I am glad you enjoyed the area. About the security if you have some cares, as you did, you don`t have problems. Lisbon is safe (not completely). As a host I do my best to advice my guests to have some cares.

About the neighbourhood
Located in the heart of the city, near the Casa dos Bicos (one minute on foot), former home of Afonso de Albuquerque, first viceroy of Portuguese India, which today houses the José Saramago Fundation, dedicated to the 1998 Nobel laureate. You are also just three minutes on foot to Praça do Comércio, the grand 18th-century square that symbolises the absolutist power of Dom José, built when the Marquês de Pombal, was prime minister and enlightened despot. And just three minutes' walk north are the 12th-century Cathedral (Sé), the ruins of the Roman Theatre, and medieval Alfama. Ten minutes further on and you reach the Castle of São Jorge, with its panoramic view of Lisbon. This is just one of the many different views you can enjoy in this area: you can also see the city from Graça, from Senh...
Getting around
There is plenty of public transport on hand: the characterful no.28 tram, the no.15 tram, the metro, buses and a boat station where you can catch a ferry across river. If you want to visit Estoril, Cascais (from Cais do Sodré) or Sintra (from Rossio), the train stations are also within walking distance (10 minutes). Santa Apolónia station, terminal for long-distance services to northern Portugal, is a similar distance away.
