Offering cosy, stylish and well-equipped self-catering accommodation for families and groups of up to eight people, Tarn House mixes traditional features including Victorian tiling and inglenook fireplace with the latest amenities, from large LCD TVs, DVDs, Netflix and fibre Wi-Fi to supersized soak-baths – and a beautiful garden – to give you a home-from-home holiday at any time of year.

Tarn House forms the private wing of a Victorian gentleman's residence, built at the end of the 19th century. The cottage features two secluded patio areas, parking for up to three cars and a large private fellside garden with extensive views towards the Coniston massif and Langdale Pikes.

Fantastic house in a perfect location, we did lots of walking straight from the door with the full instructions left by the owner. Lots of nice touches like the local biscuits and full local walks and pub recommendations. It was perfect for our extended family,...More

Fantastic stay in a spacious cottage. High ceilings, comfortable seats. Nice touches with Netflix and biscuits, ideal for a lazy day when wet weather. Highly recommend, Dave the proprietor is very friendly and has a useful guide with some lovely places to visit. Really looking...More

Tarn house is in a beautiful setting. Fantastic views from the garden. Comfortable and well equipped. They have thought of everthing!

About the neighbourhood
One of the many benefits of Tarn House is its central location in the Lakes. Situated in Loughrigg, a small group of properties on the side of Loughrigg Fell, extensive walking routes set out direct from the front door, with Loughrigg itself rising up behind the property and the Langdale valleys sweeping away to the west.

- Over Loughrigg to the north – an energetic half-hour walk away – you descend into the vale of Grasmere, historic home to William Wordsworth. A short walk down the valley is picturesque Rydal Water.

- North-West – a 20-minite drive over the Kirkstone Pass (traffic and weather permitting) – is Ullswater, a popular sailing and open-water swimming destination but also the traditional starting point for exploring not only Helvellyn (via Striding Edge) and its rugged neigh...

Getting around
The Lakes are best explored on foot, bike and by car, but there are good and reliable bus services. Visitors arriving by train can get the mainline from Oxenholme (West Coast Mainline) and then the branchline to Terminus at Windermere. From there buses connect with Ambleside. The nearest bus stop to Tarn House is at Skelwith Bridge (bus stop at the A593 junction with the B5343 – a ten minute rural walk away). Service 516 - Windermere-Ambleside-Elterwater-Dungeon Ghyll (runs for spring, summer and autumn months).
