Owner's description: Beach, mountains & plenty of culture This property is only a short walk (700 m) from the sandy beach. In nearby Forte dei Marmi (7 km) you are greeted by an impressive backdrop: the long, white sandy beach bordered at the back by the mighty Apuanic Alps. Michelangelo even selected his blocks of marble from among the Forte dei Marmi marble quarries. These are still in operation but Forte dei Marmi is now better known as a bathing resort - one of the most famous beaches in Tuscany, where VIPs have their summer villas and mix (more or less) incognito with the many visitors. The coast is full of many different restaurants with fish as a specialty, while in the mountains beyond, you will find many meat and mushroom dishes. Italian beach-life is usually organised through beach clubs, where you can rent a cabin, a parasol and sunbeds by the day or the week as well as have drinks and snacks at the bar of the stabilimento. This system turns out to be very convenient if you have small children. Mostly you can just show up at the club with no reservation. Those looking for empty beaches will find them only a short walk away (1400 m). Lovers of hidden rocky shores will need to drive down further south but the journey is soon covered along the Via Aurelia. One of the many benefits of this house is its location. It offers a wide range of options: a lively beach holiday near to an exclusive bathing resort, a short trip to the famous Tuscan art cities (our favorite is the very charming Lucca) and - last but not least - the romantic and peaceful mountain villages nestling among the Apuanic Alps - a Hinterland with mountains towering over 1000 m - are just some examples of the attractions in this area. What a pleasant change to the Dolce Vita at the beach! Activities With everything from beaches, medieval villages to golf courses nearby, this property is a wonderful choice whether you want to simply relax or to explore. For a day trip, choose from the cities of Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Siena. The seashore: The sandy beaches along the coast of Versilia at turn of the century Viareggio and fashionable Forte dei Marmi with their trendy bars, designer shopping and some of the best seafood restaurants in Italy.  Carrara: Visiting the marble quarries of Carrara are a fascinating excursion. After having been up the quarries, stop at Pietrasanta, a charming town between mountains and the sea where many sculptors have come to work. The Puccini festival is held every summer in July and August at Torre del Lago, the summer residence of Giacomo Puccini. Lucca: One of the most enchanting towns in Tuscany. Whether you stroll along the wide avenues cresting the top of the ancient city walls or wander through the narrow streets punctuated by its ninety nine churches, visit one of the richly endowed museums or browse among the old-fashioned little boutiques, sip a cappuccino at one of the many traditional coffee houses and sample some of the best ice cream in Tuscany, this is a sheer delight. The celebrated villas around Lucca: Some of these historic villas are open to the public and a few have internationally renowned gardens, offering an inimitable glimpse of gracious living which has endured until the present day. Florence: The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The historic centre of Florence continues to attract millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. Local craftsmanship: Hand-made terracotta pots from Impruneta, hand painted pottery from Montelupo, mouth-blown crystal glass from the neighbouring village Colle Val d'Elsa, not to mentionMore
