About the neighbourhood
The Village of Melmerby is in the Eden Valley, lying between the Pennines and the Lake District, 12 miles from Ullswater and 9 miles from the historic market town of Penrith. There are a number of outstanding walks along the edge of the River Eden and in the Pennines which can be reached out of the front door of Melmerby Hall and Stag Cottage. One of England’s largest Druidic stone circles – Long Meg and her Daughters – is also close by and in the ownership of the Rowley Estates.
Getting around
Stag Cottage, Melmerby is situated just off the A686 which is a beautifully scenic route from Penrith and crosses the River Eden. From Melmerby the road climbs the Hartside Pass to a height of 1904 ft, from where you will find magnificent views across the Eden Valley to the Solway Firth and Scotland. The Settle to Carlisle railway runs through Langwathby which is only 4 miles from Stag Cottage. The railway has some of the most attractive scenery and is world famous for its Victorian architecture and huge stone viaducts. Penrith train station is on the West Coast Main Line, the railway linking London to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh & Glasgow. Melmerby offers many enjoyable walks and beautiful scenery.
