Whether you want to curl up and enjoy the ambience of our sympathetically restored Grade II listed building, or step out and use the Church as a base to enjoy the craggy hills and valleys of the North Pennines or the North Lakes, Old St. John's Church is the perfect hideaway.

Having been bought by Phil & Joanne in 2010, the Church has undergone complete restoration and conversion from Church to home, and has been featured on Channel 4's - Restoration Man.

The workmanship and quality of the restoration was fabulous, we stayed on a business trip and would love to visit for pleasure. The owner was fabulous with more than enough information to leave you at ease in the lovely property, it was Autumn and quite cold when we stayed but the place was wonderfully warm, fabulous heating and a wonderful...

The Church is amazing, and Massive!!. Its in a beautiful village with lovely walks, we even had a visit from "daisy" the cow from the farm next door who had escaped. (Quickly rescued by the farmer, which the children weren't happy about, but bringing "Daisy" home wasn't an option) Its close enough to amazing days out including Killhope Lead Mine...

About the neighbourhood
Penrith is the main town of the North Lakes. It is on the boundary of the Lake District National Park, with Ullswater and Haweswater just a throw away with remainder of the Lakes not too far either. Near to Gamblesby is Long Meg and her daughters (stone circle), Little Salkeld water mill, South Tyndale Railway, Coombes Wood, Kirk Neuk studio and the Village Bakery. Hadrian's walls is also close by.

By Car - leave the M6 at junction 40, take the A66 east (Appleby/Brough), at the next roundabout take the A686 following signs for Alston. Travel approx. 9 miles to Melmerby, as you leave the village there is a sharp right hand bend, take a left turn on this bend (signed Gamblesby). Travel ~1 mile, as you enter the village you will see Old St. John's Church on the left.
