A Welcome Pack includes wine, pasta, pasta sauce, olive oil, tea, coffee, milk……plus toiletries to start you off. Terrazzo Mercato is an extremely spacious central Spoleto apartment, in the midst of shops, bars and restaurants, next to the Bishop’s Palace, opposite the travellator entrance, from where you can get to anywhere you want in Spoleto. At the same time, it is a quiet apartment, the palazzo set back from the pedestrian mediaeval city lanes, behind a gated atrium. The atrium is both shady and sunlit so you can eat alfresco in comfort and/or sunbathe for much of the day. From the gated atrium, you step into a large sitting/dining room with plenty of comfortable seating for both lounging and dining. This huge expanse leads off from the dining room area, through a door, to a family room that can be either a bedroom and/or a 2nd sitting room – it can sleep 4 persons with 2 sofa-beds and a single bed. A door on the other side of the room leads into one of the two main bedrooms, containing a double bed and a cot. This bedroom opens onto a foyer containing one of two bathrooms. The foyer opens into the other end of the large sitting/dining room ie the dining area. Here, another door leads along a short corridor to the Master bedroom/ensuite. This is a large bedroom, where a single bed can be easily erected. Excellently located, you are in the centre of Spoleto. Above you is La Rocca and Il Ponte, where you are in good company, following in the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi and Michelangelo, the latter when he took breaks from painting the Sistine Chapel to wander in the Sacred Mountains. Il Ponte, a magnificent Roman aqueduct delivers you directly into the midst of a divine place, scattered with alters and outdoor “churches”, monasteries and religious monuments, an intensity of religiosity, suffused within the dells, the caves and the flanks of the mighty Monteluco mountain, an overwhelmingly beautiful place. Here, irrespective of your faith or lack of, you cannot fail to be aware of a presence mightier than you ! Below you are a dizzying array of piazzas, punctuated with arched alleys and cobbled lanes, gelaterias, bars and churches, ampitheatres, cheese, truffle and wine shops all the way to the bottom of Spoleto, where you alight at the main drag, Corso Garibaldi, where Andy Warhole would famously parade his 2 black and white poodles, terminating at Piazza Garibaldi, the main gateway to Spoleto historic centre. Beyond Piazza Garibaldi, it is a mere 8 minutes walk to Spoleto centre or a short bus-ride either from here or from close to Terrazza Mercato. Immediately outside of central Spoleto, you are again accosted by an intense sensory awareness as you walk through ancient olive groves that stretch out from central Spoleto, across the mountains and along the great plain, encircled by Gubbio, Assisi, Orvieto, Spello, Montefalco and Perugia, along ancient trails, perused for 1000s of years, the history of those who have gone before echoing down the ages. About the neighbourhood
Spoleto is akin to a giant, fairy-tale castle. Sprinkled with bars, restaurants and shops, peppered with piazzas, Spoleto sits magestically amidst a maze of tunnelled, cobbled lanes and alley-ways, all leading skywards to the famous Rocca, the aquaduct and, some of the best views in the world. A surreal setting, a stage-set in the making, fringed by mountains, olive groves, vineyards, mediaeval monasteries, towns, cities and tiny hill-top villages - all beckoning a visit, Spoleto is truly a temptress. Succumb to her beauty and you must use all your will-power to leave, even for a short while. Quite simply, Spoleto is the most captivating city in Italy, never mind Umbria, Venice and Florence being on a par.
