The region is known as 'Las Alpujarras' and is an enchanting part of Spain. Treasured by the Moors as a paradise location this mountainous area is situated between the summits of the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coast of the Costa del Sol. As a holiday destination it is ideal for walking, cycling, riding, photography, painting and the appreciation of flowers and wildlife; but most of all for just unwinding and taking time out. It is within easy striking distance of the historical city of Granada with its fabulous Alhambra Palace, yet is close enough to the coast to enjoy a well deserved day lounging on the beach. During the winter and spring you can even go skiing on the high slopes of the Sierra Nevada - less than two hours by car. Mulhacen is the highest peak in the area (and in mainland Spain) at a little under 3,500 metres. Cortijo Opazo is situated at 1,250 metres in the high Alpujarras and enjoys an excellent climate. The conditions of Andalucia in southern Spain ensure that there is plenty of sun during the winter months when the weather is usually warm enough for t-shirts and light clothing during the day. The summer months are hot but the altitude means that when evening comes there is always a delightful stream of cool air flowing down the valley from the high Sierras, a type of natural air conditioning.Formerly a working farmhouse, Cortijo Opazo can be found in the countryside near the villages of Pitres, Portugos and the area of La Taha, about 25kms from the town of Orgiva. It is surrounded by ancient terraces used today by shepherds and market gardeners. The cortijo has been renovated to provide holiday accommodation in two delightful lodgings, Opazo Vista and Opazo Jardín. These are both well appointed accommodation in a rustic style with comfortable furniture, well equipped kitchens and double bedrooms. Under floor heating throughout the accommodation. Living area is well furnished, wood burning stove for additional cosiness, and a selection of books and games to enjoy. Dining area with table and chairs. Kitchen is fully equipped with modern fitted units, fridge, full-sized electric oven, and a four ring ceramic hob with extractor fan. A good choice of china and kitchen ware is provided. Bathroom has a sink, toilet, and walk-in 'BodySpa' power shower. Double bedroom with a wardrobe, further hanging space, and two shuttered windows that look out to fabulous views of the mountains. Outside there's seating in both shady and sunny areas, and a fabulous garden, all looking across the valley below. Tables, chairs, loungers etc. are available. Outstanding in all respects!
Recommended to us, we headed out for a week of walking and general relaxation. Warmly welcomed on arrival, we took the opportunity to sample Robert and William's home cooking on our first evening. What an introduction to a fabulous week. Breakfast outside overlooking the valley was a great way to start the day. Using the guides provided, we found the walking to be superb, from simple strolls through small villages, to the the longer, more remote hill walks. Robert and William were superb hosts and ensured that our week exceeded our relaxation expectations. Thoroughly recommended, even though it may now mean that more people visit and we find it harder to book our return!

A HAVEN IN LAS ALPUJARRAS
In September 2012 it will be our seventh time at Cortijo Opazo within four years. That should say it all!! If the thought of experiencing Spanish life in a more rural setting appeals to you; listening to the sound of the goats' bells close by; if you appreciate beautiful mountain scenery, deep valleys, visiting local villages, flora and fauna; if you enjoy walking, or simply relaxing in a beautiful garden, enjoying a glass of wine and watching the sun set, this is the place for you. The owners, Robert and William, are wonderful hosts; the accommodation is excellent; their cuisine superb, often using freshly grown ingredients from the garden to help create delicious meals (on request), and their five course specialities are sumptuous! Can't wait for September once again!

Simply Excellent!
We have stayed with Robert & William twice now and both times we have had a truly wonderful holiday. They are excellent hosts, there if needed and always on hand to answer any questions or to give useful local information. I have not sampled their cooking yet as cooking is a passion of mine and it is so good to have a very well equipped kitchen and lots of fresh produce from the local markets. The walking is superb and the walking guide is very useful. The gardens are amazing and so much work had been done since our first visit in 2005. The eggs from the girls are good value and are delicious. If you want the most relaxing holiday ever then come here - you wont be disappointed!

Rural Paradise
Cortijo Opazo is the perfect location for those wanting to enjoy the countryside, with easy access to walks. The owners provide a wealth of information about the area, with detailed descriptions of a large variety of walks. Our apartment was comfortable, and well-equipped for self-catering. We had 2 patios to use, and we spent many hours outside enjoying the sounds and sights of the Alpujarras. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Cortijo Opazo, and hope to return soon.

Total relaxation
A fabulous week in Cortijo Opazo, the most relaxing holiday we've ever had. Stunning views of the Sierra Nevada, breakfast on the terrace to the sound of a goatherd and the hospitality of the owners Robert and William only added to our experience. The accommodation was well appointed and the surrounding countryside glorious for walking or relaxing. Thanks too to Ella and Oska who made this holiday most enjoyable.

Beautiful Cortijo in an incredible setting
Cortijo Opazo is without doubt one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed in. Situated in the High Alpujarra it has commanding views of the mountains and valleys to the South, with the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop. The Cortijo itself is set in beautifully maintained gardens and has every convenience you could ever want. Its location makes it the ideal place for exploring the white villages of the Alpujarra and despite its remote location it is easily accessible via very good roads. We split our time between sightseeing and just relaxing and enjoying the views. The owners were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly – yet let us have our privacy. They were available if needed for advice, otherwise you wouldn’t have known they were there. Although we didn’t take advantage of it, they do offer guided walks which must be a wonderful way to experience the amazing scenery of the region. You can pay for them to cook you a meal on the patio – which I thoroughly recommend as the food was of excellent quality and the portions generous. All in all it was a memorable stay and I plan on returning again as soon as possible.

A Glorious Mountain Retreat
We stayed for a week and were not up to the more serious walks - but toured the local villages by car, ate like kings for very little (especially when Robert and William cooked) and loved sitting on the hillside gazing at the views, reading and sketching. The apartment was beautifully decorated with local rugs and pottery and very, very comfortable. The information provided by the owners was excellent and significantly improved our stay.

Can't wait to go back again
I note other reviewers haven't had the fully catered guieded walking tour which is offered at the Cortijo, so some words about our experience of this- in a nutshell wonderful, and better than we could possibly have imagined. Daily walk tailored to our interests and fitness level - when my husband hurt his knee they rearranged the plans to include some easier walks and even lent him their walking poles! Driven to the start of each walk and picked up at the end with no fuss, interestingly varied fresh lunches packed into containers for us each morning, and we were never left hungry at the end of a walk. William and Robert prepared evening meals of local produce as good as if not better than what you would expect in a restaurant, and brought them to whatever sunny corner of the garden we decided to set up in. And generous breakfast provisions including fresh eggs for us to boil ourselves for breakfast each day too! Much has been said about Robert and William's warm manner and expertise as hosts, and it is all true. Brilliant value for money, we honestly could not recommend it highly enough.

no view from this apartment, weather cold and raining in November.
If you are going to the Cortijo Opazo ensure you know which apartment you are going in as one has a view from a covered terrace and the other has no view and is much smaller. When its cold and raining there is nothing to see and you cant sit out to see anything as there is nothing to see! The larger apartment at least has a covered terrace that you can sit under if you want to look at the view( when we went the clouds were all around us for most of the time and there was no view most of the time anyway but when there could have been we couldn't see it from the apartment. The owners we nice however we were placed in the wrong apartment the first night and were woken up at 10am the day after we to move out to the other - which was smaller and had no views. We were given a bottle of wine for the inconvenience but it was not a nice experience. We wont be going back. Sorry. .

We are very sorry that the weather spoilt your enjoyment of a holiday in the Alpujarras but are pleased that you found the accommodation comfortable. On our website we try our best to give month by month guidance as to what conditions may expected. Cortijo Opazo is, after all, in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and not on the Costa del Sol where the expectation is often one of constant sunshine. We try to help you anticipate the weather by sending you a link in advance to a local forecast website which guests can consult on a daily basis whilst staying here via the freely available wi-fi. November is our ‘low’ season and this is reflected in the cheaper price. At least with the under floor central heating and supply of logs for the stove you weren’t cold, and we hope that the selection of reading books, games and DVDs helped you pass the time until the sun returned. We certainly remember how you expressed your enjoyment of the home cooked meal we served for you in the accommodation on the night of your arrival. Your advice is good, guests need to check very carefully from the information on our own website that they are booking the accommodation and location that is right for them, especially if booking via an agency - the website link is given on all correspondence. As for what you can see from El Lujar, this remains as described on the website, views into the garden and beyond towards the hillside and village of Pitres . We are sorry if low cloud prevented you from appreciating this, but we are situated at a height of 1250 metres above sea level. Regarding the mistake with your accommodation on the first night, we remember this well, it was our fault, it was the first time anything like this had ever happened and we were concerned to make things right for you both. The confusion happened when you arrived two hours before the 4.00pm arrival time and instead of asking you to come back later we welcomed you with an offer of a complimentary glass of wine and showed you into what turned out to be the wrong letting, La Corona. If guests request an early arrival in advance we do our best to accommodate, but on this occasion we were thrown into confusion. The mistake was ours and we did what we could to rectify it. The next day, when we realised what had happened, we felt duty bound to change your lodgings - both according to your choice and the choice of the other guests who were due to arrive that day. Late in morning we knocked on your door to ask if you wouldn’t mind moving and your husband assured us that it wasn’t a problem, that you would willingly swap apartments since you too had realised the error. We felt that the situation was resolved and gave you a bottle of wine to thank you for your understanding, not as compensation. We continued to enquire during your stay as to whether everything was OK - as we do with all our guests. Had we known you still felt aggrieved we would have done whatever we could to rectify the matter in preference to simply reading about it in a review posted five months later. Like all successful businesses we take the satisfaction of our guests very seriously and are disappointed we did not have the opportunity at the time to ensure that you left Cortijo Opazo thoroughly enchanted. We would make every effort to put this matter right if you were to return here one day. Not withstanding, we take your comments on board and we appreciate the time you took to write your review. All of our guests, without exception, should have the best holiday experience possible, and your judgement of ‘poor’ will remain a salutary low point on a business built up over ten years during which we have always strived to be attentive to the wishes of our clients. Just perfect
My friend and I had such a memorable time at this stunning Cortijo. The setting alone is amazing - wonderful views of the Alpujarras from the property. But what makes it super-special is the lovely accommodation. We were warmly welcomed by the hosts and they did everything they could during our stay to make sure we had everthing we needed. The building is beautiful and the apartment was simply furnished and very authentic. There's a peacefulness about Cortijo Opazo, and that peace seeps into your bones and brings with it so much relaxation. The walks - straight trom the door in many cases - are spectacular and the hosts are on hand with as much information as you could possibly hope for the make the most of the time there. The weather was patchy when we were there, as it was far from high-season, but it would take more than patchy weather to get in the way of having a lovely time here. Just sitting on the terrace outside the apartments, taking in the view with a glass of wine, enjoying the peace of the location - it was blissful. In fact, just thinking about it reminds me to make another booking soon.

About the neighbourhood
The Alpujarras is a wonderful place for a holiday and for relaxing generally. It is ideal for walking and offers a vast range of options from challenging high level snow line walks to casual meanderings around the valley. Wherever you go you are accompanied by the sound of water, either from the racing Rio Trevelez and Rio Poqueira, or from the innumerable irrigation channels delivering water to the cultivated land. It is a unique area, treasured by the Moors until they were expelled by the Christians in the 15th century, and still shows many signs of their occupation. Most notably the style of Berber architecture, little white box houses with flat grey roofs supported by sturdy chestnut timbers.

Many people choose to use this area as a base for visiting the city of Granada and the magical Alhambra palace, or for day trips to the coast, but many more are content simply to relax and unwind, enjoying one of the most tranquil holiday spots in Europe. Every season has something special to offer in an area famed for its array of wild flora and fauna. Other activities you can pursue here include painting, horse riding, paragliding, canyoning, guided walks, cycling, sitting, thinking and mellowing. There are a variety of restaurants around including a vegetarian establishment. There are local produce markets, bakeries, a travelling greengrocery van and a fish van to meet all needs. Once you are here, there is no need to leave.
Getting around
Most guests choose to hire a car and this is the easiest way to reach us and to travel around and see the sights. Car hire is reasonable economical in Spain. There is a bus service to the area from Granada which runs three times a day. With careful planning it is possible to arrive here on a bus from Granada or Malaga, and since the shops are only a short walk from the Cortijo (1.5km) it is possible to enjoy a relaxing holiday here without a car - many of our in house walks start and finish at Cortijo Opazo.
