About the neighbourhood
Macaw Bank was once an Ancient Maya Village which is where the unexcavated Mayan Temple of Tipu can be found. Throughout the years, Mestizo families occupied the area where they planted their crops and raised cattle. As the children became adults, they moved to towns like San Ignacio and Santa Elena where employment was found. Since the land wasnt being worked, nature took over and the lush jungle was restored. It is called Macaw Bank because of the abundance of Scarlet Macaw that was once found here. Macaw Bank is only 8 miles from the town of San Ignacio, just close enough to other sites and far enough to be in nature and enjoy its peace.However, 4x4 vehicles are highly recommended top travel on this road.
