Enjoy a gorgeous view of the lake with a back drop of three stunning volcanoes on legendary Lake Atitlan. Our home is unique. Our long-term goal in building this property was to be self-sufficient (we are still working towards that goal). That's why we chose to build in the 'land of eternal spring.' Lake Atitlan has amazing weather - it always feels like spring here. We have two growing seasons, which means there is always something blooming and ready to eat on our property. We have banana trees, papaya trees, berry bushes, coffee bushes, and lots of local fruits like jocotes and whiskil. Also, herbs like rosemary, basil and chipilin (the leaves are tasty and can be used like spinach). Michael Reynolds of Earthship fame is the architect of this sustainable ecosystem in Mayan paradise. Go to the Yoga Forest (a 5-10 minute walk) for yoga and meditation classes or a Sunday morning ecstatic dance party, or drink locally grown coffee in our new outdoor kitchen roasted by our other neighbour.
We have an Earthship home (2 Earthship U's that are divided by a wall for maximum privacy) available for short or long term rental. The home is at the top of a hill overlooking gorgeous Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. There are many towns on the lake, but San Marcos is a yoga and spiritual retreat mecca. There are several yoga schools and meditation schools here, lots of holistic healers and massage therapists and herb classes here. San Marcos is an indigenous Maya village with many ex-pats from all over the world.
Our property is a permaculture (sustainable agriculture) farm with aquaponics, chickens, and tons of coffee and fruit trees. We are getting the systems going, so the abundance is just beginning. There is a gas camping stove but there is not a full kitchen yet. There is a hot shower, internet, and electricity now, but the outdoor kitchen is still being finished (it is a common area with other cabin). The cabin has a gas stove, and fridge for your cooking needs in the meantime. Since the temperature is pretty moderate all year round, there's not a need for air conditioning or heat, but we just finished the rocket stove bathtub which also heats the commons. Some nights can be a little bit chilly but an extra blanket is enough for comfort.
Also, it's important to know that you will have to walk for about 5-10 minutes off the main road to get up to our place. The road doesn't go all the way up. You can take tuk-tuk (taxi) to the end of the road. (You will need flashlights/head lamp for the walk at night!) To get to other towns on the lake, you take a public water taxi.
San Marcos is small village, but there are some great restaurants as we get a fair number of tourists that come through.
This is an excellent rental for adventurous backpacker types! This is kind of like camping with a great shelter, at this point. Please contact us with any questions!
There are two Cabins you will have full access to the two story cabin first built by the Earthship Team.
We have 4 four staff to help you get comfy.
San Marcos is a spiritual community in the Mayan highlands of Lake Atitlan. There is a nature reserve for picnics, and there are an abundance of classes and workshops here, from soap-making to yoga retreats. There is even a chocolate shaman who teaches how to get in touch with the 'spirit of the cacao plant' if you're interested in a different kind of meditation.
There are not many cars around here, but there are 3 wheeled Tuk Tuks that will take you anywhere you do not want to walk. A 10 minute boat ride from here is San Pedro where you can ride horses and book other adventures like parasailing.
It is rugged and you should be in decent shape.
You will get 1 of 2 cabins, and have access to bath, shower, toilet, etc. Pretty much the land accessible but steep so bring good shoes!
San Marcos is a spiritual community in the Mayan highlands of Lake Atitlan. It is important to respect local culture by wearing modest dress and refraining from public lewdness or use of illegal substances.
Other Things to Note
It is rugged and a steep climb. You should be in decent shape and not have health conditions which would make it dangerous to hike at 5500 feet above sea level.

The first time I went to San Marcos La Laguna and I stayed at magnificent earthship .The Mayan woodwork, the tires and how cool it is inside really is fascinating. I also remember that once I got up there and took a look at the...More
All the locals agree that the tire house beholds the best views of the lake. We went for the eclipse and full moon parties and it was life changing. These villages and lake have a vortex of energy surrounding them and their historic lore. Four...More
When we arrived at Earthship, after an aerobic climb up the mountain, we were initially impressed with both the architecture and the unsurpassed views of the lake and volcanoes. This impression soon turned to dismay on closer examination. Even though we had booked two weeks...More
