About the neighbourhood
The Funchal Area
The city of Funchal has many leisure activities to offer. You can visit its magnificent gardens, walk through its picturesque streets and plazas with Portuguese cobblestone pavements or simply stop and relax at one of the street cafes in the city center. The settlement of the island began more than five centuries ago in the traditional neighbourhood, colourful Santa Maria, where the street of the same name, built in 1430, is the oldest street of the city. Currently Santa Maria Maior has diverse tourist attractions with hotels of excellence and restaurants ranging from the typical Madeiran cuisine to international cuisine restaurants. The narrow streets and the restored façades of the old buildings invite us to take a walk to the traditional Farmers market.
