The fully-fitted and exceptionally well equipped kitchen leads to a Victorian-style conservatory and dining room with an 8 foot square table that seats 12 to 14. It is the perfect house for family and friends gatherings. Wellwood lodge is ideally located for exploring this unique and attractive area of England's Peak district. Countryside forms the backdrop and far reaching views are from the front windows. A short walk from the house takes you to heather moorlands, woods and wetlands. No car? not a problem with train and buses into the town centre. Buxton's beauty is a popular choice for weddings, the house is in walking distance of the Palace Hotel, Old Hall Hotel, Devonshire Dome and Pavilion Gardens, all popular reception venues. We have had brides leave from our door for their big day, families delighted to have a venue where they can relax informally together without the constraints of a hotel. The house is on a hillside with front and enclosed rear garden with a small lawn. For a small fee we allow owners to bring their well behaved dogs to enjoy their holiday too. Buxton's vibrant and cosmopolitan town centre is just 10 minutes on foot. I will personally welcome my visitors and endeavor to point you in the direction of essential things to do and see. As a resident since childhood I am an enthusiast of my beautiful town, the specialist shops within the Cavendish arcade the former spa bathing area, the extensive choice of places to sample the local gastronomic delights, the wonderful Opera house and the stunning Pooles cavern which is rated as England's finest show cavern are just a few of the highlights. The beautifully kept 23 acre Pavilion gardens is a wonderful place for all ages to enjoy a fun filled time. (Further information can be found under the heading Buxton on this entry)

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spacious but still cosy
Just spent our annual family gathering at Wellwood Lodge. There were ten of us and a dog. The house was clean, warm and well equipped. It is a bonus that the owner lives nearby and she left some very nice welcome goodies for us. We thought the layout of the house worked really well for us. The lounge is enormous with lots of seating, we had a group playing games at one end, a jigsaw in progress at the other end and sport on the TV too. The dining room table is square and seats twelve so meal times are very sociable. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need. There is also a conservatory and games room.

Beautiful big house
A beautiful big welcoming home from home in a great location. 12 of us with 2 dogs enjoyed every minute of our stay, celebrating a birthday with friends and family. The bedrooms are huge and there’s more than enough bathrooms and toilets so no queuing and lots of privacy. The location is great, just a short stroll into the town or nearby Corbar Woods. Off road parking and secure garden. A games room was an added bonus. The house was lovely and warm and the owners were incredibly welcoming and helpful. We all agreed Wellwood is well good and we’d love to return.

Jenny thank you so much for your kind words, delighted the house ticked all the boxes for the special birthday get together. Families with dogs do appreciate the 2 quite different walks from the door, woodland or eco wetlands beckon. I hope another celebration will bring your family back before too long. Best regards, Susan

Very comfortable, Ideal for a family get-together
Very well appointed - I don't think we missed anything. The location is quiet and pleasant. In the house there is plenty of space for the grandchildren to run around, and though the garden is fairly small the fine park (Pavilion Gardens) nearby served us very well.

Thank you for writing us a top class review, I appreciate you taking the trouble to write. We are so lucky to have the peak park just yards from our door and the wonderful Pavilion gardens an easy 10 minutes walk. The house plot is half an acre, but with the house in the centre of it and a hillside with deep shrub borders it appears smaller than it actually is. I hope you will bring the family back on a future occasion.

Your time taken to write a review is much appreciated. I'm glad you had an enjoyable 70th birthday celebration. It is also great to hear that Buxton offers many local activities and with a train station in the town that car's are not always essential for a visit. Thank you and we hope to welcome you or your friends in the future.

Excellent family friendly house in the middle of the peak district
The house was in excellent order and provided a great venue for a family get together. Heating worked wonderfully well. Dining room was fabulous and allowed us all to sit round in comfort and enjoy many meals together. Kitchen and bedrooms were great and conservatory was a great place to gather in the morning for coffee and a chat. The house was only a short walk from town and the peak district was a beautiful as ever.

Thank you, your words are much appreciated, we strive to please on all counts, a new roof later in the year should give enhanced insulation to top floor rooms which can get a little too chilly or hot at times of winter chill or summer sun.

Spacious, warm, comfortable home conveniently located to country walks and town centre
The house was spacious for our Dad's 80th birthday gathering. Dining room perfect for family dinners and the 'Lazy Susan' was the star attraction at each meal. Bedrooms warm and comfortable and we enjoyed the games room. Perfectly located for activities in the countryside or the town centre - would recommend!

Excellent Property
We really enjoyed out stay at the property. It is a little more expensive than we normally pay, but you could see the difference in the value. Spacious property that was clean and warm. The kitchen was well equipped and CLEAN! Plenty of space in the living room and dining room. Being able to park in the garage and in front of the garages as well as that part of the road made parking very easy for six cars. as dogs are allowed, and the area is great for walking one suggestion to make small improvement is to have an outside tap - to rinse off dogs and muddy boots? Not a biggy, but a thought. New oven gloves woudl also be great. Overall a great property

Many thanks for taking time to write a positive review of your new year stay. We thought we had addressed the hosing down of dogs and boots with the hose pipe connected to the internal garage tap, there being a soakaway in the garage forecourt, possibly hidden by the parked cars.

About the neighbourhood
Built on the River Wye, and overlooked by Axe Edge Moor, Buxton has a history as a spa town due to its geothermal spring which rises at a constant temperature of 28 °C. The spring waters are piped to St Ann's Well on the historic Georgian Crescent where anyone can take the water. Buxton is the highest market town in England, holding markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the year. The beautiful Pavilion Gardens are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The combination of walks, lakes, water fowl, play areas and miniature train ensure that they remain a firm favourite with the whole family. You may also like to consider indulging in spa treatment therapy at the nearby Devonshire Dome within the University buildings. It is one of the most dramatic spaces in Britain and the largest unsupported dome in Europe. Built in 1779 by the 5th Duke of Devonshire, this magnificent grade II* listed building has dominated the Buxton sky line ever since, open to the public at most times to gaze in awe at the internal dome and listen to the acoustics over a cup of coffee perhaps. indulge in a little retail therapy at the specialist shops within the Cavendish arcade, the former spa bathing area. There is an extensive choice of places to eat to suit all tastes and pockets. The wonderful Opera house a salute to Frank Matcham's inspiration in 1903 delivers a varied programme of drama, concerts, stand up comedians throughout the year. Pooles Cavern & Buxton Country Park. This magnificent natural cavern features spectacular stalactites and crystal formations. Regular guided tours take you through spacious, well lit chambers where you will be introduced to Derbyshires largest stalactite and the unique poached egg stalagmites, it is rated as England's finest show cavern. The surrounding Country Park features woodland trails up to Solomon's temple, stunning 360 degree panoramic views are well worth the climb! With the gathering fame and quality of its summer festival and the new development surrounding the re-opening of the pump rooms and Crescent these are exciting times for local and visitor alike. Though still a place of enduring elegance and peacefulness, modern Buxton pulses with modern cultural activity. Buxton makes a great base for a Derbyshire holiday ideally located within half an hour of a large number of attractions for all age groups and interests. Walking costs nothing and this stunning area brings such delight with its very varied scenery within short distances.
