There's a large well equipped kitchen containing a Rayburn, and two living rooms each with a cosy wood burner. Furniture is mostly antique or older style, in keeping with the overall feel of the house. Comfortably sleeping 10 people, the bedrooms are as follows: Bedroom 1 - (Double) Kingsize four-poster bed, Bedroom 2 - (Double) Kingsize iron double bed Bedroom 3 - (Twin/Double) 2 single beds (which can be made into a large double if requested), Bedroom 4 - (Twin) 2 single beds, Bedroom 5 - (Double) Kingsize double bed. We also have a travel cot if needed. The 10x5m outdoor heated pool is available for the exclusive use of guests staying between May and October. The large attractive garden is great to explore or to play badminton or perhaps a communal game of cricket, football or rounders. Or you could just relax in the hammock next to the fish pond, or a lounger next to the pool! Surrounded by wildlife, Hartwell is visited by owls, buzzards, pheasants, rabbits and occasionally deer. Neighbouring fields play host to a mixture of horses, sheep and cattle. Footpaths lead in various directions from the house making it easy to explore the local countryside. And there's a 15th Century pub down the hill which used to be frequented by Charles I while on his way to visit his mistress at Cotehele! Near by, Tavistock is an attractive and historic rural town with many shops and fantastic restaurants. There is an eclectic mix of local independent shops and eateries as well as a few well known national stores. But a real highlight is the wonderful Pannier Market which has been in existence since the 12th century and changes many of its stalls every day. A short trip in the car takes you to Dartmoor (Devon) in one direction or Bodmin (Cornwall) in the other, and we're equidistant from the North and South Cornwall/Devon coasts, making Hartwell an ideal base from which to explore the West Country.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Truly amazing.
Wow! This house is stunning and everything a country retreat should be. The remote location, oil burning stove, the log burners, beautiful gardens, extensive book collection and abundance of wildlife; this was just perfect for us. We took a group of 10 ranging from 5-65 and all were catered for and happy. The teens spent most of their time in the pool the grandparents tucked away in the cozy TV room and myself just enjoying having a kitchen big enough to cook for 10! The kitchen is so well equipped too there wasn’t a thing I looked for and didn’t find and the dishwasher was handy too! I couldn’t of been happier with our trip and Angus was so helpful and on hand for any queries we had the best time couldn’t recommend enough.

Wonderful house
This is a fantastic place for a family holiday. Ten of us plus a toddler, and a dog, stayed over Easter and thoroughly enjoyed the house and garden, summerhouse and indoor table tennis. The welcome pack was generous and much appreciated - tea, coffee, milk, bread, local honey from the garden, marmalade and more ... The house has five bedrooms, one with a four poster bed, and is surrounded by gardens which are well kept and we made good use of the outside furniture. Full marks to Angus 😁

Wonderful place for a family holiday!
We have just returned from the most wonderful holiday at Hartwell. Ten family members comprising of three generations (ranging from 14yrs - 69yrs) and two labradors have enjoyed every single minute with everyone catered for. Angus has thought of every last detail to ensure a pleasurable stay. The teenagers enjoyed the heated pool throughout the day and into the night...when the pool is lit with underwater lights! The adults enjoyed a well deserved rest and relaxed with books, walks and we all experienced some nearby attractions. The beautiful house is spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped with good quality bedding, kitchen utensils, furniture....in fact absolutely everything you could ask for. I would not hesitate to visit again or recommend Hartwell to anyone.

Fantastic Farmhouse near Tavistock.
This farmhouse was a perfect choice for a big family 3 day weekend break. Comfy, 5-star accommodation & a wonderful welcome pack thoughtfully provided by the considerate owner. Everything that we had hoped for. See you soon!

Incredible house in a beautiful location
We had the most fantastic stay in Hartwell over the half term week in May. The house and the grounds are beautiful and it's the perfect place for a family holiday. I can honestly say that Angus has thought of absolutely everything for the house - more so than any other house we've ever stayed at. There is such a comprehensive guide to the house with all the information you could possibly need about it and the surrounding area. Above and beyond things have been thought of like plugs are labelled in the house where they need to be, having two bath mats in each bathroom (one always gets soaked!), all the cleaning and cooking things you could possibly need, a lovely welcome basket (including cuddly toys for our kids), ingredients to make fresh baked bread etc.! There's also absolutely loads of games and books and Netflix on the TV etc. for evenings or if the weather isn't in your favour. The garden and outdoor facilities are amazing with so much equipment and so much to keep everyone entertained - the pool is beautiful! There's loads of beach equipment (even huge mats and a sun tent for little ones). We also had the most amazing time in the surrounding area: the Tamar trails were beautiful and we really enjoyed trips to Morewelham Quay, Calstock, Tavistock and Bude. I don't very often leave reviews but the house, exemplary hosting and beautiful area compelled me to. This certainly won't be our last trip to the house - if you're at all thinking about it then go ahead and book!

Fantastic holiday farmhouse for whole family
A fantastic home to enjoy for a family getaway. We visited as 3 generations of family members, and all loved it. So much to do at the house and excellent amenities provided. Easy access to explore Devon and Cornwall from. But you don't really need to go anywhere either with the private pool and gardens alternatively. Really good host, who has all bases covered with info and support in advance, and during the stay.

Perfect self contained holiday house
It is a strange time to holiday, which meant that we did less of the usual activities such as eating out and much more hanging around at the house, in the gardens and just exploring the local area. Hartwell is perfect for this. The first 5 days of our 10 day break we had glorious weather and did very little away from the house. Hanging out around the pool and playing frisbee in the huge garden was mostly the order of the day. The second part of the holiday we were not blessed with such great weather but we still made the most of it by playing board games in the kitchen and exploring some of the wonderful rugged local area. 2nd visit for our family and our 3rd is already booked - I guess that says it all! The perfect location for a family stay in Devon
In August we (4 adults, 6 kids) spent a week at Hartwell house. The cottage is really a perfect location for a family or group stay in Devon's countryside. All is in very good shape, tidy and clean. Great kitchen and sleeping rooms. Wonderful estate with a flowerful garden. Great pool, heated to 26 degrees. Lots of facilities for the kids (table tennis, table soccer, soccer goal, trampolin ...). Very good pub food in walking distance. Angus (the owner) and Angie (the housekeeper) are super-nice and friendly. Could not be better. We will come back.

Perfect family holiday base in devon / cornawall
Had 1 week at this cottage in June with our family and friends, used as a base for visiting surrounding area. But could have easily just chilled out at this property and gone no where else! Excellent property and facilities - the outdoor pool was great - our 6 & 7 year old kids were in the heated pool when ever possible. The pool is sheltered but also in a sun trap so we made good use of it despite the mixed weather. Towels included. Plenty of space inside and out to keep everyone happy - and several instruments for the budding musicians!. The outside garden area is vast - space for ball games, great trampoline, secluded garden areas, - so great base for a family holiday. Thanks Angus.

Home is where the Hartwell is
Excellent stay in what feels like a home from home, made all the more enjoyable by the beautiful gardens and heated outdoor swimming pool. Hartwell made for a superb location whilst visiting Devon/Cornwall. Ideally located for day trips to the coast and walks with the dogs. 10 minutes from the wonderful Endsleigh Hotel and so many more excellent eateries and traditional pubs, the Royal Inn in Horsebridge is worth walking to for a pint of the locals favourite “Otter”, wander over the Tamar and you’ll find yourself in Cornwall. Angus (and Angie the housekeeper) ensured that every little detail was taken care of for all our guests, including our 5 month old and various friends that dropped in to see us over a five day stay. The house is very well equipped, clean, homely and inviting, along with great linen/towels and a nice little basket of essentials to get you going, much appreciated! We won’t hesitate to book again and are already planning our next adventure to Hartwell.
