Whether hiking the Culag Woods, River Inver and Glencanisp circuit, Inverkirkaig falls or Achmelvic beach you will be blown away by the beauty of the area. SURROUNDED BY WILDLIFE With some of the most diverse bird life in the UK, this area is an excellent location for avid bird watchers. Others may be seeking a glimpse of rare species of wildlife like red deer. And keep an eye out for sightings of dolphins, seals and porpoises as you walk along the coast. ENCHANTING COMFORTS In some ways a holiday spent at Cruachan Holiday Home feels as if you have gone back to a simpler time. Keep toasty with the wood fire stove while reading a good book. Through feed out and watch the different species of birds enjoy a meal from the large viewing windows in the main living area. Take a walk out of the back gate for a fantastic view of the ocean while enjoying the sounds of the wind. Enjoy one of many hikes through the woods, along streams and rivers or walk to the Inverkirkaig shore and listen to the crashing waves. ABOUT US For almost two decades our family has been enjoying living and vacationing at Cruachan, as well as, enjoying the many excellent restaurants and outdoor activities in and around Lochinver, Ullapool and Kylesku (click here for more information). In 2016 my wife’s father decided to move back home to be closer to us and in 2017 we decided to share Cruachan, the home we love so much, with others. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

We only wish we could have got there
Unfortunately, due to illness, we were unable to use the accommodation ourselves but our son and daughter were. Annoyingly he said that the accommodation was Very Good. They loved the space, the light, fire, beautiful views, nice smells??, well equipped kitchen and the fact that the place was well maintained throughout. He stated that it was “Brilliant “. ( I still have to ask him about the “nice smells”). They also were very appreciative of the red wine in the welcome in the welcome pack!

Comfortable cottage in a beautiful part of the world
Stayed in July 21 with my wife and 2 young children. Great base to travel around this stunning area. Luckily our week had pretty good weather so we were able to hop in the car and get to the beautiful beaches at Achmelvich and Clachtoll within 20/30 minutes. Plenty of other sites and walks all around the area, and brilliant for road cycling if that's your thing. The cottage itself is large and really comfortable. It has everything you need. It's about 5/10 mins down the road from Lochinver on a quiet single track road. The owner even left us a nice little welcome pack with wine, shortbread and tablet. All-in-all, we had a fantastic week. Highly recommend.

The Aerial Photo Says It All
Cruachan House is down a single track road, very narrow (described by some as a "wee mad road"), in an incredible setting of dramatic rocks and views of the sea. The entry foyer has a fainting couch and bench for your stuff, and hooks for coats, the perfect place to stage your comings and goings. The living room has a long couch and an easy chair, a wood-burning stove (wood supplied), and pleasing art on every wall. Down a few steps to a breakfast room with large picture windows looking out to rocky hillsides and water views. A larger dining room table is between the large sun porch and the kitchen. Down the hall is a guest bathroom with both tub and shower (wonderful long deep tub, and they even supplied bath oil), then three bedrooms, one with two twin beds, one with one twin bed, and one with a double bed and another bathroom. And then there's the sun porch, which adds a significant amount of space. Although we were there in late September, we found that the house gets hot with the afternoon sun, so we pulled the drapes and shades when we left on our daily expeditions to keep things a bit cooler. Walking up behind the house we had unobstructed views of the sea, and were surrounded by heather and stunning rocks. Lochinver seemed to have moved on to winter hours before the advertised date of September 30, so nothing was open except the Co-op, which was full of people buying for their caravans and perhaps for other self-catering places. Otherwise the town was empty. We hiked Billy's Trail, in the Culag Woods, and had it all to ourselves. Peaceful. Quiet harbor. Highly recommended.

Brilliant cottage
Great cottage. On road to Lochinver - easy to get to as long as follow instructions from the owner. The cottage is spacious with everything you could need. Very quiet. Driving distance from Lochinver so not for you if you want to be able to stroll into the village. Lochinver though has shops and some lovely pubs and restaurants. The owner left some treats and wine which was a nice touch. Overall would highly recommend this for a family or small group wanting a peaceful retreat.

Excellent Holiday Home
We stayed for a short break in this excellent holiday home. This is a home not your average holiday rental. The house is equipped to a very high standard and everything is so clean and tidy. There is ample space for a family to enjoy and not feel cramped. The garden and views beyond are a delight. If you are looking for a house in this area look no further.

Cruachan holiday home
Fantastic spacious holiday home. Amazingly well equipped with everything you could wish for. We had a wonderful family holiday in this Highland paradise. Lots of beautiful beaches, amazing mountain walks and truly fantastic road cycling ...hilly but very quiet roads for children aged 7,8,11. The owner, William, bent over backwards to give us the perfect family holiday. We would love to return!

Jo, Thank you for your kind comments! We are happy you and your family enjoyed your vacation. And, thank your daughter for the special artwork on the pebble/rock she left for us. That was incredibly sweet!

How to get there
Getting Here from within the Highlands By Car. Most visitors arrive by car, especially as the bus service seems to get more erratic every year. Driving time from Inverness (via Ullapool) is about 2 hours, and there are plenty of car hire options in Inverness. By Bus It is possible to travel to Assynt by bus – but the only buses to the area are from Inverness in the south (via Dingwall & Ullapool), and in the summer from Durness in the north. From Inverness there are 2 or 3 daily bus services to Ullapool and these usually connect with a bus on to Lochinver (not on Sundays). There is also a bus from Gairloch to Braemore Junction near Ullapool 3 days a week. During the summer (May to September) there is a 6-day a week (also Sundays in July & August) bus service from Inverness to Durness (passing Ullapool & Lochinver) that leaves Inverness about 9am, passes Lochinver about noon, and returns to Inverness leaving Durness about 3pm and Lochinver at about 5pm. This service will take bicycles if you wish bring your bike and then cycle about the quiet roads of Assynt. Public transport travel information is best found at Traveline Scotland – as this will show all options available between any 2 locations on a specific day. (Please note the longstanding PostBus service between Lochinver & Lairg was discontinued in January 2012) Daily ferry services also operate between Ullapool and Stornoway (Isle of Lewis). Visit the Calmac Ferry website. By Boat If you have your own boat there is a sheltered harbour and marina at LOCHINVER. Travel to Inverness from rest of UK. Road / Car: Inverness is about 2 hours from the central belt of Scotland travelling on the main A9 via Perth. There are also direct roads from Aberdeen in the East, and from Fort William to the south west (along Loch Ness). Coach / Bus: There are a number of long-distance coach links to Inverness (including regular services from Glasgow and Edinburgh). For details of all the options visit Traveline Scotland. Rail: There are regular rail services to Inverness from the rest of the UK (including an overnight sleeper from London). The North Highland line run from Inverness to Thurso & Wick (via Lairg – but note there is NO postbus to Lochinver anymore) and West to Kyle of Lochalsh (via Garve, which is on the Inverness-Ullapool bus route). See the Scotrail website. Air: Inverness, has an international airport with direct links to the a number of UK cities (London (Gatwick & Luton), Bristol, Southampton, Birmingham, Manchester), the Outer Isles, as well as Amsterdam. Details can be found on the Inverness Airport website. Car Hire is available at the Airport & Train station in Inverness. There are other local operators which a google search will find for you.
