Souters is a good base from which to explore the countryside and other East Anglian delights, being just 5 minutes drive from the A12 midway between Ipswich and Colchester. The historic market town of Hadleigh is 5 miles away with buildings of interest and an individual high street with varied shopping opportunities. Ideal for a quiet break to enjoy the surrounding Constable countryside by foot or bicycle. Dedham is an attraction for artists and is just 2 miles away with art gallery and shop, Munnings museum and tea houses. Dedham has become a very popular base recently for 'wild' swimmers and for other water based activities.

Interaction with guestsWe like to have personal contact with all our guests from initial enquiry to booking, through to arrival. We live in a cottage just down the track on the smallholding and like to welcome all visitors to Souters, are always available for assistance or information but leave guests in the privacy of the setting once they are settled. We do all we can to ensure that every visit is enjoyable and comfortable and ask that if any issues arise during your stay that we are contacted at the time to sort it out - we can't do that after the holiday.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

A sanctuary far from the madding crowd
This is an idyll. A beautifully appointed property for two people nestling amongst broadleaf woodland. There is a lovely walk down through the woods to the river and you can wander along the riverbank and watch the wildlife. When we were there we saw [amongst others] hobbies and a little egret. We also regularly heard nightingales when we sat outside each evening. That was a first for both of us. The property's owners [Cath and Nick Marno] are absolutely charming and a delicious home-made lemon drizzle cake was waiting for us when we arrived. The property has everything you could possibly need [and more] and provisions can be obtained from several local farm shops including one in Stratford St Mary, as well as the large Co-op in Hadleigh. Both are within a short drive. There are also plenty of pubs that do food as well if you want to eat out. Or you could avail yourselves of the outdoor pizza oven that is provided at the property! In fact you need never leave the area around Souters Barn. There are lots of public footpaths in the surrounding countryside and plenty of of lovely old churches to explore. We could not have asked for more. Thank you again Cath and Nick

Quiet and secluded
If you want a quiet location this property fits the bill. It is located a little way down a track off a single-track road but close to Dedham, Flatford and Colchester. Sports car owners with low suspension may need to be careful. Friendly owners with milk and a cake provided when we arrived. The property has almost everything you need, although there is no freezer, apart from the small compartment in the fridge. The kitchen had plentiful utensils with an ample supply of mugs and crockery plus dishwasher tablets, etc. This was useful as it meant the dishwasher did not need to go on too often. Underfloor heating worked well and kept us nice and warm. The bedroom is a little cramped for space but OK while the lounge and kitchen areas are a good size with ample space.

Fabulous location, calm and tranquil environment and wonderful hosts
If you like peace and quiet, nature all around, great facilities then stay here! Great bathroom and kitchen including nice hot water and a dishwasher (always a plus). Heating and log burner will keep you warm even in the coldest months (as well as being cosy and romantic) and Cath and Nick are great unobtrusive hosts. I honestly couldn’t fault it and I have travelled a lot and stayed in many countries and places. Perfectly located to visit lots of English sites of interest and conveniently near enough to the A12 for connection to motorways or not far from the Ferry at Harwich if travelling from Europe.

There are more good places to eat opening all the time locally and we can recommend many. The wood fired pizza oven at Souters also provides much entertainment and good food.

An idyllic, rural retreat with beautiful, peaceful surroundings.
The location is ideally placed for exploring the Dedham Vale/Stour valley along the south suffolk/north Essex borders and historical towns such as Bury St edmunds and Colchester just a few miles down the road. The accommodation is cosy and comfortable, airy and light, with an optional wood burning stove and an outdoor pizza oven with logs and kindling supplied free for the first use, then charged for thereafter at a reasonable rate. Kitchen is well stocked offering more than some self catering accommodations provide, in short lots of extras. The owners also providea complimentary home made cake and sometimes milk and/or eggs. There is also underfloor heating which is easily controlled with thermostats and a boiler room adjacent to the dwelling. You have access to large gardens, garden furniture in a sublimely peaceful setting. You very rarely hear distant traffic, so a great getaway for peace and quiet. Great for encouraging kids to be in nature too.

Living the Dream at Souter and Gribbles
This is our second time staying at Souters and Gribbles Higham and it was just as amazing as our first... Peaceful, homely and teaming with Wildlife. We were welcomed by a wonderful homemade cake and beautiful fresh-cut country flowers. Our 2 boys stayed in Gribbles ( the shepherds hut) and we stayed in Souters. Our boys were delighted that they had their own holiday home along side ours. It gave us peace and gave them their own space too. Both have very comfortable beds. Souters and Gribbles have easy access to the A12 to visit both Essex and Suffolk for day trips, but you can truly relax in the knowledge that once you return you do so to total peace in the outdoor space and inside. The outdoors offers a huge garden with an awesome pizza oven and BBQ. We really enjoyed the private river walk though the coppiced woodland out to the meadows. Can’t wait to return. Love the place.😀

Mrs
We had two wonderful weeks in this lovely property. Very rural but at the same time convenient for sightseeing in the immediate area and beyond via nearby dual carriageway. The cottage was comfortable and homely with everything we needed, and our hosts were great. Highly recommended.

Lovely cottage in tranquil setting
What a wonderful place to stay! The cottage was immaculate and very well-equipped for self-catering and there was a delicious cake on arrival. The main room inside with a kitchen area, dining table and plenty of informal seating was excellent. Outside there is a lovely patio area with table and chairs, plus sun loungers for enjoying the sunshine, and the birdsong. There is a lawned area too surrounded by wildflowers and grasses. It was a great base for visiting Dedham Vale. We parked the car at Dedham and walked along the River Stour to Flatford Mill. Beautiful! We enjoyed a visit to Lavenham, the Guildhall there and a walk round the town. We highly recommend this cottage - one of best we have stayed in.

About the neighbourhood
Ipswich is a lively town for the arts with three theatres, lots of museums, shopping for those interested and a variety of good places to eat. Colchester also has a thriving Arts scene including theatres and galleries. Both towns have food and arts based festivals throughout the year. There are many good farm shops in the area selling local produce and a growing number of micro breweries and vineyards. The Suffolk coast, including Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh and Southwold are within easy reach for a day out.
Getting around
Having a car is very useful here however there are very good local taxi firms who on occasion have delivered guests from the local railway station (Manningtree or Colchester) and collected them again at the end of their stay. There are plenty of varied walks from the property which could end at a choice of pubs from where a taxi could collect guests to bring them home.
