Beautiful house in a beautiful location
A great place to get away from city life and enjoy the beautiful scenery and laid back lifestyle of the mountains. Nearby attractions are fantastic (Mount Mitchel and the local waterfalls were highlights for my family). Van and Deb were very gracious hosts and they made us feel very welcome.

The PERFECT New Years getaway for 3 Families!
We have a great group of friends with an annual tradition of celebrating New Years in the NC Mountains. We found Birdhouse Cottage through Trip Advisor and VRBO. It really was a perfect fit for us... Three families...6 adults...5 kids. The flexible sleeping (particularly downstairs) worked well for our crew. The stunning scenery and unique architecture were an ideal backdrop for fun and fellowship. We happened to be there during a substantial snow fall. Mount Mitchell was just beautiful and a great view from the deck. The South Toe River was a short walk from the front door. The kitchen is small...but very well equipped. The chef-foodies in our group wanted for nothing! The entire house was fastidiously clean! Warm...quaint...quirky...just a great experience all around. A few observations that may prove helpful: -The house sits amid beautiful scenery, but is surrounded by other houses and a lodge that are also owned by the host. So not secluded, but also not obtrusive. -The two gas fire places add to the ambiance...and really keep the place warm! Both have access panels below the 'fire' that will allow you to regulate use. -The common space looks small in the pictures....but fit our group of 11 just fine. True...there's no way to sit a big group around a table for dinner, but we set place mats around the coffee table for the kids and the adults were perfectly comfortable at the table. -The owner 'Van' is a great guy and consummate host. It was particularly cold (as low as 6 degrees) during our stay and he checked in on us and gave great feedback on road conditions. For the price, you could not ask for a better locale. We'll be back!

Not as advertised. This is a fish bowl and not a bird house.
The photo of the front is lovely, giving the impression that you will be in a wooded area. The house is actually situated among several homes where you can see the mountains in the distance through a small portion in between the other homes that are pretty close. The major part of the house has mostly glass and so you can see your neighbors and they can see you, hence the name fish bowl. Downstairs has the smell of mold in the bedrooms and it's not subtle. A very narrow spiral stair case gets you from the bottom floor to the top. The street is right behind a small veneer of trees and the light from the street comes right into the main bedroom. The bed is horrible and concave. It's in a great location to the mountains but not a great location for a woodland experience.

Fly Away to the Smokies
Our extended family took a long weekend to celebrate our son’s birthday. The Birdhouse was a perfect place to celebrate and have some R&R. It is nestled in a small village just east of the Mount Mitchell State Park. It is a short hike from the Roaring Fork Falls which is easily accessible to all ages. We also found time to take 8 holes at the nearby course, go pond fishing for some trout for supper, and hike on the summit of Mt Mitchell. So there is lots to do from this central location. The Birdhouse is a cozy stay for a larger group. We had nine of us and it was quaint and comfortable. We enjoyed the bird-themed decor and interior design with lots of open lighting. The Wireless connection was surprisingly good given the remote location. The hosts were VERY accommodating and went over and beyond to help us out with refueling wood and propane and even recovering forgotten items. If you have a larger group and are looking for a good deal in the Smokies, we recommend this hidden gem.

Escape the heat, city, and Pandemic!
We just enjoyed a week at the cottage with our sweet dog Teddy. It was so relaxing and the 60 degree mornings were delightful. We took the short hike to the falls, very beautiful. Morning walks around the property with Teddy were enjoyable. You are close to many attractions, Mt Michelle State Park, Little Switzerland, Spruce Pine, Asheville, and Lake Lure. Take a day and view the Park Way...you will not be disappointed. Be sure and have dinner one evening at the Hawtree's Pub and Grill, it was delicious. The atmosphere was relaxing on the greens. We look forward to visiting Burnsville again in the future, and hope to stay at the Bird House Cottage again. We made some lovely memories to bring home with us and to share with friends & family.

Birdhouse
My mom booked this house last weekend and it was the worst experience i have ever had. The house was not cleaned at all. The bottom part of the house is full of mold. The kitchen sink was leaking had to take towles and place them under the sink to stop the water from leaking on the steps. Not to mention they told us that their was a lake on the other side of the road to fish and wasn't nothing their but trees. They turned they turned the internet off on us the day od check out so we couldnt use our phones to call and ask where to take the trash they didnt even give us check out instructions or nothing so with all that i wont be booking this house again. The only thing that worked was the washer and dryer.

We're so very sorry to hear of your less than optimal experience. We strive to make every stay the best possible. As anyone that owns a house will attest, things occasionally break down. However, being nearby resident-owners, we were able to address the leaking sink issue immediately. After reading this review, we made a careful inspection of the downstairs for the alleged mold mentioned. We could find no mold anywhere in the cabin. There is a dehumidifier in the laundry room that runs 24/7 to mitigate the possibility of any mold growth. There is some confusion as to our mentioning a lake on the other side of the road. Being in the rugged Blue Ridge Mountains, we are well aware there is no lake nearby for miles. This is not something we would have told you or anyone. The internet service runs 24/7 and is never turned off. We do have the occassional electricity brown-out that causes the WiFi router to disconnect. This is easily remedied with a reboot of the router. Had you contacted us, as indicated on the small sign attached to the router, we would have gladly reset the router for you. Regardless, there is full cell phone service for all service providers in our area - unless the tower was out, there is no reason why you could not have called the office. Also, being that the Birdhouse cabin is litterally a stone's throw from the office, a short walk to the office would have gotten you the required information. The check-out instructions were given to the named guest for the booking at check-in. In particular, instructions for garbage handling, which is a major issue around here since there is no garbage pickup. Finally, I saved this one for last. I am a bit confused about the cleanliness comment stating, "The house was not cleaned at all." We are vacation rental hospitality professionals - this is what we do and go to great lengths to make certain every cabin is thoroughly cleaned, prepped and disinfected prior to every new guest arriving. We set the highest standard for cleanliness, not just in appearance, but for smells, as well. Even before the pandemic, we not only clean, but also disinfect the entire cabin to eliminate germs that cause smells. It is obvious this review was written to penalize us for some dissatisfaction on your part. For your dissatisfaction, we apologize. As for the things we can attest are neither true or exagerated - shame on you.

Freaking Awesome
So my sister and I wanted to go on a camping trip for her 20th birthday with some friends so me and 8 other people booked this place to stay for 2 days and it was so amazing. Van was awesome and was a great help every step of the way (since we were all newbies to this) and provided us with great information on what to do (and how to not get our cars trashed by bears lol) The place itself was so beautiful and had pretty much everything we needed. Comfy rooms, and plenty to do just in the cottage alone. It was easily accessible and had an amazing view of the mountains. 10000/10 Would highly reccomend and would love to go back again next year in the summer when more stuff is open.

Escape and enjoy a quiet Thanksgiving
Our family of 4 enjoyed staying at the Bird House. It was well stocked, clean and cozy. The beds were comfortable. Be sure you can maneuver a spiral staircase. It was not an issue for us. Hosts were pleasant and available whenever we needed anything. The trail to the falls was right across the street and a nice pre-Thanksgiving dinner hike.
