Famous for its castle where King John died, its perpendicular church, its market place and Georgian Town Hall and its Civil War Centre & Trail, Newark also has an Air Museum out near the showground. A variety of fairs & events are held in the showground throughout the year.. Newark has good road & rail links to historic Lincoln, Southwell and Nottingham and to The Peak District with its stately homes, including Chatsworth the home of the Dukes of Devonshire. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Everything we needed for family visit with dogs
Location was perfect for us as family live nearby. Easy walking distance to town centre and the fabulous park over the road for the dogs, which serves fresh coffee and snacks too. Accommodation had everything we needed and the dogs were happy. Will def use again when visiting.

Excellent property in Newark
We stayed over pantomime season in this lovely cottage and were blown away. Much better than any of the pictures shown, clean, dog friendly, cosy and very warm! Plus Chris who was just next door if we needed was friendly, helpful and extremely accommodating. Right next to the park and a 10 minute walk away from the theatre. Would stay here again without hesitation!

A comfortable cottage in a convenient location.
We arrived in Newark on a cold and wet November afternoon and were delighted to find the cottage to be to both warm and welcoming. We also received a very friendly and helpful welcome from a lovely lady who was the local key holder. The cottage was well appointed throughout and the whole house ,was clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well fitted ,and we were able to self -cater with ease. We particularly liked the use of the rear conservatorywhich even on a winters evening was well heated. The cottage also had a great wi-fi connection. The added benefit of being able to take our dogs to stay was a real bonus. The large park opposite was a great place to walk, and our dogs got plenty of exercise there. We had a great stay in Newark, and were able to explore the area with ease from our base at Trent Cottage, and we certainly hope to return.

Thank you for sending such a positive review. We are so happy you were comfortable in the cottage and were able, together with your dogs, to take advantage of the marvellous Sconce & Devon Park which the Council maintains in such a good condition. It was also nice to hear your appreciation of the help & welcome you received from the local representative who is indeed a gem. It is hoped that her presence gives a sense of security to our guests as she is always ready to help out when required. We hope you will be able to return one day & will look forward to giving you a warm welcome.

Great cosy & comfortable property, perfect for a short break near Newark
Good communication before we arrived, property was all ready for us with the heating on. Parking was available on the shared spaces in front of the house. Nearby Coop (5 mins walk) for milk and anything we had forgotten. Lots of cooking utensils and pots/pans and also useful information about the local area in the property guide folder provided. (nice chip shop too on Victoria street - very generous portions of chips!!! We could have ordered two and fed a family of four :) ) Had a lovely family time with our daughter who is at Uni nearby. Lots to do in local area, Newark town centre is just 10-15mins walk away, Cinema and shops....and Sherwood Forest is only 30mins drive for Go Ape or cycle rides. Much more cosy than a hotel room. Easy access to the A46. Perfect for us.

All the comforts of home.
Stayed in Trent Cottage for two nights whilst visiting my daughter and granddaughters in Newark. Found the cottage very comfortably and clean. Granddaughters loved it. Shame it rained most of the time and couldn't make use if the garden but did manage to get to the park which was very handy. Will definitely be back.

My wife, teenage son & I enjoyed our visit to my home town. Trent Cottage is very good value for money and more relaxing than cramped hotel rooms. We will be back here again.

Nice cosy place in the centre of England
We stayed one week with the dog and our daugther (22) and loved the place. It was clean, it was well organized with all things you need. We even had breakfast in the small garden. The dog had a great time running around in the park at the opposite of the house. The neighbourhood was great if you don't bother to travel some miles and also in Newark you can have some good times in restaurants and pubs (check out the Organ Grinder, around the corner heading to the center, with great beers from the Blue Monkey Brewery).

About the neighbourhood
Newark is a historic market town Newark's castle where the bad King John died after losing his treasure in the Wash, is now a ruin as a result of the Civil War. Newark was besieged three times in that war as a result of the Royalist troops digging in there in the Sconces - defensive earthworks- one of which still stands in the park opposite 92 Boundary Road. The castle is on the river and surrounded by gardens and a park. Along the river from the castle is a wharf from which Newark once transported flax and gypsum. Behind it stands an elegant eighteenth century coffee house - The Ossington. A short walk away, you will find the National Civil War in the old grammar school founded by Thomas Magnus in the 13th century and now restored to its former glory including a magnificent Tudor Hall. Venture into the centre of town via Kirkgate passing the impressive 13th century spired parish church- look for the hole made by the civil war cannon ball - and enter the Market Place flanked by impressive buildings including the Georgian Town Hall from which Gladstone spoke when he was MP for Newark. Walk past it and you will see the governor's house where Charles 1st´s general, Prince Rupert, lodged. In the far corner of the square you will find The White Hart where it is said that Charles 1st himself played skittles in the skittle alley there. Explore the Lanes and Yards that go off the market place to find boutiques for clothes, both the latest fashion & vintage, toys and antiques. Look out for old fashioned butchers and grocery shops selling local cheeses, bacon, sausages pork pie and haslet. There are plenty of pubs and coffee shops to rest in and watch the world go by.There is an open-air market of some sort everyday. Choose from Farmers, Antiques or just Market. Too cold, then wander into the Butter Market or down The Arcade to visit the boutiques and have a coffee or sample a Spanish tapa at Strays in Middlegate. When it is warmer take a stroll down leafy London Road and see Beaumond Cross and sit in Beaumond Gardens and watch the activity on the bowling green. Across the road you can get a game of tennis on the courts behind the old Lilley and Stone High School buildings. In Newark look out or pine furniture ancient and modern. Newark is an important centre of the antique trade and apart from permanent Antique Centres there are regular Antiques Fairs. It also hosts one of the largest camping and caravan centres in the country and its agricultural show in May draws large crowds. The show ground is used for a number of other types of fairs and exhibitions throughout the year. Newark boasts a number of real ale pubs and has its own real ale brewery. Most pubs offer live music on various nights. There are also musical events, plays and pantomimes at the Palace Theatre. The tourist office at Keeper's Cottage can provide information about events in the town.
Getting around
If you don't want to use your car or a taxi, the Number 3 bus to the bus station/town centre stops round the corner in Albert Street and goes approx. every 30 minutes. From the bus station you can get to the railway stations as well as to Nottingham, Mansfield and Southwell and a host of local villages. Get help from the information office. The bus to Nottingham stops by the park, 3 minutes walk from the house. Trains from Northgate Station run from London to Edinburgh & those from the Midland Station from Lincoln to Derby. If you are coming up from London by train you can spend half a day at Peterborough to see the Cathedral, Stamford to see its marvellous stone houses or Grantham to see Margaret Thatcher's father's grocery shop.
