Nicknamed 'El Castillo' or 'The Castle', this graceful lake-front property is situated in a quiet cove with unequaled views of the lake, mountains, villages, and fabulous cloud formations. The house has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, with a large, open living, dining and kitchen area on the ground level. Also on the ground level is a terrace with hammock, lounge chairs and jacuzzi. Level two has the Master Bedroom / en-suite bathroom and a separate bedroom with two double beds, also en-suite both. The top floor is the third bedroom. All levels have terraces with fabulous day & night views. This home and San Marcos offer some of the best swimming, diving, fishing, boating, hiking, biking and trail activities or more relaxing activities like yoga, meditation, healing spas, or your best massage ever. The site include a terrace meditation garden overlooking the lake. The home is private without being isolated. There are breathtaking views from every room, including from the jacuzzi. Our caretaker/guardian, Nicolas, is always discreetly present to assist - to take you by boat to San Marcos, or in our private launch to one or more of the indigenous villages that ring the lake, and to prepare the fireplace, even run into San Marcos to buy something (It is customary to tip for such services). His wife, Rosa, can also cook traditional Guatemalan dishes at an extra fee, just ask them. Canoe for 3-4 people is available. Fishing and crabbing with Nicolas can be arranged. There is cliff diving and sunbathing from the 'Trampoline' located 5 minutes walk east along the shoreline. Check out the TzanK'ujil Nature Trail and hike to the top of the mountain to the sacred Mayan ceremonial area. There is a wonderful intimate restaurant less than 100 yards from the property and in San Marcos there are grocery stores, coffee cafes, restaurants, massage spas, natural health centers and in most other villages around the lake there are opportunities for shopping, dining, tours, cultural experiences, and socializing. The village of San Marcos La Laguna is famous for its holistic and meditation centers, but even more so for its relaxed, chilled-back atmosphere. It has a lovely shaded central park and a band shell for locally produced music and plays. Nicolas the property custodian will arrange for your boat transportation needs at the lake. The entire lake and the villages around San Marcos are also accessible via public taxis boats (lanchas) that run throughout the day every 20 minutes from 6am to 5pm. Launches do not operate after dark. A road north from the village leads to Quetzaltenango (Xela) and the many historic archaeological sites of that region. Xela is a university city and a gateway to Mexico. Unlike the town of Panajachel (Pana) which is a crowded tourist center loaded with restaurants, night life and other urban attractions, San Marcos itself is a lovely, quiet family friendly town. You can do banking in Pana or more close in San Pedro or San Juan. On our end of the lake the villages of San Pedro and San Juan are pleasant towns filled with interesting visitor attractions, casual sight-seeing walks and good restaurants and cooperatives of artisans. Public art is a attraction as well. Further away is the famous village of Santiago Atitlan, which attracts visitors from around the world for its sights, arts, weaving, woodcarving and entertainment. . Each year in the weeks leading up to Easter (Semana Santa) villages around the lake fill with street processions, art, and religious ceremonies, culminating in the major day of Good Friday. (Minimum stay at the Castle is 3 nights)More

We stayed here a month. When I arrived I was shocked to see the proximity of the caretaker and his family. The information says " The caretaker, his wife and young child live onsite and they are very discrete" This is totally false. Their house...More

The spectacular views of the lake and surroundings nearly compensate for the accessibility issues, lack of cleaning, proximity of the caretaker and lack of privacy. The Villa is definitely needing some strong TLC to make it an appealing home. So many areas for improvement: eg...More

We're glad you enjoyed the lake and surrounding views; It is said that Lake Atitlan is the most beautiful lake in the world! Unfortunately the lake level can fluctuate significantly, and the current dramatic drop in level has made it a challenge to keep the...More

About the neighbourhood
San Marcos La Laguna Chateau / country house description: Our home is located in one of the most beautiful and tranquil bays on Lake Atitlan that is well protected from the wind storms that sometimes affect other parts of the lake. We are adjacent to the village of San Marcos, which is just a ten minute walk from the house and an even shorter boat ride. The lake is picturesque and it is fun to visit the lake villages of San Pablo, San Juan and San Pedro which are near by and can be reached either by boat launch or by road in a tuc-tuc. San Marcos is filled with much to see and do. These include fine restaurants, nice cafes and bars, saunas, boating and lake activities, grocery and pharmacy stores, open market days, and other tourist accommodations. The Maya community of San Marco...
Getting around
Easiest is by public boat/lancha. This is very easy to do. Or to walk if just in San Marcos. Lake Atitlan is at 5,500 feet/1,500m, so please be aware of this. It is a mountainous region so moving around will always involve a certain amount of up and down hill, or up and down stairs as well as in and out of boats. Those with disabilities of any kind, we advice you to ask us first.
