We booked a weeks stay at Portman House for a family get together (3 generations), partly because it was well located for reacquainting ourselves with the lovely Somerset.
We did have slight reservations as the website photo’s made the place look a bit grey and old, plus one review was from a Hen party, however those were immediately erased as soon as we arrived and our grown up children and their children were over the moon with the size and quality of the house, it’s furnishings, fittings and facilities, plus the surrounding peaceful rural landscape.
Shepton Mallet is well served by Supermarkets and very decent take-aways , and the house kitchen and dining rooms made it a pleasure to eat-in. The Main lounge made it perfect for evening relaxation, conversation and fun with a variety of board & quiz games.
The games room just across from the house had been fully refurbished from the ‘photo’s when we’d seen when we originally booked, so was well used by the more active or competitive in the family.
The cellar is a real asset, housing a sauna, cinema screen, and karaoke machine for the brave (and the tone-deaf!)
We enjoyed some great days out, Wells, Glastonbury, Bath, Weston-Super-Mare, and even ventured to the Jurassic Dorset coast (Lyme Regis) on the advice of Paul (@Woodland retreats) who also gave us the history attached to Portman house.
Thanks also to Paula, who dealt with the booking and took the care to ensure that we had an altogether memorable week, enjoyed by all ten of us, so wouldn’t hesitate recommending it highly.
