Interaction with guests
I live in the UK and have owned my beautiful home in Ortigia since 2013. I have a very good friend whom I met there in 2014 and she looks after my guests, meets and greets, and gives them general information about the apartment and area. There is also a book in the apartment with all the information they would require. Lynette also looks after my guests as she can be contacted easily to assist if there are any issues or my guests need any help. Lynette's contact numbers are given out on booking my apartment and you can call and speak to her before your arrival.

Ortigia is a lovely place and the apartment puts you within easy walking distance of all the attractions, restaurants, cafes, market, shops and the local seaside platform. It's a relatively quiet spot though there is a steady stream of traffic until quite late (after all...More

Great place to stay. Super location, very comfortable with all mod cons. Would definitely stay here again if we came to Syracuse.

We stayed August/September, 2014. The apartment is in a brilliant location, it has the best sea views and the sunrise each morning was spectacular. It is only a few minutes walk to Archimedes Square and the Duomo. It is in a safe location (all of...More

About the neighbourhood
Ortigia is around one square mile, and its often been said a car is a hindrance there. There are tiny narrow alleyways and roads, where you can meander and find little coffee shops or artefacts for sale. There is the amazing daily fish market just around the corner. Do not eat breakfast, you will be tempted by samples of local cheeses, hams and even wine. There is also a market selling clothes, hats and jewellery and as you walk down Corso Matteotti there are designer shops and fine jewellery shops too. There is a fabulous puppet theatre and of course the magnificent Piazza Duomo. The Archeological Park is a good walk away off the island, but worth the visit.
Getting around
As mentioned the easiest way is to walk around Ortigia. There are both Interbus and trains from Siracusa Train Station and the Interbus Station which is adjacent. From either you can travel to Catania, Taormina, Palermo and also some of the popular places i.e. the Outlet Factory Centre (designer clothes) or Piazza Armerina (a Roman Villa with amazing mosaics). Taxis are available by the Tempio di Apollo but we have a taxi contact for our guests. There are also local buses.
Car not needed
How to get there
Airport: Catania Airport: 65.0 km
Railway: Siracusa (walking 1.5km): 2.0 km
There are two direct flights from London (Gatwick) to Catania, British Airways and Easyjet. There are flights from Heathrow via Milan or Rome to Catania and Ryanair flys into Palermo. There are ferries from Genoa and Rome to Palermo and there is always the possibility of driving all the way through Italy and cross over the Messina straight near Taormina. The drive from Palermo takes you straight through the centre of Sicily through magnificent mountains passing Enna and eventually Mount Etna comes into view. The roads are good and it takes approximately 3 hours to drive from Palermo dependant upon traffic in the city centre. There is also Interbus from Palermo Centrale to Siracusa train station.
