Bergerac, Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

We had a really enjoyable and relaxing holiday in the beautiful tranquil setting of La Bidonne (although the local spelling seems to be with one 'n'?).The house itself far exceeded our expectation with the interior being far more spacious than the photographs had suggested and...More

I am glad you all had a great time. The spelling does seem to vary depending on which map or signpost you look at!

Family had a great two weeks stay. The pool was awesome as bigger than most private ones so children and "big kids" are happily occupied all day. Big bedrooms and comfortable double height salon to relax in the evenings (although with the views you'll find...More

Everything about La Bidonne is restful. We stopped off here on our way driving from Spain to northern France and barely left the premises! It has everything you need - beautifully comfy beds, sofas in the huge main lounge to snuggle up on, a big...More

About the neighbourhood
There are a number of local walks - Saussignac, for example, takes 10 to 15 minutes along an old Roman road through the vines. The beautiful Chateau in Gageac is 10 minutes’ walk and is open in the summer to look around.
This part of France is a haven for wild birds, from great buzzards to golden orioles, and at the right time of year the migration of thousands of storks overhead.
The fields around the house are full of wild flowers, orchids and butterflies, and, at night, glow-worms. The area is very popular with cyclists as there are lots of quiet roads. There are also popular 1 to 3 day canoeing trips down the Dordogne with camping provided. Golf at Chateau de Vigiers is also few minutes drive away.
Getting around
Outside of Saussignac (a short walk away) the best way to see the local area is either by car or bicycle. Both Bergerac and St Foy la Grande are a 15 min drive or you can take the local train to both from Gardonne which is 3kms from the house. Likewise Duras and Emyet are a 30 min drive.
Car advised
How to get there
Airport: Bergerac: 15.0 km
Railway: Gardonne: 3.0 km
Ferry: Bordeaux: 100.0 km
By air: The nearest airport is Bergerac some 20 minutes away from which Ryanair and Flybe operate as well as internal French flights. Cars are available at the airport but early booking is recommended. Taxis are also at the airport. Bordeaux Airport is about an hour and a half by road.

By car: Calais takes about 8 hours and St Malo about 6 hours, both on good motorways.

By Train: The TGV train runs to Libourne from Paris and there is a good regular local train from Libourne to Gardonne, a small local village 5 minutes away.
