A charming, beautifully refurbished two/three bedroom gite situated in the old stables of an 18th-century Charentaise house in the peaceful village of Migron - the heart of the Cognac/Pineau producing area. Upstairs are two loft bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with twin beds and both with fitted cupboards and shelves. A French day bed, situated in a mezzanine level upstairs, can also be converted into a night bed to accommodate a fifth person if required. Facilities at L'Ecurie include: satellite TV (including BBC and ITV); French terrestrial TV, DVD player, stereo cd mini hi-fi, full-sized dishwasher and washing machine. The property has fibre broadband wifi at download speeds of 380Mbps. The 9m x 4m pool is solar-heated during the cooler months, has a level floor, and full steps. It is fully fenced and has childproof gates. It is the only area shared with the adjoining house. Alongside books, maps, board games and tourist leaflets are many suggestions for days out and information on local shops, restaurants and markets. Wireless Broadband is available at no cost. L'Ecurie can also be hired with Thouvenin (Property Reference 297994) to provide accommodation for up to 15 people.Up to 25% off Brittany Ferries travel is available on all bookings. The small village of Migron, with its pretty, 11th Century stone church, is perfect for those who don't want to be too remote, with a boulangerie, a butchers, a well-stocked mini-market, post office and a weekly grocer's van selling fresh local vegetables. Oysters and mussels are sold in front of the epicerie every Saturday morning.Excellent markets can be found nearby on just about every day of the week - in Saintes, Cognac, St Jean d'Angely, Matha, Burie, among others. Brocantes (or flea markets) are held in local villages on most weekends, and artisans fairs - such as the annual Foire aux Vins in Migron held in June - are frequent throughout the summer. Migron and the surrounding area is excellent for cycling - miles and miles of level countryside with virtually traffic-free routes through vineyards, fields, woodland and villages. Other activities include river trips, antiques markets (large brocantes held in surrounding villages regularly throughout the summer), visits to chateaux, churches and museums, walking, cycling and birdwatching (74 hectares of lagoon nature reserves in the area). Sport and leisure in the area include golf (18-hole courses in both Cognac and Saintes which are 20 minutes away), horseriding, all types of fishing, tennis (including a court in the village), canoe-kayaking (boats to hire at various places along the Charente in Cognac and Saintes), and plenty of space in and around the village to kick a football. The region is littered with historic villages, cosmopolitan cities and some of France's most beautiful beaches with miles of white sand. Its not a heavily populated area, with a real sense of space, but with good motorway links that makes travelling quick and easy. It's a wonderfully varied landscape, with seemingly endless vineyards and sunflower fields stretching to the horizon all around our village. Head towards the coast though and you encounter beautiful sea marshes, packed with wildlife and a bird watcher's paradise. And then there are the islands.. Ile de Re, home to celebrities and feeling more like Greece than France... and Ile d'Oleron a two mile ride across an amazing bridge and miles and miles of undeveloped beaches backing onto pine forests. And if you want a taste of them all there's no better than the preserved steam railway that runs throughout the summer. The beautiful sandy beaches of Royan are just forty minutes away from the house and those islands just a bit further. Also within an hour's drive are Rochefort and La Rochelle with its historic port, world class aquarium and fantastic shopping

Perfect French holiday - total tranquility. Will be back!
We visited L’Ecurie for a family holiday in June and had a great time. The property sits in Migron, a classic village with all the French character and charm that we hoped for and a Boulangerie to die for. The warm swimming pool was a natural focus for the family with sun loungers and an outdoor dining area and some cooler shaded areas for the middle of the day. To be honest it was sometimes a struggle to drag ourselves off the swing chair overlooking the cute orchard and head to nearby Cognac and Saintes, but also well worth it. Make sure you hit the Saintes Saturday market selling the best of everything next to the impressive Cathedral. The surrounding area is all about Cognac vineyards and sunflowers which made for some great warm evening strolls. We are always slightly nervous when booking our accommodation, but everything from the comfy beds to the clean and well-equipped kitchen and bathroom was spot on. All-in we had a great family holiday and the only downside was having to head back to the ferry!

Picturesque property with gorgeous surrounds
We’ve just returned from a short notice break to L’Ecurie in Migron. The village itself is lovely, surrounded by vineyards, and with its own bakery which has the best bread we’ve tasted in years. I believe they also supply other shops in the area. There are some great places to visit all within 20-30 minutes, Saintes being our favourite with its elegant main boulevard, river and Roman remains. The gite is wonderfully atmospheric and is I think a conversion of former stables. It has a well equipped kitchen that doubles as a dining area, and leads onto the outside dining space that has loads of loungers/armchairs. Ideal for eating outside which we did most days. The pool is amazing and only a few yards away, we didn’t have any children with us but it has an enclosure so should be safe for families. We also loved the upstairs lounge. We'd a couple of cooler days so we snuggled up there with the TV. The owners sent loads of information before we arrived, so we could plan our stay effectively and Bernal the caretaker was also really helpful. Highly recommend.

Looking for Love
That was the message I received from L’Ecurie. The gite has the potential to be lovely, but it isn’t. On the good side it was clean and the kitchen/living room large and relatively well equipped though not well maintained ie no place in the fridge door to put milk, fruit juice or wine bottles. Broken and not replaced. It was not made clear that there is just one bathroom (with shower and toilet) and it’s on the ground floor. The stairs to the first floor are precipitous making a trip to the loo at night somewhat hazardous! There is one TV situated upstairs in a small room. The view from the sitting area is of a pool surrounded by green netting. No covered area to sit should the weather be cloudy or uncertain. Outside seating for 12, 1 wine glass provided! I have notified the caretaker and owner with a letter and an email, but so far no response

We are truly sorry that the guests did not enjoy their stay. Unfortunately, the review is neither fair nor comprehensive and requires a response. It fails to mention the other rather extraordinary messages received after their stay. These included that there was a screw high in the wall where "a clock should have been". To address the issues... "Green netting around the pool" That would be the safety fence, clearly shown in the property's photos, required by law to protect young children and greatly appreciated by, the literally hundreds of families of those who have stayed at the property. "There is just one bathroom". Indeed there is, precisely as advertised. The bathroom is downstairs: if it's location was key, then it was something easily clarified in the pre-booking period. However, as it was an issue, we immediately provided an additional bed on the ground floor. "No covered area": again without wishing to be churlish, none was advertised, no clarification was sought and ample sun umbrellas are actually provided. "One wine glass provided": there are some fifty or so spare glasses at the property in the caretakers' store. The caretakers were in and out the property all week and would have happily provided as many as requested, if they had been requested. Overall, whilst respecting the review of every guest, I have to question the objectivity in this case. There is, for instance, no mention of the free, unadvertised little extras we provide, such as the welcome pack. We would never wish guests to have anything other than a brilliant time and try to improve the facilities year on year and feedback is always appreciated - good or bad - especially when it is constructive.

Perfect second break
We recently returned from our second perfect break at L'Ecurie. Once more the house lived up to our expectations; relaxing on the beautiful terrace and swimming in the clean outdoor pool. The cottage is set up for comfort and this reflected in the smart, modern bathroom, exposed beams and snug living room. The village is a delight and the location makes it a fantastic area for exploring cognac and a wealth of little towns. We can't wait to go back!

Beautiful oasis of nature, nurture and relaxation: Lovely private, holiday destination
We have been to quite a few gites in this part of Cognac, but I'Ecurie is one that we will most certainly return to. The garden and pool area is extremely private and has the advantage of the kitchen/diner to the patio direct into the garden, totally ideal if you have young to pre teens as you can keep an eye on them while they are in the beautifully clean pool (looked after by the fastidious Steve, who was exceptional at keeping the water safe and user friendly) The pool is protected well by a barrier, I very much liked this, perhaps not as important to us now, but would have loved this extra precaution when our children were much younger. The gite itself was great, excellent communication on any requests, good powerful shower, cool, comfortable rooms during the night and slept like a log every night, so did our children. Exellent gas hob facilities for cooking, nice touch was the lovely wild flowers from the garden on arrival, along with a welcome pack of wine, bread, milk, butter and nibbles. I was so impressed by the beautiful herb garden, which had a huge sage, oregano, bay and rosemary plantation, we took every advantage of this and had the most amazing pork, pasta, lamb and duck using these wonderful herbs. Sarah the gite's carer was a wonderful help and gave us lots of herbs from her own garden too. Lovely mature trees and shrubs surround the property, with climbing ivy. The gite's grounds has an abundance of gorgeous lavender and as night fell the aroma was amazing! The front of the gite has a lovely wrought iron summer seat where we watched the bats ( birds that my husband recognised and I would have no idea of ) and the stars while enjoying a glass of wine, divine! We already love the French and their way of life, their appreciation and importance of agriculture and sense of looking after their surroundings, it is to be embraced. The locals always greet you and smile, a resilient culture. This is the place to come where you can forget work, the rushed cup of tea and cornflakes as well as the the rush hour traffic... We really had a fantastic time, back home to the rain and wind, wish I was still there, highly recommended. Many thanks tres bien!!

Lovely property in a fantastic location
Fantastic break in a beautiful location. The Gite was everything we hoped for. We spent hours relaxing by the super pool and enjoyed the Al fresco dining. We were impressed by the amount of places to visit nearby. We will definitely be returning.

Fabulous property in a beautiful part of unspoilt France
L'Ecurie is a very well equipped, typically 'French' style gite situated in a small village of Migron in the heart of beautiful countryside. The gite has everything you need for a self catering stay, even including a television with English channels so you can relax in the evening after spending the day exploring the lovely villages and towns surrounding Migron. In the mornings you wake up to the sound of church bells and cockrels, a very relaxing start to the day. Or you can just laze around the large, clean open air pool in the garden! Migron itself has a couple of small shops for fresh produce and the people are very welcoming. Local towns well worth visiting are Cognac (the Hennesey tour was very interesting), Saintes (with its very well preserved amphitheatre) and for a fabulous beach head to Royan. La Rochelle is a bit further but well worth a visit, with a large harbour, boutique type shops and plenty of cafes/restaurants along the harbour front. There are also lots of smaller villages you pass through and these are great to stop off and walk around, with hardly another person in sight! We flew to Bordeaux and hired a car from the airport. We did a lot of travelling around and only had to fill the car once during our stay (it was only a small car but more than adequate as the roads are flat and exceptionally good). Booking the gite was very easy and you receive a pack with all the information you need. I would thoroughly recommend this property, we had a wonderful time and will definitely be going back!

Charming stay
Wonderful welcome in the form of an arrival kit with a treasure of information on the region and basic necessities provided by Julie the caretaker, which is very valuable in France where shops are closed on Sundays. The accommodations were pristine, and when the fridge gave up on us it was replaced briskly. The large and always clean pool was a delight. And thanks to its central location in a quiet village, we could easily and happily meet with locals. Would certainly rent it again.

Second holiday here every bit as good as the first was!
Just returned from our second lovely, relaxed holiday at L'Ecurie. The whole process from first enquiry to leaving the property at the end of the holiday was effortless. The gite was clean on arrival, with a few essentials waiting in the fridge. Julie, who looks after the property brilliantly (she even removed a wasp's nest for us during our first stay a few years ago), is an expert on local amenities and points of interest. Migron itself is rural, but the large garden and clean, safely enclosed pool provided more than enough entertainment for our children, and there are beaches and other amenities within driving distance. The pool is definitely a family favourite, and our only down point was having to leave!

About the neighbourhood
The small village of Migron, with its pretty, 11th Century stone church, is perfect for those who want beautiful countryside, but don't want to be too remote, with a boulangerie, a butcher, a well-stocked mini-market compete with a tiny coffee shop, post office and a weekly visit from a fresh fish van. Oysters and mussels are sold in front of the epicerie every Saturday morning. A pizza van with a wood-burning oven visits every Monday evening A new supermarket, with 24/7 fuel station, just five minutes drive away in Burie. The same village has the nearest bar to the house. Excellent markets can be found nearby in Saintes, Cognac, St Jean d'Angely, Matha, Burie, among others. Brocantes (or flea markets) are held in local villages on most weekends, and artisans fairs; such as the annual Foire aux Vins in Migron held in June, are frequent throughout the summer. Cognac and Pineau des Charente a local aperitif , are available to taste and buy direct from local producers, and local specialities include goats cheeses, oysters from the Marennes, mussels, and other wonderful seafood from the Atlantic coast. The best local wine is Bordeaux though most grapes grown here are for Cognac or Pineau and there are caves (wine co-operatives) in several local towns. Head towards the coast and you encounter beautiful sea marshes, packed with wildlife and a bird watcher's paradise. And then there are the islands.. Ile de Re, feeling more like Greece than France and Ile d'Oleron a ride across an amazing bridge and miles of undeveloped beaches backing onto pine forests. Also within an hour's drive are Rochefort and La Rochelle with its historic port, world class aquarium and fantastic shopping. Bordeaux is one of Europe's iconiccities and just over an hour away. Migron and the surrounding area is excellent for cycling, miles and miles of level countryside with virtually traffic-ree routes through vineyards, fields, woodland and villages. Other activities include river trips, antiques markets (large brocantes held in surrounding villages regularly throughout the summer), visits to chateaux, churches and museums, walking, cycling and birdwatching (74 hectares of lagoon nature reserves in the area). Sport and leisure in the area include golf (18-hole courses in both Cognac and Saintes which are 20 minutes away), horseriding, all types of fishing, tennis (including a court in the village), canoe & kayaking (boats to hire at various places along the Charente in Cognac and Saintes), and plenty of space in and around the village to kick a football.

How to get there
Travelling By Air Ryanair operate regular budget flights to La Rochelle, the nearest airport and about 60 minutes from the house and reached via good roads. There are also budget and scheduled airline services into Poitiers, Nantes and Bordeaux; the latter is also about an hour away because of the fast motorway connection. Ryanair have also offered service Rochefort, which is even closer, but these do not always appear in the schedules… Car hire is available at all the above airports. We will provide directions from the airport to the house. Travelling By Ferry The ferry options are multiple. Probably the most relaxing approach is to use the Brittany Ferries services, which include traditional day and overnight sailings plus a high-speed ferry link. These depart from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth. By choice, we use the overnight service into St Malo, the nearest of the Brittany ports: an evening departure gives you supper on the boat, a breakfast in St Malo and lunch in the Charente. The route from all of the Brittany ports takes you to a truly memorable crossing of the Loire! By this stage its all dual carriageway and motorway and again we’ll supply full directions. If you wish to make the journey more interesting still, we’d recommend coming off the motorway at Fontenay Le Comte and taking in the wet and dry Poitou marshes, known as Green Venice. It won’t add more than an hour to the journey.
