The apartment is located near the main ring road which runs around the historic centre of Florence on what was once the perimeter walls of the old city. The whole area of piazza Donatello and the surrounding area is full of artists and artisans studios. Back in 1874 a real neighbourhood of artisan studios and workshops was formed and in 1949 the Donatello Group was created, which every year in June in the gardens of the square organizes an exhibition showing their work to the community. The lovely Villa Donatello overlooks the square and is now home to a private clinic, and the main lobby of the Giardino della Gherardesca, now owned by a large luxury hotel. Piazza Donatello is still very close to the historical centre and in particular the area known as Santa Croce. In the area you can enjoy the largest selection of boutique shops, bars and typical restaurants and pizzerias within the city. Florence city centre is a ZTL zone which means a “limited traffic zone” and therefore special rules apply to when you can enter this area. This particular apartment is in fact located within the ZTL zone so this means that if you are thinking of coming to Florence by car and wish to drive around and park, then you will need to pay special attention to the road signs, CCTV cameras and access cameras (they will show either a red/green light) in order to avoid receiving fines. Guests who need to travel within the ZTL zone by car to reach their apartment are advised to contact one of the private garages in the centre (the one nearest the apartment you are staying in) and obtain a temporary access permit. Upon arrival at the garage, guests must specify they need access for the ZTL and the garage will then note the vehicle’s number plate and forward it to the appropriate police headquarters.
