About the neighbourhood
To the north of the "Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara" is the Príncipe Real neighborhood, essentially an extension of Bairro Alto, with a pleasant square and a leafy garden. In the center of the square is coffee and some exotic trees, including a hundred year old cedar that resembles a giant umbrella, all surrounded by colorful 19th century mansions. Known for its antique shops, gardens, belvederes and a growing gay population, Prince Royal is emerging as an interesting shopping destination due to a growing number of designer outlets. It remains mainly a residential neighborhood known for two of the city's quieter squares, the Royal Prince and the Flowers, and its palaces.
Getting around
It is attracting ever younger residents and meaningful restoration of older buildings, while retaining their charm as it progresses. A vitality in the shops and streets contrasts well with the antiques and preserved facades of the buildings. New families are filling parks and public gardens, entrepreneurs are opening up unique shops, urban crafts are crowding shop windows and fans of terraces and restaurants offer the latest trends for a cosmopolitan combination.
