This Grade II* medieval hideaway boasts seven hundred years of history - and with its towers it feels like you are living in a fairy tale castle. Stay from 1 night to 2 weeks. It is cheaper the longer you stay. Please contact us for further information on availability and prices. Extensively refurbished in 2008, the Gatehouse offers a charming loft-style living area within its ancient structure, retaining the beams, thick walls, and stone mullion windows. A deep leather sofa, wood burning stove and delightful sleeping space, all add to a uniquely romantic experience. You can even climb up to the top of the tower, to the viewing platform! We have an EV Charger (Electric Vehicle Charger). It is 7.2 KW type 2 untethered - so please bring your own cable. You will need to download the TAP Electric App to use it. Heating is provided by a wood burning stove (logs are provided) and two night storage heaters. It is cosy and warm in winter. In summer the thick walls, and windows on both sides help you keep cool. The property boasts a modern 'wet room' with shower, a fully fitted kitchen with oven and hob, fridge and small freezer. There is a TV with freeview, DVD player, CD player with ipod docking facility. Downstairs there is a washing machine and tumble dryer if you need it. Please note, this ancient building's charm includes a steep spiral staircase. Access to the gallery bedroom is via a companionway ladder, and requires you to duck underneath a beam. If you have any challenges around mobility please look at the accessibility statement. Note we advise you to bring a couple of smaller bags rather than one very heavy and large case...as the steep spiral staircase has some 30 steps to get to the main living area, and space on the staircase is restricted. Outside The property is self contained, and has its own entrance. There is parking for two cars (one behind the other). The owners live at the other end of the garden in a sixteenth century Monmouthshire gentry house. You can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful walled garden. There is a barbeque for you to use. AWARD WINNING PROPERTY On 26 June 2009 William Ayot was presented with an award for building conservation for the works done at Moynes Court at the Gatehouse and Courtyard House. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Great overnight stay.
What a special place to stay. Very quirky but superbly decorated. Lots of information about the Gatehouse, the locality, places to eat & visit. Topped off by a lovely welcome basket.

A beautiful visit
This is my second visit to the Gatehouse. In June I came with my daughter and granddaughter visiting from the States. We had a lovely stay. This week my other daughter and I stayed and again had a wonderful time. The facilities provided are first-rate. I would love to come for several days and explore the area more thoroughly. The only problem is that it is quite expensive but it is well worthwhile.

‘Quirky, comfortable and very different!
The Welsh Gatehouse was not just a night away, it was an experience. We really felt like we had our own castle! Going through the huge wooden door at the entrance, climbing the narrow stone staircase to the accommodation, sleeping on the mezzanine level at the top of a ladder, looking through the medieval windows, climbing to the top of the tower then through a hatch door to enjoy the amazing view all made things seem like an adventure! The accommodation felt very cosy and we had everything we needed. For anyone wanting something comfortable but quirky, this is an ideal place to stay. Nearby Chepstow and Tintern were great to visit and there are loads of walks around the Wye Valley.

King or Queen for a day
The castle is an amazing place. It is a great piece of history and has everything you need for a lovely stay. It is a treat to go through the ancient door and to walk up the spiral staircase to the amazing space. Also wonderful to find a lovely basket of goodies waiting :). Despite being near the motorway, you do not notice, even when outside - if you are brave enough to venture up to the turret. We really liked Chepstow which is a great place to visit, especially the castle and the Three Tuns Pub and some lovely independent shops. It is definitely a tick off the bucket list to stay in a castle. It was an absolute joy, and in this case, it is all your own. The owner's Manor House is at the end of the garden, but you have all the privacy needed. This is a real special treat (and also has a gorgeously comfortable bed) so if anyone out there wants to know how it feels be be a King or Queen for a day - go for it - you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

Unique and lovely
We had a wonderful time staying in this unique and historic place for 3 nights. The bed is very comfortable, and the apartment has everything needed for a great stay. I liked the fact that there was a separate loft to store suitcases and clothes. I didn't mind the wetroom bathroom, my husband didn't love it. The views out the windows and from the tower are lovely. Note to other travellers, we did manage to get our full size suitcases up the narrow winding stairs! (We were travelling for 6 weeks from Canada). Second note - watch your head, and remember to duck where needed! There is much to see in the area. We particularly enjoyed a visit to Raglan Castle.

This is THE place for a celebration. Unique. History. Amazing place
This is the place to go, to celebrate an event. Apparently many people have proposed on the top of the tower. It is steeped in history. It is a truly amazing and unique place. Everything was perfect. It was spotlessly clean, quiet, restful, and utterly unique. We stay in historic places all the time and have never found one as old and as perfect as this one. I highly recommend it. We used the barbecue and sat in the garden. It was bliss. Not only this, but as a treat they put up balloons and organised a cake for my husband....and a bottle of champagne. They were very helpful
