About the neighbourhood
Arienskill cottage is so well placed for exploring the West Coast of Scotland, it is hard to narrow down all the things to see & do there. Lochailort village is in one of the most rugged parts of the Scottish Highlands – the Gaelic name for it is 'An Garbh Criochan' which translates as the 'Rough Bounds'. The whole area, with its soaring mountains and complex coastlines, is glacial in origin and this has produced some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. The cottage is located on the 'Road to the Isles' and the West Highland railway follows this road for much of its scenic length. The train station is nearby. Set in the Glenfinnan area of the Highlands, there is so much to do with walking, cycling and fishing all to be enjoyed from Lochailort village. With the Lochailort Inn as a t...
How to get there
By Road: From the south, east or north of Scotland. Make your way to Fort William by the A82 – just north of Fort William, take the A830 signposted Mallaig. The cottage is located on the left around 25 miles west along A830. From Skye or Mallaig: Take the A830 south towards Fort William for 18 miles (29km) and you'll see the cottage on the right. By Train: Mallaig There are about four trains a day in each direction from Fort William or Mallaig. Note that when you board the train, you must ask the driver or the guard to stop at Lochailort, or the train won't! Scotrail Sleeper services from London (every night except Saturday) terminate at Fort William and connect with a Mallaig-bound train. Scotrail services from Glasgow stop at Fort William then usually go on to Mallaig.
