Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Great value for money
We had a fab time at Cragg Barn Cottage. It was booked as a base for 2 adults and 2 children and didn’t disappoint. Easy enough access to Keswick, basic facilities covered and comfortable and clean beds.

Disappointed!
On arrival we found that the heating was not working. On closer inspection, we could not see why this wasn't working so tried to find a manual for the very old Economy7 system but there were no instructions. Called the owner (who lives 2 hours away) who suggested we check the fuse box, but nothing was tripped.
Tried to plug in the electric heaters provided, one had a plug with a pin stuck in the socket and hanging out of the wall-very unsafe! The other one didn't work!
Long story short, the owner said there was nothing she could do and gave us our money back, leaving us 4hours away from home with 2 children and nowhere to stay at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. Not a great holiday to say the least! Hence I would not recommend this property.
Otherwise, damp, very dated and in need of rewiring (2 bedroom lamps wired together and live wires hanging out).Needs the heating system bought into the 21st century! Settee and chairs in need of replacing, stained and very worn.
Avoid, avoid, avoid!

Perfect tranquility
I parked my car and felt my shoulders relax, we work hard so this delightful cottage was just perfect to switch off. Views are amazing and the cottage had everything that we needed, even great books, games, all the mod cons too.
The lovely walk to the local was just far enough, but close enough. I would definitely return!

Lovely Cottage
Lovely cottage a bit dated but suits the cottage/location was happy with staying inside the cottage plenty enough room for me and my family, some bits need updating like the floor in the living/dining/kitchen area but not a massive issue.
The garden was lovely with a little picnic table, washing line and the views are amazing!
Unfortunately the two local farm dogs use the garden as their own personal toilet and everyday we came back they had done their business attracting numerous flys due to the dog mess, this meant opening the windows or door flys came in so trying to sleep with flys buzzing around was difficult. We understood it was on a farm and yes there would be flys but just a shame the mess was right outside our door and this was a massive factor as we couldn’t the kids play in their own garden.
Suggest maybe a fence/gate near the steps to stop the dogs using the garden as their toilet then we would definitely return to this place.

Easter weekend in the Lakes
We loved the location of the cottage. Isolated enough to be surrounded by sheep, and enjoy complete silence, but close enough to the A66 to get anywhere in few minutes.
The cottage had everything we would require.
My only negative comments would be:
One. The shower is of poor quality. It was almost impossible to enjoy a good flow of hot water.
Two. We like cooking our evening meals, and we found a lack of large pans to boil rice/pasta for four, as well as of frying pans to cook meat.

Would stay again but some things need updating
Location was in a very quiet area but you had to travel along a badly maintained track to get there and it was just a little to far from main amenities. The cottage was clean and the beds very comfortable, softer then we are used to but we slept well. The lounge furniture was uncomfortable especially the two chairs which were well used with flat cushions and grubby underneath. The frying pan was not usable due to brown stains. The pans would not be adequate to cook a meal for four people, due to their small size. the kitchen otherwise was clean, modern and apart from the pans was very well equipped. The bathroom was well equipped and the shower although small had plenty of pressure and the water was always hot. Unfortunately we could not hang clothes in the main bedroom as the small wardrobe had a Christmas tree inside. Sadly no Wi-Fi for children. A few changes as mentioned would make this a superb accommodation. Emily was very accommodating, in view of the fact that this was booked at short notice. If the few points mentioned were addressed then we would recommend this to friends but as it stands now then we would not.

Great place for base in Lakes
Really good place to stay in during out little holiday in Lakes. It was a pleasure to deal with the host Emily. She provided all the instructions how to find it and obtain keys. Very easy to follow. Barn itself was cosy and clean with all duvets provided, cutlery etc. If I could make a suggestion to the owner - please get a new pan as the one you have is well well used. Otherwise all was good:) We went for a lunch to the nearest pub the Sportstman Inn, food was quite good. I would recommend to everyone to visit Aira Force waterfall which is only 15min drive from the cottage and also drive to Pooley Bride- Ullswater lake is stunning.

Lovely Cottage in a great location
The cottage is in open country side but easily accessible from the A66. Good views and walking from the front door. 2 pubs within a mile walking distance, we went to the Sportsmans Arms which was excellent. The cottage was clean and tidy - how lovely to arrive and the beds are already made up. Lots of tourist leaflets, games and books available and a decent TV. Dishwasher was a bonus I was not expecting!
Although the heating was storage heaters, so toasty in the morning and just ok in the evening (we had snow whilst we were there in April!) there was an extra heater in the main room that made it really comfortable.
Downsides? Take a loo roll as it seemed from the visitors book that they are not always provided! Beds were a bit soft and wallowy so don't go if your back is bad. Only 4 mugs so I seemed to have to wash them every time I wanted a drink!

Great retreat
My family and I stayed here for 4 nights and it was great. It was cosy, warm and the location was ideal. It has all the mod cons but bring a DVD player if you plan to watch films in the evening.
It is close to ulswater, Penrith and Keswick. There is a lovely pub that serves nice food nearby. We all had a great stay here, we were sad to leave and would come back.
We had a problem with the access road being closed but we called the owner who guided is in, great service

How to get there
By car, leave the M6 motorway at junction 40. Take the A66 towards Keswick.
After some time, the dual carriageway becomes a single road. At this stage look out ahead and on the left for "The Sportsman" pub; a large white building.
As you come past The Sportsman, turn right off A66 and immediately take a left. Greenah Cragg is signposted on the right through a gateway and onto a private road leading to the farm.
Pull around to the left after the farmhouse and parking spaces are on the right hand side.
