Stunning property
Wow what a stunning property set in fabulous grounds overlooking olive groves and mature gardens. If peace and tranquility is what you need then this has to be the place for you to stay. The property is owned by a lovely couple who would ensure that your stay would be unforgettable one and one that would draw you back again and again. Their property has two 1st floor apartments in their property. Each apartments is tastefully decorated extremely comfortable and spotless and each apartment has 2 private balconies the main balconies looking over the stunning cretan countryside with private access to each apartment. The apartments have a bedroom 2 BALCONIES, shower room, dining area and fully equipped kitchen and are available all year round. There is a local kafenon within walking distance and the local beaches, restaurants and bars approximately 2/3k away. Would I recommend a stay here - most definitely without any hesitation at all. Enjoy

A holiday at this stunning location is a really wonderful experience
This spacious apartment enjoys stunning views across the Cretan countryside.The proprietors,Sean and Helen,are a warm and welcoming couple who have created a lovely home set in a beautiful garden.Both are involved in the life of the local community,so we had the experience of seeing loggerhead turtle conservation work at a local beach, enjoyed a local walk through olive groves with Sean and his dog and he also gave us an interesting guided tour of World War 2 Battle of Crete sites. Beaches and tavernas are close by. We think Arete is a very special place to stay.

!!Το εξαιρετικό είναι απλά λίγο!!
Μείναμε σε αυτό το υπέροχο διαμέρισμα για 10 μέρες κατά την περίοδο του Αυγούστου. Ο Sean και η Helen είναι από τους καλύτερους οικοδεσπότες που έχουμε ποτέ συναντήσει,πολύ φιλόξενοι, ευχάριστοι με χιούμορ και πρόθυμοι να εξυπηρετήσουν ανα πάσα στιγμή. Αφού μας υποδέχθηκαν στις 12 η ώρα το βραδυ έχοντας κάνει κράτηση στις 10 η Helen είχε ετοιμάσει το δωμάτιο και ο Sean κατέβηκε να κουβαλήσει τα πράγματα μας από το αυτοκίνητο. Μας είπαν να μη διστάσουμε να τους ενημερώσουμε για οτιδήποτε χρειαστούμε οποιαδήποτε ώρα.μας δίνανε πληροφορίες για το που να πάμε να φάμε,που να πάμε για μπάνιο και γενικότερα όλα τα tips κατά την περίοδο τον διακοπών. Όσο αναφορά το δωμάτιο τώρα,είναι ένα υπέροχο διαμέρισμα μέσα στη φύση,με πολύ ωραία θέα,δυο πολύ όμορφα μπαλκόνια που το ένα το μεγάλο έχει και ξαπλώστρες.(τα βραδιά είναι υπέροχα να κάθεσαι και να απολαμβάνεις τα αστέρια στον πεντακάθαρο ουρανό). Τα δωμάτια παρά πολύ καθαρά με κουζίνα και γενικότερα ότι χρειάζομασταν υπήρχε. Η τοπεθεσια είναι μακριά από τη βαβούρα του κέντρου,αλλά κοντά σε αυτο(περίπου 20-30 λεπτά) Σίγουρα στο επόμενο ταξίδι μας στην Κρήτη θα μείνουμε πάλι στο Arete Apartments του Sean και την Helen Σας ευχαριστούμε!

Tranquil location and lovely hosts
Chose the location as an ideal base to explore the Westen side of Crete and found it to be in a perfect setting set amongst olive trees in a small quiet village but just a five minute drive down to Melame and all the facilities on offer there. Sean and Helen were perfect hosts, ex pats who are well settled and able to offer lots of advice about the local area and a wealth of knowledge from Sean in relation to the battle of Crete in World War II. Loved being able to join them on their early morning check on the turtle nests. The apartment had everything you needed and was so tranquil. Apart from the noise of the dogs, ducks and chickens which roam the grounds....in a good way. Used a car during our stay and would recommend trips to Rethymno, Fallasarna, Chania and Paleochora. The beach at Elafonissi is stunning but get there early to avoid the masses that descend there. For a quiet swim, we headed down to the beach next to Menta bar in Melame most afternoons. Best place to eat is Frisini Gardens in a neighbouring village for beautiful traditional Cretan cooking. Really enjoyed our stay and would happily recommend.

Perfect and relaxing
A lovely quite location but in easy reach of beaches and restaurants. The owners are nothing but kind & helpful, they tell the best locations to visit. The appointment is very clean & tidy. We have been staying with Sean & Helen for four years on our visits to Crete. We would recommend this place to anyone wanting a quiet relaxing holiday.

Come a casa
La location di Arete Crete è bellissima ed Hellen e Sean sono due padroni di casa davvero premurosi. L'appartamento ha tutte le comodità e tutto funziona alla perfezione. Si entra in una camera da letto con un piccolo terrazzino e poi di accede alla zona cucina con un terrazzo più grande e un bagno con doccia. Tutto intorno una meravigliosa campagna cretese, olive, fichi, fiori di ogni genere. Galline, papere cani e anche tante anzi troppe cicale ma io sono una persona terrorizzata dagli insetti quindi l'entrata e l'uscita dalla fattoria era sempre un'avventura. La posizione è ottima perché è sufficientemente lontana dalla strada principale ma anche un luogo strategico per raggiungere le migliori località della zona. Lo consiglio a tutti quelli che amano immergersi nella natura e sentirsi parte di essa. Grazie

Une merveilleuse étape
Helen et Sean sont adorables et font le maximum pour rendre le séjour agréable. L'appartement est confortable (bonne literie), bien équipé, propre avec 2 terrasses bien orientées (l'une ou l'autre à l'ombre). Le lieu est très calme, à cinq minutes (en voiture) d'une super plage. Logement idéal pour visiter cette partie de la Crète.

Relaxing and secluded, but close enough to all the spots you'll want to visit.
Awesome location and a quality place to stay. It's in a quite village and run by a english expat couple who have spent the last 12 years going native. They had plenty of advice on where to find secluded beaches that were quiet even in peak times and had spot-on recommendations for what were easily our two best meals in Greece. They and their apartment were perfect at getting us out of the resort strip along the coast and into a more calming vibe. We'd definitely stay here again if we came back to Crete. Try the 3 Euro litre of red from the local store!

Perfect
Stayed at Arete for a long weekend, just what we needed great location peace and quiet, olive trees, chickens and ducks running wild.... what more could you want. Room was clean and well equipped and had two great balconies. 5 minutes to the beach, many lovely tavernas. Shaun and Hellen ( and the dogs ) made us feel right at home. Would definitely return. Big thanks guys.

Another great stay at Arete
We returned to Arete for the third time in May and our enjoyment at staying there remains undiminished and in fact grows with each visit. Arete is in a beautiful location in a rural setting at the edge of a small village and overlooking olive trees and orange groves as far as the eye can see away to distant hills and mountains. There are two self catering apartments side by side on the first floor above the owner's property. Each apartment has a large balcony from which you can watch the sun go down, a kitchen/dining area, a bathroom and a bedroom area and is decorated in a traditional Greek style and is full of charm. It has a real "away from it all" feel where the main noise is the clucking and quacking of the owner's chickens and ducks and the occasional barking of dogs and crowing of cockerels. Arete is an ideal location for the independent traveller who is fully prepared to drive abroad and explore the western end of the beautiful island of Crete. However, situated just 3km inland from the beach resort of Maleme, and in a rural setting, you can opt to sunbathe and go for walks locally or jump in the car and drive to beaches and gorges further afield. A car is a necessity for there are no tavernas or restaurants close by but there are some good ones a short drive away. There is plenty to do in Crete but it is helpful to know what and where and when. One of the special things about Arete are the owners Helen and Sean who are willing and able to provide local knowledge and personal experience about where to go and more importantly when to go so that you get the most out of the experience. Would we go again to Arete? You bet - in September!

About the neighbourhood
The village of Xamoudochori is located 3 kilometers inland from the coastal village of Maleme, west Crete. Approximately 40 kilometers from the airport at Chania (airport code CHQ) a 40 minute drive. Or 160 kilometers from the airport at Heraklion (airport code HER) a 2 to 3 hour drive. Xamoudochori is a small farming village with 1 kafeneon, serving drinks and snacks. It's rural location is ideally situated for an authentic Cretan holiday experience but also close enough to the tourist areas such as Platanias 5 kms away.

A car is recommended as the local bus route is in Maleme, 3kms away. We can arrange a bespoke tour to the Samaria Gorge, a guided tour of Chania Town, a brewery visit, wine tasting and much more. Please ask us for more information.

Firstly, it is important that you are made fully aware that we are not on any main road, we are not even on the village main road, we are located down a small, agricultural, single vehicle type track. You won't see us on Google Street maps, we don't have a street name or address, it's just Arete Apartments. We give full detailed directions but also the option to call us from the village and we will come and meet you. Nearest airport is Chania (CHQ) 45 minutes drive away. Arete is located apprx 20 kilometers West of Chania Town , 40 kilometers West of Chania Airport and 3 kms inland from the coastal village of Maleme. Detailed directions given on booking.
