Perched on beautiful Shapridge Hill at the end of a quiet track, Wren Cottage is the perfect romantic getaway. The cottage is a haven of peace and tranquillity and the large wildlife garden enjoys stunning views over the surrounding countryside. Footpaths lead from the front door onto a vast network of Forest paths and tracks; you can literally walk for miles! The cottage benefits from a large wildlife garden with its own birdhide and excellent views. Feeders are provided with plenty of nuts and seeds for you to top them up, as well a pair of binoculars so you can really get a good view! If you love wildlife, you will love the garden, for example watching the swallows skimming the surface of the pond for insects in summer and witnessing the house martins mobbing a hobby overhead! If you love wildlife, you will love the garden, for example watching the swallows skimming the surface of the pond for insects in summer and witnessing the house martins mobbing a hobby overhead! In winter you maybe lucky enough to see a rare hawfinch as we did this year. If not, take a stroll to the churchyard and keep an eye out below the yew trees and you might well be lucky. Inside the Cottage has been renovated to high standard, and retains much of its rustic charm, including it's large fireplace which has now been fitted with a woodburner to set the scene for those cosy, romantic evenings in. (There is additionally a modern convector heater in each room). Relax listening to your own tracks via the bluetooth speaker or watching a DVD on the flat screen TV. A selection of DVDs, books, local walking guides and an OS leisure map of the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean are also provided. After a great days exploring and relaxing enjoy a good nights sleep in the comfy double bed with your own ensuite facilities. The only sound you are likely to hear is the tawny owl in a nearby tree! We provide a wildlife guide to the birds and animals you are likely to spot at the cottage as well as a information on all local nature reserves and how to get there. Wren Cottage welcomes pets by prior arrangement and from 2018, pets go free! Just make sure you let us know so that we can give a good doggy welcome!. The Cottage has been awarded 'Pets Welcome' by Visit Britain and therefore fully meets the criteria which have been devised to ensure holiday accommodation meets your pet's requirements. There are many outdoor activities available in the Forest; hire a canoe or a kayak and paddle down the Wye, or a mountain bike and take to the cycle tracks which lead you through mile after mile of beautiful woodland. For those interested in history, within half an hour there are the Dean Heritage Centre and the border castles of Chepstow and Goodrich to name but a few. A bit further afield Hereford cathedral where you can view the famous Mappa Mundi, Tewkesbury Abbey and Gloucester Cathedral are well worth the visit. Within an hour's drive you could also take in the Cotswolds, The Brecon Beacons, or the Malvern Hills. Mitcheldean is the nearest town 3 miles away, providing a small supermarket, Post Office, Butcher's, Green Grocer's, Fish & Chip Shop and Chemist's. There is a wider variety of shops and facilities at Cinderford, 5 miles away. PLEASE NOTE THAT ACCESS TO ALL OUR RENTALS IS VIA A SINGLE TRACK UNMADE ROAD More

About the neighbourhood
There is plenty to see and do in the local area. Here are a few examples; Puzzle wood, the film set for the most recent Star Wars Film Canoeing the Wye Mountain Biking (Bike hire available at Peddalabikeaway in Cannop) Visit a number of magnificent castles on the Welsh borders. See Peregrine falcons and admire the views at Symonds Yat Rock Go Ape Walk the Sculpture Trail from Beechenhurst Lodge Visit Tintern Abbey in the Wye Valley Tour the Mill and taste the cider at family run Westons Cider, in Much Marcle Visit the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust's reserves and see birds such as Haw Finch, Cross bills, shrike, Hobby and Goshawks.
Getting around
We are not on a bus route, so most people will find a car essential unless the purpose of the holiday is to walk from the cottage everyday. The walks do start from the doorstep of the cottage. Without a car, access would be by bus from Gloucester railway station to Mitcheldean and then either walking (45 mins with some uphill) or by taxi. There is no taxi rank, so the taxi would need to be pre-ordered.
