Cottage
The holiday cottage is a former croft house set amid working croft land with outstanding sea views across the Minch (sea) to the Isle of Skye and the Outer Isles. Located 8 miles north of Gairloch on the road to Melvaig and the Rua Reidh Lighthouse. The cottage is located in the quiet community of Melvaig. The Wester Ross area, which is in the Scottish Highlands, is a designated area of natural beauty. This is a spectacular mountain area with a dramatic coastline. There are many small sandy beaches and fantastic places to walk and mountaineer. The Torridon mountains lie to the south and Ullapool and the mountains of the far north are about 1.5 hours drive away. Gairloch is a great place to be based to explore the North West Scottish Highlands from Skye to the far north. A car is essential...The holiday cottage is a former croft house set amid working croft land with outstanding sea views across the Minch (sea) to the Isle of Skye and the Outer Isles. The Wester Ross area, which is in the Scottish Highlands, is a designated area of natural beauty. This is a spectacular mountain area with a dramatic coastline. The Torridon mountains lie to the south and Ullapool and the mountains of the far north are about 1.5 hours drive away. Gairloch is a great place to be based to explore the North West Scottish Highlands from Skye to the far north. A car is essential; the traffic however is negligible. For hillwalkers the cottage is close to a number of Munros, Corbetts and lesser hills, including The Fannichs, An Teallach, Slioch, The Fisherfield Mountains and, as noted above, the Torridon Mountains. Walking in the area is superb and there are walks for all abilities. The location is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits on the water, cycling, walking, sightseeing, bird and whale watching or for those who just want to get away from it all. Wildlife is in abundance particularly bird and sea life. The area was featured on the bbc one Show in 2013 for whale and dolphin spotting at as well as coverage of Loch Ewe, the Russian Arctic Convoys which sailed form Loch Ewe. Some of the scenes in the 2014 bbc film 'What we did on our Holidays' was filmed at Redpoint Beach near Gairloch. The beach at Melvaig is only five minutes walk. It has a small slipway for launching boats. It is ideal location for Sea Kayaking. Both seals and otters have been seen on the shore at Melvaig in recent years. Further along the coast is a sandy beach a Peterburn. On a summers day you are likely to only have to share it with a few sheep :) There is also a short climbing pitch with bolts. We have many families from the UK and abroad and get great feedback. In the two years we have let the cottage we have had no adverse comments and everyone seems to love the cottage. Having stayed in many holiday cottages over the years we have tried to equip the cottage with everything you might need to enjoy your stay. The cottage has three bedrooms comfortably sleeping 5 (up to 6 people maximum) and has a cosy sitting room and a dining kitchen. The sitting room is has a window seat and a Morso wood burning stove. The seat adds greatly to the sitting room and gives somewhere to sit and relax and watch the boats go by and look out for passing whales. The cottage is available every week from early March to until the end of November. Christmas & New Year weeks also available. Unfortunately we cannot do short lets or weekend lets - rental is from Saturday to Saturday only, with the exception of Christmas and New Year. We are pet owners ourselves however due to inconsiderate previous guests we are not willing to accept pets at the cottage.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

Nice but room for improvement
Firstly let me say that the property is well proportioned in terms of space. Living room and kitchen are a good size. The kitchen has plenty of utensils, pots and pans as well. However there were some thins that for us were not quite ok. Arriving, you have to drive up a reasonably steep incline to get to the cottage. I wouldn’t want to tackle this if there was a frost on the ground. A couple of weeks prior to our stay we were informed that due to COVID-19 that some soft furnishings had been removed. We have stayed at other cottages since all of this started and not found the same thing so maybe it is just something this owner has decided to do. On entering the property we found this meant that there were no curtains in any of the rooms and blinds put in place in the bedrooms, but nothing in the kitchen or living room. This meant that at night, when it got dark, you could not close curtains or pull down blinds in these areas which for us felt a bit strange. Not so cosy. Also while you are not directly overlooked, but from the kitchen you are partially overlooked by some caravans a little further up the hill so privacy at night when you turn the kitchen light on is not ideal. Also, when we booked the cottage we saw a lovely window seat in the living room with a padded cushion on it and imagined sitting there looking out to sea. However this cushion had been removed leaving a hard wooden surface. After sitting there for a couple of minutes we decided to go back to the sofas. On the sofas cushions had been reduced to one per sofa as well. We were also informed that there was an increased cleaning regime which we thought was great. However, when we arrived, my wife ran a bath and lets just say, it was not clean. Some hairs floated to the surface (not from someones head!!) and the sides of the bath were also dirty. We decided to clean the bathroom and kitchen surfaces for our own peace of mind. We did inform the owner who did apologise. Apparently they use a 3rd party to do the cleaning. The crazy thing was, is that there is a cleaning checklist and the bathroom had been ticked as being cleaned, but it definitely wasn’t. The heating is via storage heaters but these are not in all rooms and we found ourselves having to top up with using electric heaters at night. This may be why you have to pay for electricity separately via a deposit scheme with the first £10 being free, and you pay for the rest. Overall we had a pleasant stay but the cleanliness and sparcity of soft furnishings did not make it feel as comfortable as we saw in the pictures on the website when we originally booked earlier in the year.

PARFAIT !!

Cosy, well looked after house ,peaceful location, despite storm.
The house has everything you would need, including wood for wood burner. It has a welcoming atmosphere. Also electric fires to augment storage heaters,we found this useful as weather was quite cold a lot of the time we were here. Location is peaceful, with sea view.Perfect for a complete Escape.

Ideal Scottish holiday cottage
The cottage is immaculate and comprehensively well furnished and equipped..It enjoys a commanding position with extensive sea views. Very good value, especially for a family or 2 couples sharing. We enjoyed having the space. The visitors' book is full of rave reviews over several years. It is double glazed and has radiators A long shingle beach is 5 minutes walk away and 3 sandy shores further on, north and south. We had no trouble with midges, due to a steady breeze. Visitors can mix and match 'away from it all' experiences or easily get to the excellent Gairloch Heritage Museum, the Russian Arctic Museum and Inverewe Garden Centre. Cliff-top walks from the doorstep to the lighthouse, and all the Highland lochs and mountains a short drive away.

A beautiful haven, with stunning views and all home comforts.
We had a great week at 14 Altgrishan with our 6 and 3 year olds. The house is cosy and very well equipped. The sunsets over the sea and the views of the islands are so calming and inspiring. Wester Ross is such a beautiful part of the world. Had a great time at the Perfume Studio at Mellon Charles (a bit of time off for me) and the local golf course at Gairloch gave my husband the same opportunity.

Excellent facilities and location
We spent a week here at the end of May and, despite the changeable weather, had a fabulous time. The cottage is lovely. It is very well appointed with everything you need (plus more) for a self catering holiday. All the equipment is in great, as new, condition. The heating kept it cosy with the addition of the log burning stove as a top up. The views from the cottage are stunning both in sunshine or in cloudy weather. So nice to wake up and look out onto magnificent miles of coast and sea. The local area is also stunning and offers a lot to do especially if you are the outdoors type. I have no problem recommending this place to stay.

Spectacular Location
This is a well equipped, comfortable cottage in a spectacular location. It's great for a "get away from it all" holiday and is well placed for the Wester Ross hills and beaches. It has great views out to Skye and the Outer Hebrides. Take a walk across the road for good food at The Melvaig Inn.

A lovely home from home
This is a lovely homely cottage with absolutely stunning views across to Skye and the Outer Hebrides. We found the cottage to be clean and extremely well-equipped including a cot for our baby daughter. It's a wonderful area for walking and wildlife spotting. We had a great holiday and I'd highly recommend staying here.
