cardiff.
