The grand houses of Abbotsford (Sir Walter Scott's home), Mellerstain, Floors, Paxton (home to part of the National Gallery) and others are easily reached, and even Edinburgh is only about an hour away, either by car or by the new Border Railway from TweedbankMore

I stayed 11 nights, and received a warm and helpful welcome, and the cottage was very comfortable and had everything I needed, and more. It was very close to the good village shop, and to the pub which had good food.

About the neighbourhood
Kelso is a riverside town of charm with many fine Georgian buildings around the market square. The former Cistercian abbey ruins lie next to the river Tweed which sweeps in grand manner around the town centre. The Duke of Roxburgh's house, Floors Castle , is just across the river and Morebattle village is 10 minutes drive south. The long distance footpath, St. Cuthbert's Way passes the door from Melsose to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne
Getting around
There is a local bus service to Kelso and to the next village of Yetholm withthe stop just nearby. Plenty of maps and information on local walks provided. The roads are very quiet and suitable for cyclists. The new rail link to Edinburgh offers a very frequent service from Tweedbank, Galashiels to the capital city. There are frequent services to the south, London, York,Birmingham from Berwick-upon-Tweed 23 miles away
