A comfortable cottage in Durham City, within easy walking distance to the City Centre, Cathedral and University. The cottage is a grade11 listed building in the Gilesgate conservation area facing on to the green with plenty of free parking. It is a great location for exploring Durham City and the surrounding area. Fern Cottage is firm favourite with parents visiting their sons or daughters at Durham University and the cottage has everything need to make a meal for them during the stay. The cottage has a small private courtyard at the rear. There is a supermarket, a decent pub with food, a fish and chip shop all within a couple of minutes walk of the property. The local bus service is quite good and so a car is not needed to get around. Cottage was first class. Everything was as you would want it yourselves. The only drawback was the proximity to a main road. The traffic noise was 24 hours. Cars, Lorries, klaxons and buses. If you can shut this out this cottage is perfect.

Ideal location and facilities for our week's course at the university. Personal welcome from the owner, and the cottage was tip top.

The cottage was ideal. We were welcomed and shown round, with the central heating explained. There was a "welcome" tray of coffee and tea waiting to be made up. The cottage was spotless. The kitchen was well laid out and had plenty of storage and...More

Spent a really nice week in this lovely cosy cottage. Were pleasantly surprised as it is bigger inside than what we had expected from the photographs. Comfy sofas and bed, slept really well. Nice airy bedroom and large enough kitchen with good range of electrical...More

Lovely old cottage in a lovely old city. Very well equipped and comfortable. Well placed, out of the city centre but only a 10 minute walk into the city, where there are plenty of things to do. Would definitely stay here again.

About the neighbourhood
Fern Cottage is in a conservation area with nice views onto a green with surround historic houses. It is 3 minutes walk from a medium sized Sainsbury's supermarket that is open till 10pm every night. There is a takeaway and fish and chip shop within walking distance and a pub with food. It is within walking distance of the city centre, approx 15 mins and has regular bus service as well.
Getting around
A car is not needed at Fern Cottage, it is within walking distance of the city centre and the Cathedral world heritage site. The bus service is good in the area and it is easy to access most attractions on public transport. Durham is on the East Coast main line and so there are regular trains to Newcastle, Darlington and York. The road network is good and so all of Durham County is easily accessible by car.
