Casa la Rocca

Overview
Condo/Apartment -
2 Bedrooms , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 4
Sulmona, Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo
Casa La Rocca is a lovely reconstructed farmhouse standing at the southern end of the Sulmona valley.

The house and attached apartment are set within quiet fields, orchards and vineyards and enjoy tremendous views in all directions of the surrounding mountains and national parks. It's a great place for a peaceful holiday in magnificent countryside and yet within a few kilometres of the market town of Sulmona and the beautiful old hilltop village of Pettorano Sul Gizio.

Accommodating outdoor enthusiasts is our speciality. We love to help walkers, cyclists, skiers, climbers and naturalists get the very most out of their trip to this wonderful region. Stuart, one of the owners, is the author of 'Walking in Abruzzo', published by Cicerone Press in July 2011.

But catering for those seeking a less active holiday is an equal plea...

Interaction with guests
We live at Casa La Rocca and will be there during your stay. We are always available for help and advice from when we welcome you until when you leave - weather, walking routes, markets etc... Just occassionally we may be away but we would let you know in advance and usually a friend will be in the house to cover for us. The main house and entrance are on the opposite side of the building so you won't really be aware of us unless you need us or fancy a chat! We have two dogs who love to make friends with our guests.

• Calascio and Rocca Calascio - simply the best castle and view in Abruzzo
• Campo Imperatore - a high mountain plateau - wild, vast, magnificent
• Sulmona - the beautiful town just down the road and centre of the valley - cycle in on market day!

• Passo San Leonardo - the high point of the mountain road across the Maiella
• Pettorano Sul Gizio - our ancient and quite delightful hill top commune - take an hour or two and walk up

Getting around
It's best to have a car when you are staying at Casa La Rocca as there is not a good bus service to the house and the railway station and stops for the main bus routes are in Sulmona - 4km away. The nearest shops are also in Sulmona. And you will need a car to get to most of the mountain areas.

Trains and buses from Sulmona, though, are good and go in all directions. Stuart has developed a number of walking days out that make specific use of rail and bus connections.

Cycling around the area is great and you can explore the Val del Gizio on foot directly from the apartment including the walk up to the village of Pettorano which is a lovely thing to do - takes about 90 minutes.
